Dr. Oz considering run as Republican for U.S. Senate in Pennsylvania

The TV star would join a growing list of candidates vying for retiring U.S. Sen. Pat Toomey's seat

TV's Dr. Mehmet Oz is considering a U.S. Senate run in Pennsylvania as a Republican. Pennsylvania's primary election takes place May 2017. The photo above was taken of Oz in 2018.

Dr. Oz, the famous TV doctor, thinks he could heal the ailing federal government. That's why he's reportedly considering a 2022 Republican U.S. Senate run in Pennsylvania.

Although the doctor hasn't made an official announcement yet, the Washington Free Beacon reported on Tuesday that Oz has already begun hiring campaign staffers and reaching out to possible allies.

He would join a highly contested race to replace Republican Sen. Pat Toomey, who plans to retire at the end of his term after 11 years in the Senate.

Oz, an Ohio-born and Delaware-raised son of Turkish immigrants whose full name is Mehmet Cengiz Öz, has limited ties to the Keystone State aside from the graduate medical and business degrees he received at the University of Pennsylvania.

Although a spokesperson for the doctor told the Beacon that Oz "has lived and voted in Pennsylvania … since last year," he is currently registered to vote in Bergen County, New Jersey.

It's unclear whether Oz has established residency in Pennsylvania or if he would still need to do that. The Beacon reported that the cardiothoracic surgeon had registered to vote in at least one election in the state using the address of a home in Montgomery County belonging to his mother-in-law.

The doctor would undoubtedly be an outsider in the senate due to his lack of political experience. Oz, who the Beacon reported has donated to both Democrats and Republicans in the past, rose to fame as a health expert on the "Oprah Winfrey Show."

He got his own program, "The Dr. Oz Show," in 2009 which is expected to continue airing new episodes through 2023. An unnamed spokesperson for Oz told the Beacon that the doctor is still focused on his show at this time.

Oz would be entering a crowded race.

At least a dozen other Republicans are now officially running, including Jeff Bartos, a Montgomery County businessman, and Sean Parnell, a retired Army officer embroiled in a messy public custody battle with his ex-wife.

On the Democratic side there are even more declared candidates, including frequent, progressive pundit and current Lt. Gov. John Fetterman; U.S. Rep. Conor Lamb, a Democrat from Mt. Lebanon, Allegheny County, who is more of a centrist with close ties to the Biden administration; and Malcolm Kenyatta, the state representative from North Philly.

Given the extremely tight margin Democrats currently have in the evenly divided senate, the rest of the country is expected to pay close attention to the race in Pennsylvania. The winner will most likely have an outsized influence on national politics going forward.

Pennsylvania's Republican and Democratic primaries will take place on May 17.

Dr. Oz expected to run for Senate in Pennsylvania as a Republican

Mehmet Oz, the celebrity physician, is expected to announce a campaign for Senate in Pennsylvania as a Republican, according to multiple news reports.
Oz would be the latest in a long line of Republicans who are vying to succeed retiring Sen. Pat Toomey (R-Pa.) next year. While he’s never run for public office before, Oz's celebrity status means that he would likely enter the race with broad name recognition.
An announcement could come as soon as Tuesday. During the Monday night airing of his Fox News show, host Sean Hannity teased an upcoming appearance by Oz on Tuesday night, saying that the celebrity doctor would be making a “huge announcement.”

“Hint: Think midterm election,” Hannity said.

That Oz is planning to enter the hotly contested Senate race in Pennsylvania was first reported on Monday by the Philadelphia Inquirer. The Associated Press also reported on Oz’s plans.

With the exit of Republican Sean Parnell from the GOP Senate field last week, the race for the party’s 2022 nomination is wide open. There are currently more than a half-dozen Republicans vying to succeed Toomey, including real estate developer Jeff Bartos and former Ambassador to Denmark Carla Sands.

Former President Trump had endorsed Parnell for the GOP nomination in Pennsylvania. But Parnell faced an onslaught of damaging headlines in recent months, including allegations that he had physically and verbally abused his wife and children. Parnell has denied those allegations.

He ultimately suspended his campaign last week after a judge handed primary custody of his children to his estranged wife.

Oz has lived in New Jersey for years, though he registered to vote in Montgomery County, Pa. last year. Still a run for Senate in Pennsylvania would likely come under some scrutiny.

