Or that Dustin Johnson is married to Gretzky's daughter? They report the hell out of black athletes and I think they're trying to put a target on their backs.

Cash is an asset so that means the same thing. How much of your assets are in cash depends on how liquid you want to be. Warren buffet sits on half a billion cash just to buy distressed assets. But many billionares have a low percentage of cash because cash doesn't appreciate. It's value declines with inflation. While other assets like stocks, real estate, bonds generally appreciate. Now when you own a business or have few very big contracts (athletes and entertainers for example) and they make these news articles about whether or not they are a billionaire from a finance perspective it's usually pretty fugazi. They usually base the current value of the contract, or business based on the future expected return from those businesses or contract.
I doubt Lebron has a billion dollars worth of hard assets sitting around much of this billion is based on what someone would pay for the stake he has in the busineeses he owns, which is based on the perceived future return from those businsess. As well as his anticipated future NBA earnings.
We saw real quick with Kanye if it's based on the future value of current assets (ie his adidas deal) that billion can go away quickly. So when they do these valuations of individuals like they are companies it really doesn't tell you much about the persons real financial situation.
That being said Lebron deserves all the props in the world. Not for accumulating money but for the way he took his potential and maximized it. I was blessed in my lifetime to see this dude rock out for 20 years with zero issues. That's greatness that can't be denied.
