Investigators believe the shooting was the result of a dispute.

At least eight people were shot in southeastern Florida on Monday during a massive celebration for Martin Luther King Jr. Day, authorities said.

More than 1,000 people were attending a block party with live music and a car show at Ilous Ellis Park in Fort Pierce, north of West Palm Beach, when multiple gunshots rang out at approximately 5:20 p.m. local time, just hours after an MLK Day parade had ended, according to the St. Lucie County Sheriff's Office.

"It was mass chaos," Chief Deputy Brian Hester, who took part in the parade, told reporters on Monday night. "People were running in all different directions."
One of the eight gunshot victims, all of whom were adults, was hospitalized in critical condition. Four other individuals, including a child, were injured as they ran for safety, according to Hester and a press release from the sheriff's office.

"There were people laying behind cars, laying behind anything they could lay behind," Hester recalled. "It was kind of hard to tell who was a victim and who was just hiding at that point."

St. Lucie County Sheriff deputies work at a crime scene following a shooting during a Martin Luther King Jr. Day event in Fort Pierce, Fla., Jan. 17, 2023.

Detectives believe the shooting was a result of a dispute between two parties in the park. So far, evidence suggests there were two different areas from where gunshots were fired and that there was more than one shooter, according to Hester.

"Sounds like, from our initial investigation here on scene, there was a disagreement of some sort between two parties and, unfortunately, they chose to resolve that with guns," he said. "It's really unfortunate and it's sad that during a celebration of someone who represented peace and equality that a disagreement results in a use of guns and violence."

As of Wednesday night, detectives were still interviewing witnesses and gathering evidence. No arrests had been made and no suspects had been named.

"We're following up on several leads," Hester told reporters. "We've got some tips from the community."

Anyone with information on the incident is urged to call the the St. Lucie County Sheriff's Office at 772-462-7300 or contact Treasure Coast Crime Stoppers anonymously at 1-800-273-8477.

PSL is filled up on poor cacs and literally not many jobs, just old cacs living off SS

Not the ideal place to celebrate any form of blackness, they angry and hate government.

Not to mention the influx of older educated minorities moving in and buying homes

Yeah this happened in Fort Pierce which is a predominantly black area. After years of intentional neglect man there are parts of Fort Pierce that look worse than the South Bronx in the 70’s. Avenue D, shit they still have fiends and dirty hookers still walking around in broad daylight, the police don’t even go there to patrol unless there’s a shooting or someone’s dead. I tried living in Florida but after three years took my ass back to NYC.

I know a dude just like you, from the Bronx, moved out to Florida and was loving it for awhile till he said, they nickel and dime you for everything out there,

they got him for a traffic violation, and his silly ass ignored and they took his car... at a time he was in a little financial rut, for tryin to impress

too many hoes at once, he was making good money as a chef, but got overwhelmed living above his lifestyle..

once they took his car, it created a domino effect he couldnt shake, so he came back to the bronx..

whats fucked up is, he had asthma, but in florida he said he had ZERO breathing issues his Asthma was literally cured..

He moved back to the bronx, and within a month he was back on the pump again...

Yo that’s sounds about right. I’m from the Bronx too. Yes with no state income tax they nickel dime the shit out of you in Florida. I know they quick to suspend your license over unpaid traffic violations but taking your car sounds like he was in South Florida Miami Dade does that shit. Definitely have to agree the weather living in Florida cut down on the number of upper respiratory infections I had compared to living up North. But hell no I’ll take the cold, high cost of living, seasonal Bronchitis, and the everyday grind over living and dealing with the Florida bullshit and stupidity anyday.
