Anyone On Here Play The Guitar/Bass?

@jack walsh13

Bruhhhhhhh, I just got one thing to tell ya...

Get a tube. That mofo sounds FUCKIN AMAZING!

I was a lil skeptical at first...I have a few tube amp models on my processor and and amp...they don't do the real deal justice.

With your axes you gonna love one.

I'll report back later...I'ma need some alone time. :roflmao2:

@jack walsh13

Here's my new joint

May have to get this. That's a great price!!!

Mannn, I researched em for about 2 whole days...I got it at Reverb...$130, used.

I was gonna get the T5 Infinium amp head, originally, and play it through my Fender keyboard amp...HUGE 15" speaker+ piezo horn, 100 watts. But, I let someone snag it before I pulled the trigger. There was one somewhere in Europe I could've gotten for $160, with shipping, but I took this instead.

But, I need something easy to carry around and this does the job...5 watts is more than loud enough and I like how you can dial it down to 1 or .1 watts....I'ma try those settings later.

I was torn between this brand and the Monoprice 5 watt amp...the Mono got rave reviews on the guit forum I'm on. Several players have them and loved em.

However, I think it's a single tube, and the soldering on the tube isn't the best, supposedly.

This is 2 tubes...one for preamp and one for power...all tube. I didn't want a combo, where you had just a tube preamp and solid state power...lots of em out there, but I wanted to go 100%.

Later I may try different tubes in it. It's a cheap and easy way to upgrade the sound quality. The original owner already upgraded the speaker....who knows...maybe I'll drop a Celestion in it.

Have you been checking out the gear from the NAMM show?

Every major dealer and vendor is there with their new stuff...I've seen a bunch of it on IG.

Today was also spring cleaning. I started cleaning all my girls up.

Over the next few weeks, I'ma clean, polish and restring all of em...one or two at a time...gotta get the dirt and gunk off the frets. I did my Grote 335 today.

Took me about an hour, but she's clean AF now with new 9s Super slinkeys on her...and I put some lemon oil on the fretboard.

I keep a 3 pk of strings, so I'ma have to buy a few packs..

I know you're gonna go big on an amp..if I had the money, I'd have gotten a Fender Deluxe or Twin Reverb...maybe something along those lines, and would never have to upgrade, but this gets me in the door and I'll get one later.

But, I see why so many players use tubes. The sound IS that much warmer. It makes jazz, blues and RnB sound smooth as shit.

It's the tone I was looking for.

I gotta look at a tube amp them. I'm definitely gonna get that Blues Jr IV. Gonna get the Katana as well

@jack walsh13

Mannnnn, I ain't even broken in my current amp and I saw this deal and it got me drooling...
Check out this item on OfferUp. https://offerup.co/YmUv0xq5Fqb

There's a term among guitar players called GAS...Guitar Acquisition Syndrome...

I got it bad :roflmao2:

A Fender tube amp listed for $225?...I'd offer $200 ...and then sell my Mustang and Frontman. They get no love now anyway

I tell ya, bruh...I play my new one clean more than I ever have any of my old amps. The tone is that good.

Tryna get into bass guitar, any recommendations or advice?

What are your goals?

Simple answer is get an instrument and practice...find someone you can learn from..I have several teachers on YouTube I follow.

Learn the fundamentals...even as basic as how to hold a pick... that way you won't have to unlearn bad habits...lol..@jack walsh13 and I can attest to that.

I spent alotta time undoing things I could've learned the right way, upfront.

Learn chords... practice changing chords...over and over...and then some more. I used to set a timer and note how many times I could change from one chord to another...when you get to 45...50 changes in a minute, switch to 2 more chords and do the same...

Learn stuff you wanna play. It'll make the long practices fun and you'll feel a sense of accomplishment...there's alotta easy one or two chord songs.

Try different types of guitars or basses and amps....then pedals for effects. Find out what feels comfortable to your hands.

You can spend as little or as much as you want. Fortunately, even some inexpensive gear is pretty good now.

Start listening for tones you like, from different players.

Go back and check out this thread...there's been alotta experienced players dropping knowledge...that's been HUGE.

I been playing for just over 2 ..2.5 years and can play hundreds of riffs or songs... pretty much any song I ever liked.

One thing I've found...it's ALOT easier learning songs you know really well.

Walsh put the tabs to Breezin up...I've heard it hundreds, if not thousands of times, in my life. I can play the opening riff...but I had to listen to the song to remember how it ACTUALLY goes..not what I remember. It's amazing how many notes you drop or add to a tune...but in your mind, you think it's right.

Good luck

Which bass do you have? And ask @DWBass and @woodchuck questions too. Those are bass kings. Also, I would look into Scott's bass lessons to learn. Best bass teaching site hands down you will ever find on the net. Scott Devine is a phenomenal and world renowned bass teacher. Also on YouTube anything Marcus Miller and Victor Wooton videos take note of what they say. Phenomenal bass players and teachers. Take a pic of your bass. What amp do you have? Do you have any bass pedals?

