Russia asked China for military equipment, U.S. official says
Such a request could indicate that Moscow fears its position after struggling to advance deeper into Ukraine more than two weeks into its invasion.

The Russian government has asked China for military equipment and other support, a U.S. official told POLITICO on Sunday, possibly indicating that Moscow fears its position after struggling to advance deeper into Ukraine more than two weeks into its invasion.

The official, who wasn’t authorized to speak publicly, would not offer specifics about Russia’s request or how the United States came to learn about it. The White House wouldn’t comment on the record.

Since Russia invaded Ukraine on Feb. 24, Russian President Vladimir Putin’s forces have seen their campaign to take the capital, Kyiv, and other regions mostly stalled because of Ukraine’s Western-backed resistance. The introduction of thousands of anti-tank and anti-aircraft missiles, along with other advanced equipment, has helped overmatched Ukrainian troops destroy Russia’s warplanes, helicopters and other vehicles. While Russia maintains a military advantage, experts say, the hardware losses have made an already complicated campaign that much harder.

The revelation of the Kremlin’s request comes a day before national security adviser Jake Sullivan is set to meet Yang Jiechi, China’s top foreign policy official, in Rome to discuss the Russia-Ukraine war.

Earlier on Sunday, Sullivan told CNN’s “State of the Union” that “we are communicating directly, privately to Beijing that there will absolutely be consequences for large-scale sanctions evasion efforts or support to Russia to backfill them. We will not allow that to go forward and allow there to be a lifeline to Russia from these economic sanctions from any country anywhere in the world.”

The U.S. and Europe-led economic sanctions campaign to punish Russia for the invasion has pushed Moscow to seek more economic help from China.

“We have part of our gold and foreign exchange reserves in the Chinese currency, in yuan,” Russian Finance Minister Anton Siluanov said during a Sunday TV interview. “And we see what pressure is being exerted by Western countries on China in order to limit mutual trade with China.”

The military support Russia needs from China is less clear. Perhaps Moscow is asking for “exploratory talks,” said Michael Kofman, Russia director at the Virginia-based CNA think tank, or it “could be chips, which is what they really need.” But the majority of semiconductors, he noted, come from Taiwan, whose government is enforcing the global export restrictions on Russia.

Russia has “definitely set themselves behind several years of procurement in terms of equipment,” Kofman said.

The Kremlin’s request raises important questions about how Russia sees its progress, or lack thereof, on the Ukrainian battlefield and about the Moscow-Beijing relationship writ large.

Seeking military assistance just two weeks into the war could indicate Russian military leaders assess that they need a backfill of equipment to sustain the invasion, especially as the campaign to take Kyiv remains mostly stalled.

And how Chinese leader Xi Jinping chooses to back Putin — with whom he has met 38 times — could provide a clear signal about the strength of their ties. Usually Russia sells weapons to China, so agreeing to the request would underscore a changed dynamic.

Putin:. Xi....Xi...lemme hold a few billion...I gotcha...

Also, if you can spare a few thousand tanks, armored vehicles and rocket launchers...oh, and if you know some cats who wanna scrap, send em my way..

When did supposed superpowers ask for help this fast in a war?

I KNOWWW there are hawks in the military, that would LOVE to get involved in this war, to take out a weakened Russia.

Them slick mofos playing possum..

They gon rope a dope Ukraine..

They're sacrificing thousands of soldiers and equipment to appear weak, and when NATO comes for them, they bring out the A Team.

Funny thing is I've heard some theories damn near this crazy over the last few weeks here.

What A-Team? You gotta get them MFers off the boats first. Russia is losing. The little military money they did have in the budget was spent on London/Paris property, luxury yatchs, and hookers. Yes, hookers with full blown orgies.
Can I post porn in this thread??? Probably not, but that only leaves opportunity for another thread.

Russia is a pure example of a banana boat republic yes men telling their dictator, all is well, while his army is getting its ass kicked.

Newsflash, they already sent in their Special Forces and they still suck. The MFers they are bringing from Syria are about as special as your average Bodega owner with an AK-47.

Putin only option is to bomb the place flat and prey Ukraine surrenders. If they get into a long occupation, Russia will go broke or go in hawk selling the place to the Chinese. Allegedly half the gererals at the Kremlin didn't know there was going to be an invasion. Vlad just told MFers to run Ukraines shit and the Ukrainians was like bitch naw not my bike, and 12 days later Vlad looking like a Southwest Airlines commercial.

Putin fucked himself. Like really fucked himself hard. This nigga about to go out like Heist. Talking big shit but the biggest paper tiger ever. Putin is more like Dr Truth than Dr Evil. At this point he's just a combo of all three (Heist EvilTruth)cus hes a funny lying MFer who can't back up shit he talks.

