Prey director Dan Trachtenberg opens up about the Predator prequel's end-title scene and what it could mean for the franchise's future.

Prey 2022 Film Header
Prey director Dan Trachtenberg recently discussed the film's unconventional post-credits scene.

Trachtenberg opened up about the Predator prequel's end credits sequence, which features a hide painting of three more Predator spacecraft landing in Comanche territory, in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter. "The nerd in me looked that far ahead, as far as he could look, before we started writing this movie," he said. "But the adult in me said, 'Don't count your chickens and just be careful. Try and make the best movie possible, straight away.'"

Prey May Have Revealed A Secret About The Original Predator's Best Tool

"End-credit sequence aside, there is something refreshing about seeing a movie that is not really intended to be just a part one to something else," Trachtenberg continued. "There's something nice about seeing a complete thought. On the complete other hand, I love that what would've been a post-credit scene in other movies, is an animated end-title sequence in our movie. Our end titles are still storytelling."

Prey Revitalizes The Predator Franchise
Prey premiered on Hulu on Aug. 5, 2022 to considerable critical acclaim. It is currently the Predator franchise's best-reviewed movie on Rotten Tomatoes, with a Certified Fresh rating and a review score of 92%. This puts it well ahead of the original 1987 film (80%), and its sequels Predators (65%), The Predator (33%), Predator 2 (32%), Alien vs. Predator (22%), and Aliens vs. Predator: Requiem (12%). Positive Prey reviews have singled out Amber Midthunder's lead performance for particular praise, along with the quality of the sci-fi/horror action movie's action scenes and diverse casting.

Prey Is A Masterpiece, But Predator Changed Movies

Prey has also been well-received by audiences, too. The direct-to-streaming blockbuster is Hulu's top streaming premiere of all time, outperforming the debut of any other film or TV on the platform in the US. Prey performed equally well overseas, too. It racked up the most hours watched during the first three days of release for any film premiere on both the Latin American Star+ service and the Star hub used by Disney+ in other international markets.

Cast members from the original Predator have also voiced their approval for Prey and its star. Bill Duke, who played Sergeant Mac Eliot, took to Twitter to describe the prequel as "amazing" and branded Midthunder "phenomenal," before welcoming the actor to the "Predator Family." Duke's tweet echoed earlier comments by his co-star Jesse Ventura, who famously portrayed minigun-toting heavy gunner Blain Cooper. Ventura called Prey "a thoughtful, creative, and wonderful film" and tipped his cap to Midthunder's turn as protagonist Naru.

Why Prey Director Dan Trachtenberg Doesn't Think His Movie Is A Predator Prequel
20th Century Studios
BY ERIN BRADY/JULY 15, 2022 5:28 PM EDT
When you first heard that the newest "Predator" movie was to be set in 1719 in the Comanche Nation, you may have assumed that it would be a direct prequel to every other entry in the franchise. However, that's not exactly the case — at least according to "Prey" director Dan Trachtenberg. When speaking to SFX Magazine (via Bloody-Disgusting), he explained why he doesn't like hearing his film be referred to as a prequel.

"In my mind, this is not a prequel movie," Trachtenberg explained. "This isn't, 'Let's tell the origin of the Predator.' This is really something that's set prior to the original Predator movie, and the Predator creature in this one, this is its first time travelling to Earth."

That mentality makes sense. "Prey" appears to be focused entirely on Naru (Amber Midthunder), who finds herself having to save her people from an otherworldly threat as she tries to become a hunter. The Predator, much like how it appeared in the 1987 original, seems to be a more obscured threat in order to focus on Naru's fight, unlike how it has been in other entries in the franchise.

So, what is new about the Predator in Prey?
20th Century Studios
Just because "Prey" will not be exploring the origins of the Yautja (or Hish-qu-Ten) doesn't mean we won't be seeing new aspects of it in the film. In fact, Trachtenberg previously told Time Out that the Predator, which he said was made "slimmer and less armored" in order for it to more closely resemble a "creature," was designed to look more threatening than ever.

"It's intelligent and it has advanced technology, and that makes it even more difficult to take on," he pointed out, "but because the movie is set 300 years in the past, those things need to feel a little bit older than we've seen before, but also still far more advanced than what we think our earthlings would be able to handle."

He elaborated on this in a separate interview with Empire Magazine (via AVP Galaxy). He described wanting to make the conflict between the Predator and Naru resemble David and Goliath, meaning he had to make some changes to ensure the alien wasn't overpowered. Plus, it was important to showcase how the Predator eventually evolves into the iconic character it is today.

"I didn't want to make [the Predator] smaller," he said. "It doesn't have its plasma caster, but it does have heat vision and other tools."

You won't have to wait much longer to see "Prey," as it will have its world premiere on July 21 at San Diego Comic-Con. Afterward, it will be available to stream on Hulu starting August 5, 2022.

