Just left the dentist's office and had a check up and they want to do a deep cleaning.

They want to charge $1,800 for the deep cleaning. My insurance will take that down to $1,300, but that still seems fuckin' ridiculous!!!

If any of you have had a deep cleaning done, what did you pay?

Damn $1800? That sounds steep!

How big are your teeth?

Sounds about right. My insurance took mine down to $1,100 and they wanted it all up front! I found out later that the deep cleaning is a hustle dental offices use to line their pockets. A dental hygienist I know told me they recommend that to everyone just like Jiffy Lube always recommends a new air/cabin filter whether you need one or not. Before I got that deep cleaning I had not been to a dentist in 20 years. When I went for the checkup they were like "uhh you really have no problems. who is your dentist?" Once I told them I hadn't seen one in two decades they started "finding" stuff. Needless to say I'm done with dentists. I've never had a cavity and I'm just going to keep doing what I've been doing for the past 20 years.

X-rays? How many trips? If they suggested a deep cleaning that means you have some issues that will require more time and effort to fix. It is worth it. I had no idea that not keeping ur grill straight can lead to strokes and heart attacks.

Dental Cleaning Cost

Getting regular dental cleanings can help protect your teeth and gums and prevent serious future dental problems.¹ Regular brushing and flossing at home are important to help keep your mouth healthy, but even if you have a good oral hygiene routine and you are diligent about taking care of your teeth, you typically won’t be able to get your teeth and gums as clean as a professional dental hygienist. Regular dental cleanings help keep your gums and teeth healthy by getting rid of plaque buildup and bacteria that can cause cavities, tooth decay, gum disease, and eventually tooth loss.

What does a dental cleaning cost with or without dental insurance?
The American Dental Association (ADA) recommends regular dental visits at intervals determined by your dentist. While many adults may visit the dentist twice a year, some people may need to go more or less often.² You don’t need to have dental insurance to get a cleaning, meaning you will pay out of pocket for the services, but many insurance plans subject to applicable restrictions and limitations, may help cover the cost of a dental cleaning and you may end up paying nothing out of pocket.

The cost of a dental cleaning without insurance can be $200 or more, depending on the type of cleaning that needs to be done.³

What does a dental deep cleaning cost?
If you have certain medical conditions like diabetes you might need to have deep cleanings of your teeth done frequently.⁴ Or, if you haven’t had a dental cleaning in a long time you might need a deep cleaning. A deep dental cleaning is referred to by dentists as “scaling and root planing”⁵. Scaling and root planing is also something that your dentist might recommend if you have gingivitis because it helps get rid of the bacteria that can typically make gingivitis worse.

Dental deep cleaning costs are typically higher than the cost of a regular cleaning. When you have a regular dental cleaning done it can be done in one visit that usually takes less than an hour. But a scaling and planing can take two or more visits. That’s because your mouth is divided into four quadrants and usually the dental technician will clean just one or two quadrants per visit. Because it’s a more in-depth cleaning each visit can take an hour or longer. Spreading out the cleaning over several appointments will likely give your gums time to heal between visits and give you a break from being in the dental chair.⁶

Because scaling and planing is a typically more invasive and time-consuming procedure than a regular cleaning it may cost more than a regular cleaning. A regular dental cleaning without insurance can cost $200 or more.⁷

But a scaling and planing depending on many factors such as the dentist performing the cleaning, your state or residence can cost approximately $200 or more per quadrant, meaning that the entire procedure could cost more than $1,000 out of pocket.⁸ Dental insurance may cover all of the costs of a scaling and planing or a portion of the cost, depending on your plan.

How much does a dental cleaning cost?
If you’re wondering how much does a dental cleaning cost, there is no simple answer. The out-of-pocket cost that you pay for a dental cleaning depends largely on whether or not you have dental insurance. Cleanings done by a dental hygienist may cost less than cleanings done by a dentist. With no insurance, your out-of-pocket cost for a regular dental cleaning will range from around $75 to around $200.⁹ If you get dental cleanings twice a year that might be a lot of money to pay out of pocket for routine dental care.

