He's only talking about the Duke Ellington SPEECH he gave. That wasn't a special, that was a speech he gave as they wanted to honor Dave by putting his name on a building. It's not his or Netflix fault that folks watch everything the man does.
In that speech Dave said respectfully he's the best of this generation. So you know a lot of his peers are going to get in their feelings.
I don't mind Dave's style because whether Damon think it's more of speech talk it's still very thought provoking & humorous at the same time. A lot comedians couldn't be successful with that style.
Dave could easily get back to the joking style like the Kevin Harts of the world and still run laps around them.

Comedians seem to be like boxers talking shit to each other. He’s an OG and long out of the game and has seen several iterations of comedy. It’s a critique and not an incorrect one. Some comedians can’t do a new special every year. I imagine it’s really hard to come up with new and killer shit. What’s funny varies. Most of Chappelles specials aren’t funny, just clever or bold. His last two weren’t funny at all. The Juicy Smollet and the Beyond Meat lines were hilarious. The rest was preachy and recycled.