The Senate race in Pennsylvania is among the most competitive of the 2022 midterm election cycle. With Toomey’s retirement, Democrats see the state as one of their best opportunities to expand their ultra-narrow Senate majority, and a handful of Democrats are already competing for the nomination.

The cardiothoracic surgeon and long-time TV personality will run for the open U.S. Senate seat in Pennsylvania, which will be up for grabs in 2022 when Sen. Pat Toomey retires. Oz will run as a Republican candidate, joining a crowded field of candidates.

Oz announced his candidacy on his website Tuesday afternoon, writing “today, America’s heartbeat is in a code red in need of a defibrillator to shock it back to life… I’m running for U.S. Senate to reignite our divine spark, bravely fight for freedom, and will tell it like it is.”

Could be interesting. Will he abandon the science of medicine and join the army deplorables that reject and mock science?
With the quack shit that he promotes, I think it's pretty safe to say that he abandoned the science of medicine ages ago..... most likely in the dark ages

Trump endorses Dr. Oz for the U.S. Senate

Former president Donald Trump has endorsed fellow TV personality-turned-politician Dr. Mehmet Oz for the U.S. Senate ahead of the Republican primary in Pennsylvania.

"This is all about winning elections in order to stop the Radical Left maniacs from destroying our Country," Trump said in a statement promoting the celebrity heart surgeon-turned-politician this weekend. "I have known Dr. Oz for many years, as have many others, even if only through his very successful television show. He has lived with us through the screen and has always been popular, respected, and smart."

The former president also praised Dr. Oz's medical and academic credentials, adding, "He even said that I was in extraordinary health, which made me like him even more (although he also said I should lose a couple of pounds!)."

The endorsement comes as Republican candidates vie for Trump's support in the key battleground state and in other primaries across the country like Ohio. While the former president has been reserving his support for candidates who reinforce his false claims of voter fraud, it's unclear how much weight a Trump stamp of approval carries for the contested primary elections.

Earlier, Trump had endorsed Sean Parnell, an Army veteran who dropped out of the race after allegations of physical abuse against his wife and children emerged. Parnell has denied those accusations.

In response to the Oz endorsement, Parnell took to Twitter to slam Trump's shift in support.

Another candidate in the race, David McCormick, whose resume more closely fits the establishment Republican mold, had been seeking Trump's endorsement. The former George W. Bush administration official is married to Dina Powell, a former Trump White House official.

Trump is betting on Dr. Oz's electability to sway a race in which McCormick has a slight lead, according to recent poll data.

Pennsylvania Democrats, meanwhile, are waging their own high-stakes primary battle as the party seeks to retain control of the Senate.

Yeah Republicans have to change up their style a little bit because this country demographics is changing rapidly eventually it may come to a point where people stop electing Republicans altogether if they keep up this foolishness especially with Trump

Dr. Oz is considered a "good" doctor because he's on TV and has Ivy League credentials...never mind that other doctors have exposed his quackery. Some think he's been hated on, but he's really been on some bullshit at times.

Just because you're on TV, are board-certified, and went to Ivy League schools doesn't necessarily mean you know what you're talking about...most do, but trust me, not as much as you might think...

The Backlash Over Trump’s Dr. Oz Endorsement Shows His Hold on the GOP Is Slipping
MAGA-world’s disappointment in their Dear Leader could mean they’re getting ready to move on.

220411-dr-oz-trump-hero_jyq9hv

Donald Trump’s recent endorsement of Dr. Mehmet Oz in the Republican primary race for U.S. Senate in Pennsylvania led to a vocal backlash from the right. Breitbart’s Joel Pollack wrote, “This endorsement could divide MAGA in the only way that matters: he could lose America First conservatives over it.”

That remains to be seen. But I do think that if the GOP moves on from Trump in 2024, the backlash over the Dr. Oz endorsement may help us understand how it happened.

Trump cannot be defeated by a frontal attack. Everyone in the Republican Party who has tried that has failed. Trump may be vulnerable, however, to a specific kind of flanking maneuver. And the current stream of criticism may provide some clues as to how that maneuver might be executed.

Look at the kinds of criticism Trump is enduring from the right. Sean Parnell, the former Trump-backed candidate in the race (who dropped out amid abuse allegations), said he was “disappointed” by the endorsement, adding that “Oz is the antithesis of everything that made Trump the best president of my lifetime.”

