Great drop here's some of my favorites.

Que sera
Cover by Sly and the family stone. Original by Doris Day

This is exactly what a cover should be. Take an original song and bring it out in a completely different angle. Sly and the family Stone brought fire and brimstone to this one

Keep me hanging on
Cover by vanilla fudge. Original by the supremes.

Vanilla fudge started with the catchy 3 minute pop song and turned it into a 6 minute psychedelic blues dirge. Once you hear their version you understand it just how dark and hopeless this song actually is.

Higher Love
Cover by kygo and Whitney Houston original by Steve winwood

The '80s were a decade of excess and corporatism. This led to a lot of overproduced and emotionless gospel tinged schlock. Kygo and Whitney put so much soul into this version you could sing it in a church, provided they had a dance floor and a kick ass sound system. Might be the best EDM cover ever

Gentle on my mind
Cover by Dean Martin. Original by Glen Campbell

This is a song about a boxcar drifter who runs away from his family and longs for his mistress. Somehow Dean Martin takes this depressing narrative and turns it into a song that's so fun, upbeat and happy you almost want to grab your own stick and do rag and run for the door.

I Will survive
Cover by Cake. Original by Gloria Gaynor

Gloria's version is an empowering song about a life-changing transformation. Cake's version sounds completely indifferent as if telling off a psycho ex is just an everyday annoyance. Somehow both are equally good.

Shook
Cover by Keisha Chante original by Shawn Desmond

When your original song gets completely outdone by a 15 year old it's time to hang up your microphone and walk off stage for good. Which is what I believe Shawn Desmond did after Keisha's version came out.

Making plans for Nigel
Cover by Nouveau Vague original by XTC

Xtc's version has a frantic robotic quality that makes it feel like Nigel is being turned from a man into a machine. Nouveau Vague's version is slow and sinister. It feels like Nigel's corpse is being dragged through the woods or his wheelchair is being pushed into an old folks home.

Fly me to the Moon
Cover by Bobby Womack original by Frank Sinatra

The original is one that Grandma dances to at your wedding. The cover is one that you play at Grandma's funeral (or a lipitor commercial).

California dreaming
Cover by Jose feliciano. Original by The Mamas & the papas

Feliciano's version was so good that Bobby Womack used it as a blueprint for his own cover. Enough said.

Ain't it fun
Cover by guns n' roses. Original by The Dead Boys

The original song is a great tribute to the downside of excess. The cover is by guns 'n fucking roses!

Seven Nation army
Cover by nostalgia 77. Original by The White stripes

Imagine all of the actors who've ever played James Bond getting together in a dive bar to fight off zombies with broken whiskey bottles.

White man's heaven is a black man's hell
Cover by public enemy original by Louis Farrakhan

Both songs are awful. But I'll still give it up to public enemy for having the balls to cover Louis farrakhan. Even if it's not particularly faithful.

Hard times
Cover by baby Huey and the babysitters. Original by Curtis Mayfield

Baby Huey's version adds a sense of claustrophobic paranoia to the song. You could almost picture Huey peeping out the corner of a cheap hotel window while a mirror full of cocaine sits next to the Thunderbird, spam, and oreos. on the bed

If You could Read My mind
Cover by stars on 54. Original by Gordon Lightfoot

They transformed a boring ass Gordon Lightfoot ballad into a sassy disco staple fit for a drag show. Absolutely fabulous.

Hurt
Cover by Johnny cash. Original by nine inch nails

Johnny exposes his demons to the world in a way that makes heroin addiction seem quaint.

Fly me to the Moon
Cover by Bobby Womack original by Frank Sinatra

The original is one that Grandma dances to at your wedding. The cover is one that you play at Grandma's funeral (or a lipitor commercial).

More like a staple at every black house party in the 70s...:ipod::ipod::ipod:

My Love" is a song by the British–American band Paul McCartney and Wings that was first released as the lead single from their 1973 album Red Rose Speedway. It was written by Paul McCartney as a love song to his wife and Wings bandmate Linda.

Margie Joseph was born in Gautier, Mississippi,[1] and sang in her church choir. In 1967, during her time attending Dillard University in New Orleans where she studied speech and drama, she recorded some demos at the Muscle Shoals Sound Studios.[2] This led to her debut on the Okeh label, "Why Does a Man Have to Lie?".[2][3]

In 1969, she signed with Volt Records, a subsidiary of Stax, and recorded the single "One More Chance" with producer Willie Tee.[2] Her next single, "Your Sweet Lovin'", produced by Freddy Briggs, became her first hit, reaching # 46 on the Billboard R&B chart. Its follow-up, a version of The Supremes' "Stop! In the Name of Love" also became a minor hit on the pop chart (# 96 pop, # 38 R&B).[4] An eight-minute version of the track, arranged by Dale Warren, preceded by an Isaac Hayes-inspired rap entitled "Woman Talk," was featured on her 1971 album, Margie Joseph Makes a New Impression and received a lot of radio air play. Her second album, Phase II, in 1972, also featured a Supremes' cover, "My World Is Empty Without You," but failed to achieve the same success.[2]

She then signed to the Atlantic label and worked on three albums with producer Arif Mardin. Her vocals on her cover of Al Green's "Let's Stay Together" garnered comparisons between her and Aretha Franklin. A string of R&B hits followed, with her version of Paul McCartney's "My Love" becoming her most successful record, reaching # 69 on the Hot 100 and # 10 on the R&B chart in 1974, though Cashbox magazine placed the song at No. 4 R&B.

again another staple at the house parties in the 70s!

Maybe that's why it has this freshly laid to rest quality to it. If I heard it for the first time without any context I would assume Bobby was desperately trying to rejoin a dearly departed loved one. Or that he was trying to get people to ask their doctor if lipitor is right for them.

Great stuff! Speaking of covers that change the meaning of the song, I'm a big fan of the French Canadian band Give that just released an amazing rendition of the bee gees 'stayin alive'. So good it prompted me to dig up this thread

Most tragic disco song ever.

I knew this song from my early childhood in the 80s it's a bert Bacharach song and they're playing the classic version In commercials now

Well prepare to be surprised! The og version was song by one of us lou Johnson also covered by Dionne Warwick later

youre whiteness shows really bad sometimes :smh:

:giggle:

You bring up an interesting point...

there are very few GOOD rap remakes

But what is considered a remake?

Using the same beat?

Or doing the EXACT song over?

Are there REALLY many of those?

The best one off top is Rapper's Delight by Def Squad

"Got To Get You In To My Life"
by Earth Wind and Fire
ORIGINAL ARTIST: The Beatles
EWF's version is a bit more soulful...gotta give it to them...
John Lennon even gave it up to EWF. They killed that song, and I loved the original. As for EWF, their version of "Can't Hide Love" also killed the original, which was also very good. And then, there's this:

While Whitney's version of For the Love of you Feels overproduced, i think her version is on par with the Isley Brothers version

I will say this about Tamia, do NOT let Tamia do a cover of your song...EVER...she straight killed Tomorrow, over the Winans' version..