Its questionable if his nuke arsenal is even working. They may have 6000 on file but that doesn't mean they all work. If he lets them lose, NATO wil make the WW2 Japan nukes look like firecrackers.

Putins biggest issue in the future will be terrorists that look like his own people. Putin will have to watch his back because any Ukrainian, Russian, or Oligarch who lost anything over this conflict is going to want his ass on a plate.

Putin can't afford to send anything else because he needs to worry about his own people killing him. Way to fuck yourself Vlad. Just don't push the nuke button on the way out. If you wanna kill yourself Vlad, pills are better than guns.

 bro what they send that money on

Breh this is one of the biggest fuck ups ever. Putin is making Biden look competent. Think about that. All Biden has to do is keep Zelensky alive. He could be saying all that shit in front of a Hollywood green screen but as long as he's alive Ukraine will have high morale.

When Russia did send in the "A-Team" to get Zelensky the real A-Team private contractors kicked they asses.

Yall thought this was as show?? LOL!! We just didn't see the part where they blow MFers to bits and blow off heads in shit. Torturing prisoners of war is not very Prime Time family friendly. But I guarantee BA Baracus has taken a medal pipe to someone's shin before for directions to Diary Queen.

War time pay bring out the real killers and Russia just don't have the pockets to hire the best.

When Putin asks his generals if you can win you better not say no? That was his first mistake.

America just changed the face of warfare. Even most soilders are stunned how well Javlins and RPGs are doing against Russia punk ass tanks. But if damn everyone has a pocket rocket, RPG, and Javlin. light armored tanks ain't shit but sitting ducks.
Drones are bombing tanks using -----cut that out to not give you niggas ideas--

Russian dont have IR to take out small targets. And even if they did their infantry sucks ass. Rockets are making the Russian tanks irrelevant. This has turn into CoD or Halo with Rocket pack for everyone and making shit like tanks and helicopters damn near a liability.

To put a big ass cherry on top hacker groups like anonymous has been jamming the communications. The Russians are still using old CB radios to communicate. People have been messing with their com frequencies via the Internet.

Vlad better watch his back. A knife or poison will probably take him out

I feel terrible for the Ukrainian people but the media is going extra hard at trying to start WW3. All this talk about how we will need to go end as the humanitarian crisis worsens is straight up bs. I wonder what it is about these peoples suffering that demands US and European intervention when certain others suffering just gets a shrug

them drones and javelins is working the hell outta Russia

I think its the reason why they went to shelling the areas to clear out folks

The thing about it, seems like there’s no way the tanks can see those bomb dropping drones
Same with javelins

urban warfare with tanks and no air support seem like a bad Recipe in this situation

US warns Vladimir Putin as he takes war to the West
Russian leader 'pushes boundaries' after 35 killed in strike on Ukrainian base near Polish border
Sofia Barbarani13 March 2022 • 9:40pm

The US warned Russia that it would face Nato's "full force" if attacks on Ukraine strayed beyond the border after Vladimir Putin brought his war to within 15 miles of Poland with a missile strike on foreign fighters.
Russia boasted that it had killed "up to 180" foreign fighters and destroyed a cache of weapons donated by the West after using long-range missiles to target a military training centre near the city of Lviv hosting volunteer fighters from abroad.
Jake Sullivan, the White House national security adviser, suggested that Nato would engage in direct conflict with Russia if Moscow accidentally hit Nato territory in Poland.
"If there is a military attack on Nato territory, it would ... bring the full force of the Nato alliance to bear in responding to it," he said.
It came as Michael Gove, the Cabinet minister, warned that Putin was "pushing the boundaries" in warfare as he accused the Russian president of having "no moral limits".

Mr Gove described the targeting of the base in Yavoriv, called the International Centre for Peacekeeping and Security and previously used by Nato troops to train Ukrainian soldiers, as a "significant" development. No Nato troops were at the site at the time of the attack.

While the Kremlin said the air assault killed 180 mercenaries and destroyed foreign military aid, local officials said 35 had died and 134 were injured.
A government minister said that while attacks on support convoys containing military aid were "part of war", any assault outside Ukraine's borders would be a "big moment" in the conflict.
In a weekend of fierce fighting, Russian forces were accused of using banned phosphorus munitions during an attack on Popasna, in eastern Ukraine. Phosphorus burns at more than 2,700 degrees Celsius and is almost impossible to put out once it touches the skin.
Russian soldiers were also said to have deliberately targeted an American video journalist who was killed when troops opened fire in Irpin, near Kyiv.