This sentiment was echoed by Dave Ball, chairman of the GOP in Washington County, Pennsylvania. “I think that President Trump very, very seldom does anything that’s not thought out and doesn’t have a very reasoned and logical basis, but, for whatever reason, in this particular instance, he chose to ignore all of that and endorse Oz,” Ball told the Washington Examiner’s Salena Zito. “People have been calling me all day and asking, ‘What the hell was he thinking?’”

Why would a great/logical president make such a mistake? Conservative writer Erick Erickson hypothesized, “Donald Trump’s staff is sabotaging Trump by convincing him to make the worst possible endorsements.”

This theory was echoed by Rep. Mo Brooks, who recently had his Trump endorsement rescinded. “This is happening because Trump’s surrounded himself by staff who are on McConnell’s payroll & hostile to the MAGA agenda. Everybody telling Trump who to endorse in primaries works for The Swamp,” Brooks said. “They played him. Again.”

“...maybe they’d surmise that Trump was great, a legend, in fact. But it’s time to find a younger alternative.”
Shouldn’t that be a dealbreaker? I mean, if candidate Trump can be bullied or tricked, then can’t that also happen to President Trump?

The notion that Trump is being pushed into these endorsements by staff would also seem to be undercut by the fact that David McCormick—the hedge fund executive who is also running for Senate in Pennsylvania—hired Hope Hicks, Stephen Miller, and other Trump loyalists, precisely for this reason.

Details don’t matter. Like communism, Trump can never fail. He can only be failed.

The lengths Republicans go to make excuses for Trump echoes the old “If only Comrade Stalin knew” trope—which describes why peasants continue to love their leader, despite enduring atrocities and starvation.

It’s frustrating to watch, but considering the extent of Trump’s hold on the GOP, any step forward is positive.

Trump’s political power is derived from highly loyal Republican primary voters. Hitting Trump from the left doesn’t move them. Nor does attempting to shame them for supporting his outrageous behavior. But as people on the right begin to normalize criticizing Trump (albeit, couched in rhetoric blaming others), another possibility opens up: Moving on from Trump.

I know, after everything that’s happened, it still seems unrealistic to believe that Republican voters will disavow Trump. Doing so would serve as a tacit admission that they backed the wrong horse in 2016 and 2020.

But what if these Republicans were given permission to say Trump was a great president, but the opposition hates him too much? The libs would never let him succeed—heck, they stole the presidency from him in 2020, such voters might imagine.

Or maybe they’d surmise that Trump was great, a legend, in fact. But it’s time to find a younger alternative.

They could also pivot to: Trump created a movement that will survive him. But he’s getting older, less “tough,” and besides, Ron DeSantis is less chaotic and better equipped to actually win the culture wars.

Trump pushes Oz to declare victory in undecided Pennsylvania primary
The former president's call for Oz to declare victory is an echo of his own effort to steal a victory in Pennsylvania in the 2020 general election from President Joe Biden.

Pennsylvania Senate candidate Mehmet Oz, left, accompanied by former President Donald Trump, speaks at a May 6campaign rally in Greensburg, Pa.

Former President Donald Trump on Wednesday said Mehmet Oz should declare victory over opponent Dave McCormick in the too-close-to-call Pennsylvania GOP battle for Senate nomination — reprising his conspiratorial playbook from the 2020 presidential election that led to the deadly Jan. 6 insurrection at the Capitol.

“Dr. Oz should declare victory. It makes it much harder for them to cheat with the ballots that they ‘just happened to find,’” Trump said on Truth Social, the social media platform that he helped found.

Oz, who Trump endorsed last month, and McCormick remain locked in a tight contest in Pennsylvania, with only a handful of votes separating the two as of Wednesday morning in one of the highest-profile races of 2022. Thousands of votes and mail-in ballots have yet to be counted — and the closeness of the race signals a potential recount — making Trump’s Wednesday morning declaration premature.

Trump’s call for Oz to declare victory is an echo of his own effort to steal a victory in Pennsylvania in the 2020 general election from President Joe Biden. Trump, ahead in the vote count on election night in Pennsylvania and other states before mail-in ballots had been counted, preemptively declared himself the winner of the presidential election. The then-president went on to lose Pennsylvania, and the election, as more votes were counted over the subsequent days.

But Trump has never conceded that defeat, instead promulgating baseless theories that the election was stolen from him in Pennsylvania and a handful of other key swing states. That bundle of conspiracy theories, often referred to by opponents as the “Big Lie,” prompted Trump supporters to storm the Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021, in an effort to block congressional certification of Biden’s Electoral College victory and remains widespread in the Republican Party.
