Over 700,000 Air Fryers Recalled After Child, Others Hurt by Fire, Melting
BY NATALIE COLAROSSI ON 4/23/22 AT 4:23 PM EDT

More than 700,000 air fryers in the U.S. and Canada are being recalled after several people reported the devices caught fire or melted, causing at least one child to be injured.

The recall includes 772,000 Insignia air fryers and air fryer ovens sold at Best Buy, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) announced Thursday. The electronics retailer received more than 100 reports from North American customers stating that their air fryer or air fryer ovens had caught fire, burned or melted.

The devices resulted in seven cases of minor property damage, and two injuries, including an injury to a child's leg, CPSC reported. The commission did not provide specific details as to the extent of the injury.

The affected products were sold in stores and online through the Best Buy website, as well as on eBay and Google, from November 2018 through February 2022. The products ranged in pricing from $30 to $150, the commission said.

"Consumers should immediately stop using the recalled air fryers and air fryer ovens and return the product to Best Buy for a refund in the form of a credit for use at Best Buy stores or Bestbuy.com," CPSC added. "Best Buy is contacting all known purchasers directly to arrange returns and providing pre-paid shipping boxes and labels and return instructions."

In total, Best Buy said it sold about 635,000 of the recalled products in the U.S. and another 137,000 in Canada. According to CPSC, the affected products have the following model numbers: NS-AF32DBK9, NS-AF32MBK9, NS-AF50MBK9, NS-AF53DSS0, NS-AF53MSS0, NS-AF55DBK9, NS-AFO6DBK1 and NS-AFO6DSS1.

The brand name Insignia is on the top or front of each unit, and a rating label can be found on the underside, identifying the brand and model number, the commission added.

The latest recall does not mark the first time an air fryer product has gone up in flames. In November, a woman posted a viral video of her burned stovetop after an air fryer purchased from Costco exploded while she was attempting to make a hash brown.

"[Ten] firemen and one hash brown later," read the caption of the video, which received millions of views when it was originally posted on TikTok.

Months earlier, a 4-year-old girl alerted her parents when she noticed her family's air fryer had caught fire after her father made chicken nuggets and french fries. The child's father responded by grabbing the air fryer with his bare hands and throwing it into their pool, Newsweek previously reported. However, the family's stove was completely destroyed by the fire.

Since air fryers are capable of heating whatever surface they sit on, it is advised to never place the devices on or near a hot gas or electric burner, or inside a heated oven, according to product safety manuals.

Newsweek contacted Best Buy for additional comment.

If you bought an air fryer from Best Buy then yours might be one of the ones that are being recalled.

Insignia and the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission have announced a recall of some of the Insignia brand Air Fryers and Ovens.

According to officials, there is a chance that the products can overheat which potentially leads to a fire.

Here are the Insignia Air Fryers that are being recalled:

NS-AF32DBK9

NS-AF32MBK9

NS-AF50MBK9

NS-AF53DSS0

NS-AF53MSS0

NS-AF55DBK9

Here are the Insignia Air Fryers Ovens that are being recalled:

NS-AF06DBK1

NS-AF06DSS1

What Do I Do If My Air Fryer/Oven is One of the Ones Being Recalled?
Insignia officials have a website where you can go to check out information and register to get a gift card. The most important thing is to STOP using the appliance immediately. Officials say do not take the item back to Best Buy as a gift card will be issued to you for a refund of this product.

How Can I Check the Number on My Insignia Air Fryer/Oven?

You can look at the bottom of your air fryer and/or air fryer oven. On the bottom, you will see a product number. Check it against the numbers above to see if yours is one of the items under this current recall.

What If I don't Have a Receipt?
If you don't have a receipt, it's suggested that you look back to the account you used to pay for the item. You can look up the purchase in your account to show proof of your purchase and provide that information to the company.

What If I Want to Call Someone Instead of Registering at the Website?
If you prefer to speak to someone about how to get reimbursed for your product purchase under this recall, you can call 1800-566-7498 between the hours of 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. Eastern, Monday through Friday.

Nasty ass people probably are not cleaning it properly.

Yeah right.
Months ago, bought the fryer above because the one I had prior, the digital readout and circuit board was above the door opening and noticed steam kept getting in there.

It started doing crazy things, like my wife would set it to 20 mins and then it would jump to something like 70 mins if you don't watch it.
So if steam kept rising in there, who knows what happens to half the fryers out there. Luckily I caught it that the way it was designed that it had a slight gap and air/steam creeped in there.

So had nothing to do with cleaning. But I'm sure mine was a fire waiting to happen.

Your primary will be delegated to the bench and the Ninja will become your starter.

It has replaced my oven (I use the cooktop but not the actual oven).

A Ninja Foodi Grille, a slow cooker, Ninja blender and my microwave is all I need now.

Same here. My homie sold me on it when I saw how good salmon was coming out of it.

I bought this months ago from Slickdeals, was at Walmart for $89.

I prefer a larger fryer, I have a family. Never liked them little basket fryers.

Do the doors close all the way in the middle on these? I've been looking at the french door models and they all seem to have a gap in the middle. Right now I have one that opens down like an oven door, but I want a french door or one that opens like a microwave. I'm careful when I put things in and out, but the fam drips stuff all over the door and it drives me nuts.

Has a slight gap, not air tight.
Doesn't affect it to me.

We cook 4 large salmon steaks and can do 2 whole snappers in there. Love how big it is.

And yeah I didn't like my older fryer when spills used to drip on the door when pulling things out, it flipped down like a toaster oven. I used to put a sheet of foil over the door to take stuff out quickly if I was just turning things over.

But this oven is huge, many things I've flipped without even taking the racks out.

whats the best one to get? going get one soon