Thanks, I'm as green as it gets. My daughter plays the piano/keyboard and one of my sons is learning so they often jam together. I just had this idea to join them and have always liked low-end rhythm players though I never tried my hand at it. I was looking at the Ibanez GSR100EX at the Music and Arts center where my son goes but I'll take any recommendations.

Bruhhhh, I didn't wanna say it, but you DEFINITELY got it

GAS like a mofo...and not that regular..you got premium GAS :roflmao2:

I'm ALWAYS on the lookout for my next axe... thinking about an Acoustic electric now.

If I was you, I'd have my kids teach me keys also...one of the best ways of learning is also by teaching. They take their lesson and then let them teach you what they just learned.

I peeped that Ibanez and it looks sweet!

Walsh is right...@dwbass and @woodchuck are experienced bass players. They drop in from time to time and drop knowledge.

@respiration is a vet on the guitar. I try to pickup tips from him.

Walsh is a practice fiend. We started playing within a few months of each other and offer support and tips back and forth.

Hit up a guitar store and try out that bass. See how it feels. If you like it, get it.

Don't worry. If this becomes a serious hobby, it won't be your last one.

Walsh and I had similar ideas, regarding gear. We both wanted something better than beginner's quality.

I first learned on one of my son's early touring guitars, that he trashed and I rehabbed. But as soon as I was sure I was serious, I bought a bucket list guitar.... Telecaster Special Edition Custom Deluxe...it plays like a dream, and if I never got another axe, I'd be happy playing that one...it makes me sound better than I really am and feels so good, there are times I don't wanna put it down.

I tell from folks all the time, that if you like listening to music, there's no comparison in learning those same tunes. You'll enjoy playing it MUCH more.

Playing with your fam will be a bonding experience they'll never forget. It's a big reason I started playing....so I could play with my son.

Your right man. I be wilin'   But I promised myself I'm not gonna get another instrument tillI get the basement finished. Which will be soon. Want a soundproof studio down there. That saxophone is loud. Never knew how loud they are. Digital piano comes 1st. Then I'd say the Alto Sax. Then the Telecaster Ultra Luxe. Then the Tenor Sax. Then the Taylor 324ce Builder's Edition electric Acustic. That Boss Katana amp is coming by the end of the summer. I'm not even gon make an attempt to bullshit myself or you and lie and say imma wait. Blues Jr IV probably coming right after if not the same damn time. You know my motto black......if I can't take the gear and play at Madison Square I'm not laying my hands on it to learn. I work too much to justify to myself what I don't need or deserve in life.

That's a great idea man. I'm actually gonna learn the piano and Sax as well soon. But if you have someone playing those instruments already it can open up a vast majority of ideas of rhythm styles and selections. The Ibanez is nice. My suggestion when picking out an instrument...........see what your favorite artists play 1st. If you like the sound, figure out what they play. You can never go wrong starting your research that way. Then, go try out the instrument in the store to see how it feels. Just because it's some expensive premium equipment doesn't mean it's right for YOU. IF IT DOESN'T FEEL RIGHT OR ITS NOT APEALING TO YOUR EYE DON'T GET IT FOR THE SAKE OF SAYING YOU GOT SOMETHING. LOVE NEIL ROGERS BUT I COULD NEVER PLAY HIS FENDER HITMAKER GUITAR. NEIL MADE THAT FENDER SMALLER THAN A REGULAR PROFESSIONAL SERIES AND WITH MY HUGE HANDS IT WOULD NEVER WORK FOR ME. LITTLE THINGS LIKE THAT YOU GOTTA KNOW ABOUT INSTRUMENTS. RESEARCH RESEARCH RESEARCH. GOOGLE IS YOUR FRIEND. TAKE ADVANTAGE AND COMPARE AMPS AND EQUIPMENT.

@PJN

Everything he typed...

I don't know how old you are, but when I was a kid, we learned by watching the greats, and then trying to emulate what they did...then put our own flava on it.

Same thing with this...

That's why I said listen for sounds...licks/riffs/tones you like...then copy em...learn from em..modify em...rinse repeat.

My favorite guitar isn't my most expensive. My son gifted me a piece for Father's Day, a few years ago... it's wayyy more than I could afford, but he's an artist for that brand...so he gets them free.

It sounds amazing, but my Tele feels like I'm skating on ice.

I know I sound like a broken record, but bruh, when you hook ANY of your harem up to a good tube amp...OMFG...you're gonna lose it!

I have a Twin Reverb on Amplitube and some other Fender tube mod on my processor, and NEITHER can touch my lil Bugera...it's night and day difference.

I'm telling ya.. previously, I mostly played thru the processor to get some different tones...lotta fuzz, distortion. I've BARELY used anything but a clean setting, over the last few days.

I know the kinda quality you're looking for...(I sound like a salesman) and I'd go for the best tube you can get.

The Katanas are good, but a Deluxe Reverb, Super, Twin? Mannnnn...

