3 Celtics who won’t be back next season after NBA Finals loss
3. The Nik Stauskas revival is probably over
Nik Stauskas making an appearance was a moment of pure joy this season. "Sauce Castillo" as he was known early in his career hadn't played in an NBA game since the 2018-19 season. But he caught on first with the Miami Heat on a 10-day contract and then with the Boston Celtics, appearing in six games for a grand total of 15 minutes. The 28-year-old wing was the No. 8 pick in the 2014 NBA Draft and began his career with the Sacramento Kings, bouncing around to four other teams before eventually going overseas.
Stauskas is under contract for next season as well, at just over $2 million but that contract is nonguaranteed and wouldn't be surprising to see the Celtics either use him as salary filler in a trade or simply waive him to clear the roster spot for someone else. It was fun while it lasted but we've probably seen Stauskas in a Celtics' uniform for the last time.
2. Sam Hauser probably won't be back with the Celtics next season
Sam Hauser was among the most-used, end-of-the-bench players for the Celtics this season. The 24-year-old, undrafted rookie, appeared in 26 games for a grand total of 52 minutes and proved himself to be a strong outside shooter. He attempted a grand total of 50 shots on the season, 44 of which came from beyond the arc and he finished have made 43.2 percent of his 3s.
Still, more than half his minutes in the regular season and all of his 15 minutes during the playoffs came in garbage time — his shooting touch wasn't enough to work his way into the rotation in any meaningful way.
The Celtics have a club option for about $1.5 million next season and it's possible they decide to keep him around for another year. But the top end of the Celtics rotation is fairly locked in and if they're going to make improvements for next season it may have to be by clearing some roster spots and using them on veteran minimum contracts for players with a bit more situational value.
1. Luke Kornet will probably be looking for a new home
You can guess at Luke Kornet's importance to the 2021-22 Boston Celtics based on the fact that we don't even have a picture of him where you can clearly see his face. The veteran frontcourt player appeared in 12 games and played 85 minutes for the Celtics during the regular season, nine games and 19 total minutes in the playoffs.
Kornet also finished last season with the Celtics and found his way back after stints with the Cavaliers and Bucks earlier in the season. While he has some skill — a 7-foot-2 big who has hit 32.4 percent of his career 3s — he's also played for five different teams in his five seasons in the NBA.
Kornet's contract expired and he's an unrestricted free agent this offseason. You never know, he might find his way back for a third stint in Boston but chances are the Celtics won't have him high on their free-agent priority list.