Predator 5 Director Explains Importance Of Prey's Indigenous Lead Actor
BYBRANDON LOUIS
PUBLISHED JUN 07, 2022
Exclusive: Prey director Dan Trachtenberg explains the importance of the upcoming Predator movie's casting of an indigenous actor in the lead role.

Prey director Dan Trachtenberg explains the importance of the upcoming Predator movie's casting of an indigenous actor in a lead role. The horror-thriller will be a prequel to the long-running franchise that first began with the 1987 action classic Predator. The original John McTiernan film proved immensely popular with fans and spawned a franchise of five main films and two crossovers with the Alien series: Alien vs. Predator and Alien vs. Predator: Requiem. Prey originally began development in secret during the production of the franchise's previous film, The Predator (2018), which was written and directed by Iron Man 3's Shane Black.

Known for her role as Kerry Loudermilk on Legion, Sioux actor Amber Midthunder stars as Naru, a young Comanche warrior in 18th-century North America. When an alien hunter threatens her tribe, Naru must stalk and kill the Predator to protect her people. She is joined by Stormee Kipp, Michelle Thrush, Julian Black Antelope, Dakota Beavers, and Dane DiLiegro, a 6'9" former professional basketball player who will play the role of the Predator. The first full Prey movie trailer released today, showing what looks to be a tense battle between Naru and her extraterrestrial pursuer.

In an exclusive interview with Screen Rant, Trachtenberg explains the importance of having an indigenous actor in the lead role of Prey. The director expresses a desire to have a protagonist unlike anything the franchise had ever seen, as well as a character than is not typical of a Hollywood film. Read what Tractenberg says below:

I thought that if I'm going to make a movie that is this visual - a story told through action - there had to be an emotional experience to have as well. I thought if I could make this an underdog story, that could give it this sports movie engine driving it. Then, I realized, 'Wow, wouldn't it be great if the experience of watching the movie were similar to the experience the character goes through?' Who is a protagonist that we've never seen in movies before? That's when we realized we've never had a Native American or really an indigenous culture that has been at the lead of a big movie like this. The Comanche were the fiercest warriors of the time, and I think all indigenous cultures - but the Comanche even more so - have always been portrayed as the sidekick or the villain of a movie.
That's where I honed in on the Comanche and pitched the movie to Fox, and they absolutely loved it. When the time came to actually get it going, we started hunting for a producer - pun not intended! And then, lo and behold, I found Jhane [Meyers]. As soon as we started speaking, I thought 'Oh, she is Naru! She is the main character of this movie!' She had done some projects with Disney in the past, and that's how there was some connection.
Trachtenberg rightly observes that Comanche, as well as other indigenous tribes, have rarely led a major Hollywood motion picture, or even been portrayed in a positive light. Through this story, the director recognized that there was an opportunity for representation that members of the indigenous community are rarely given. His partnership with Jhane Meyers is notable, as she is a prominent member of the Comanche nation that has served as a consultant and producer on productions such as The Magnificent 7 (2016), Wind River, and the Taylor Sheridan Yellowstone prequel series 1883.

Positive Comanche representation in Hollywood is few and far between. One of the most famous films featuring Comanche is Comanche (1956), which has the tribe as both villains and sidekicks. The Lone Ranger's Tonto is one of the more well-known Comanche characters in Hollywood history, but he is relegated to serving the titular hero and his missions, rarely getting a moment to command his own narrative. Trachtenberg understands that he has a chance to create a film that allows for greater representation in the Native American community by casting an indigenous lead actor in a positive indigenous role. Audiences can see Midthunder as Naru when Prey debuts on Hulu this summer.

You were wearing a bulls shirt all through the 90s and now you wearing a warrior jersey in 2022..nobody likes a bandwagon nig..you was team predators all last decade and now you got the poms poms for prey.. stop riding the bandwagon nig.. I remember your emo predator shirt with your hero looking like a holocaust survivor.. celebrate that.. even bills didn’t put that shit in the top 3 never 4get..predators is on nobody radar

We talking box office ?

I'm talking facts
I'm talking movie quality
I'm talking satisfying victory

You see they had her cut off his arm
You see they had her kill the mf and take the gun back home right
Fact is training day alien robocop almost ended the franchise and that’s why it took over a decade to get a new movie..when Arnold did it they wanted an automatic sequel.. when color purple did it they said well how about them aliens and ms weaver

i like the twist of the villain being a cop and the good guy being an alien crime fighter from outer space.. it showed that man’s biggest threat is ourselves and not some foreign/out of space entity.. good message from training day prequel..the consumer on the other hand wanted the predator to be a bad guy like in the first 1 and they wanted the hero to be a human like the first 1

I hope they give us a proper Aliens Vs. Predator movie now the franchise has legs again. After Godzilla Vs. Kong's success Disney should take the idea more seriously.