Just dropping in. FYI, I currently own 5 basses. A Lakland 55-01 highly modified. A custom 4 string jazz bass (looks like a Fender). A stock Bacchus P Bass. A Spector Legend 4 string w/upgraded EMG pickups and preamp. A Cort 5 string jazz style bass that is about to be upgraded with Aguilar pickups and an Audere 2 band preamp. Would have been completed but I ordered the wrong preamp and had to send it back. I play through Markbass and GK amps. GK and Eden cabs. I also have a rack rig with a BBE B-Max preamp and a power amp which I use in parallel mode. That's basically my spare if my other amps go down. Got some other smaller cabs I use for rehearsals. I have a few pedals and wireless instrument systems. That's basically my rig rundown.

Now for pedals do you use pedals SPECIFICALLY marked for bass or ones that are interchangeable with bass and guitar? Thats an important factor for me sisincI play both.

Your thinking Deluxe Reverb over the Blues Jr?

U7MKuB.jpg

First of all...Good Lawd! At that chick in the shorts..

Ok..I'm back..

I haven't actually heard a Blues Jr, but on rep and the number of players who swear by them, those bigger Reverbs might be a one shot and done deal...not sure I can say that about the Jr..

You KNOW you'll never need better guitars than what you currently have...you went top shelf on all of em.

My point is at least try one of the big dogs and see how you like em... Deluxe Reverb, Twin, Super Reverb...

Here's a link to a forum where they discuss the Jr vs Deluxe...

https://www.tdpri.com/threads/love-for-blues-jr-vs-deluxe-reverb.561201/

Some of the critiques I've heard more than once...the Jr is a lil boxy sounding..better as a smaller amp... especially weight-wise. The Deluxe is a bigger and heavier amp.

It might be too big for playing at home, but if you have a sound proof music room, that may not be a concern.

I wouldn't take the opinions of the link as anything more than that..alotta really opinionated dudes on there, but alotta experience, as well.

Just saying, since you're going all in, match the amp as well.

Edit..

I'm drooling like a MOFO!

Hey bruh, Sall good.

I live vicariously through your purchases
:roflmao2:  :roflmao:

From the last couple years, I have a pretty good idea of your direction and I just think this will be a one and done purchase...not saying there aren't other amps to get...sheeeid, we got GAS...there's ALWAYS another. But this matches the quality of your axes...and it's gon make them bitches sing!

I just want a shout out on a CD you drop one day....or once they start giving you free gear, hook ya dude up.

My son just told me a boutique manufacturer...not his brand, is sending him a guitar...I checked their website and they don't have anything under a couple grand....most over 3k..

That's what you can look forward to...

In a few years, you may have a rep whose job is to make sure you have everything you need gear-wise...

You make a lot of sense about the amps. I believe this Amp will sound much better. That Mustang GTX100 will help me with getting my pedals together for the sounds I wanna play on the Reverb. Thanks for the insight.

That's the thing...the Mustang is just a stepping stone and learning platform to show you which pedals will be in your board/rig....as opposed to going out and buying a dozen separate pedals and finding out you don't need it after all.

However, there's ALWAYS new sounds to incorporate and your pedals will also change... except for some basics.

@respiration can tell you more than I can about which guitar ones are more essential and Ddub mentioned what's in his rig.

I wanna learn this

CU2zN3.jpg

Bruh, I been working on this, since you posted it....

Then i REALLY listened to the original, and noticed it's a lil different...

This is a good version of Benson's tune, but here's one I think is closer, note for note...

I take some liberties, but usually wanna learn it the way the artist played it....I think it's actually easier this way, too.

Check it out.

I was just working on this. Question, in the beginning is George doing up and down strokes on the high E and B strings or all down strokes? I find it much easier doin all down strokes to help avoid hitting the G string. Ha, I typed G string. :giggle:

Damnnm good question, cuz I been wondering myself...I think he's doing some upstrokes...maybe.

Imo, that's the hardest part...tryna get those two strings to ring out...otherwise it's too much of the B string.

You must have a HELLUVA time playing 14 and 15 B and E...I got skinny fingers and tryna squeeze them on those two frets is a bitch.

I tried muting that G string, with my middle finger, to keep it from playing...

That's the sauce, tho...if you don't get those to ring together, it sounds like crap.

Damnnm good question, cuz I been wondering myself...I think he's doing some upstrokes...maybe.

Actually it's not that hard on the Gibson. That's the thing. Some of those high end guitars make it easier to navigate the fretboard. Now with that Strat Pro II I would have had a hell of a time on that 12-14/10-12 slide with that tall skinny fretboard. Jumbo frets with my huge hands make things so much more manageable for me. But your right.......if you don't hit both strings it sounds like crap. I'm getting better at it. Sliding up and down on the Gibson is a fuckin dream Black.

Bruh, got my Squier Tele working again!

Had to do some rewiring on her, but she's back again.

Now all my girls are playable and I don't have to take her to GC to pay them do something I can do myself.

It took me awhile, but the crack is fixed and one of the pups is back...I'll fix the other later, but for now, she's good to go.