What is the average cost of a dental cleaning?
If you live in a large city or a concentrated urban area the cost for services like dental cleanings typically may be higher. You might also pay higher rates if you live in an extremely rural area due to a lack of dentists and hygienists in some very rural areas. Preferred Provider Organization (PPO) plans like those offered by Guardian Direct let people choose the dentist they want to see as long as they are in-network regardless of what the provider charges for their services, so it doesn’t matter if you want to see a dentist in your area that is more expensive out of pocket than another dentist in that area.

Go to Mexico. 240 bucks. The savings can pay for your vacation

Yeah my new dentist hit me with that recently also. Shit was crazy expensive.

Yeah the technology this new dentist had is crazy. My old dentist would use a needle to numb my mouth. New dentist - they give you a mouth wash solution that numbs your shit in seconds.

When i did do it the price was 225 each side.. i did it in one sitting.. i aint making 2 trips for this shit! But when i found out they be on bullshit with that deep cleaning i stopped doing it! Now they already told me that my teeth are in perfect condition and that deep cleaning dont have to be done often how about 2 years later they wanted to do another deep cleaning...im like nope... get out of my pocket

That's actually about right. You can have it done 1/2 at a time or 1/4 at a time. It's worth it to keep your grill intact. Shoddy teeth and gums lead to a bad heart also.

2 min. vigorous brush with medium bristle every other day before bed. On the days in between I use that device @killagram posted. Before I brush I swish with a peroxide infused rinse and after I brush I use some alcohol free rinse. My teeth literally squeak when I'm done. Do it in that order and you should be good.

I've never had a deep cleaning done and NEVER WANT ONE.I know a cousin of mines had one but he's never brushed his teeth and still doesn't and I know it's a rough procedure they clean your teeth down past the gums where tartar has caked up.
It's harsh and can be painful....good luck.

1800 doesn't sound expensive at all and out of pocket 500.....pay it and try brushing at least once a day or the next time.....they only do deep cleaning once.

A deep cleaning can mean more than one type. Either manually with a scaling instrument or with a root planing and scaling instrument which is powered. The machine method of course costs more.

Deep Cleaning is a scam

I remember going to an office and them hitting me with some ridiculous charge, I told them I'll think about it.

Following year, took my kids to a different dentist, also went for a cleaning. The dentist, I told her, I was to do a deep cleaning the year before but I declined. They laughed, said sir I'll do it, treated it as a regular cleaning. She scraped around every single tooth. Spoke with me after and and said just continue to use my Sonic brush. She said that deep cleaning thing is just to get more money but is nothing but a tartar scraping if needed.

The other first office wanted to charge per quadrant of the mouth and was something like $250 per area, with insurance.

I'd go to another office, and another until you find someone who isn't trying to gouge your pockets.

That's too much, they must be doing more than just a deep cleaning
That's just for the deep cleaning.

They wanted $4,700 for all the work they wanted to do. Crown for a cracked tooth. then all the follow up visits and other misc shit that I really don't need. I just need a cleaning and that's it!! A lot of it was them just piling on shit.

It's was like going to get an oil change and then they want to change belts and air filters and shit.

After the appt, they took me to the sales office and laid everything out. They had financing plans. It was like I was about to buy a car. It wasn't high pressure, but the prices were shocking to me and I just told them I would get back with them.

That's my thought as well. Just look around.

These people were super cool and pleasant and the office was really done up. Very nice place.

They were very thorough and took a ton of photos and X rays and had top of the line equipment. I was there for like 2 hours.

That visit was only $37, but then they hit me with the bullshit prices!!!

Very slick operation for sure.

there are dental offices here in Dallas that will do it for free if you have PPO insurance
See, that's what I was thinking. That the shit was free or at minimum cost.

I guess when I got it done before, I had different insurance.

No doubt! My aunt had a tooth infection turn into a health scare. She spent like 2 weeks in the hospital because of it.

I don't think she EVER went to the dentist though.