Brent Renaud, who had previously worked for The New York Times, was shot in the neck as he went to film fleeing refugees. It is the first reported death of a foreign journalist in the war.
Mr Sullivan told CBS News that his government was trying to establish exactly how the journalist had died before it would "execute appropriate consequences".
He said the "brazen aggression" shown by Russia was illustrated by troops targeting civilians, hospitals, places of worship "and they have targeted journalists".
Boris Johnson spoke to Volodymyr Zelensky, the Ukrainian president, condemning the killing of Mr Reynaud and the Russian capture of the mayors of Dniprorudne and Melitopol. He told Mr Zelensky: "Putin's barbaric actions are testing not just Ukraine but all of humanity."

A train carrying refugees fleeing eastern Ukraine also came under fire, killing a conductor and injuring a passenger, the country's national rail authority said.

Footage emerged of a school in the besieged southern city of Mykolaiv on fire after being hit by Russian munitions. An air strike on a monastery sheltering civilians in the east wounded 30. Ukraine's armed forces said they were launching counter attacks in Mykolaiv.

The extent of the humanitarian crisis and images of decimated homes and buildings prompted the Pope to call for an immediate ceasefire before entire cities were "reduced to cemeteries".
"In the name of God I ask you: Stop this massacre," he told crowds gathered in Rome's St Peter's Square.
The UK is to send more than 500 power generators to Ukraine to help combat the effects of widespread power cuts during a harsh winter. Mr Johnson also said Britain would discuss sending further defensive weaponry.
It came amid reports that Russia has requested military support from China as Moscow is said to be running out of some weapons. One US official told the Financial Times China was open to the idea.
Military experts on Sunday night said the training centre was targeted in an attempt to warn off other foreign fighters and stem shipments of military aid from the West into Ukraine.
It also raised the prospect that Putin considered an assault so close to a Nato ally as a strategy to bring Western leaders into top level negotiations.
The attack came hours after Sergei Ryabkov, Russia's deputy foreign minister, warned that shipments of military aid to Ukraine were "legitimate targets".

One volunteer fighter with an American or Canadian accent who was at the base told The Telegraph the bombardment "was like hell on Earth". He said he had heard that British, Irish, American and German volunteers had been trained at the base since the war started.
In recent years, the base was used by Nato allies, including soldiers from the UK, US and Canada, to train Ukrainian troops.
The joint manoeuvres were introduced after Nato launched the Partnership for Peace programme in 1994, meant to develop relationships between member states and former Soviet bloc countries.
Despite the intense fighting, both sides gave their most upbeat assessment yet of the prospects for progress at bilateral talks.
Mykhailo Podolyak, one of the Ukrainian negotiators, said it was possible the delegations could draw up draft agreement, adding: "Russia is already beginning to talk constructively. I think that we will achieve some results literally in a matter of days."

I asked this question a while back but is Russia using any drones? It seems to me that sending high tech drones to blow shit up would be more effective than them big ass tanks and foot soldiers. This leads me to believe they really don't have the most up to date military equipment like many have said.

I think there’s a few things that happened…

This me forming a idea with limited thoughts on combating

I felt Russia really planned to go and occupy with some confrontations.

In the beginning there was way too many videos of Ukrainians talking shit to RussiAns with guns…

My brother said he give them Russian soldiers props for being calm in those situations, because if that was them(Americans that went to Iraq) it would’ve been some dead and fucked up Ukrainians

far as drones, Ukraine don’t want the drone that Russia have…actually no one wants it

but don’t seem like Russia have any drones…maybe that’s what they seeking from China… softwares to fly them

U.S. growing alarmed over Israel's safe harbor for Russian oligarchs
Ben SamuelsMar. 13, 2022 9:40 PM
WASHINGTON – Israel’s apparent hesitancy in joining international sanctions against Russia while failing to clamp down on oligarchs has provoked rare public warnings from the Biden administration,
as U.S. lawmakers and Russia experts urge a further crackdown on Vladimir Putin’s allies aiming to use Israel as their safe haven.

The admonitions have come even though, in the two and a half weeks since Russia invaded Ukraine, U.S. officials have largely been empathetic to Israel’s balancing act between supporting Ukraine and not alienating the Russian president.

Victoria Nuland, the U.S. under secretary of state for political affairs, told Israel’s Channel 12 News on Friday that Israel should join the financial and export-control sanctions that Washington has levied on Putin.

“We have to squeeze the regime. We have to deny it the income that it needs, squeeze the oligarchs around him; we squeeze its economy,” she said, adding that “you don’t want to become the last haven for dirty money that’s fueling Putin’s wars.”

Nuland said that Israel joining the financial sanctions was most important to the United States, more so than gestures such as Israel potentially providing military aid or playing a role in mediation efforts between Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.

Aaron David Miller, a senior fellow at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace who spent decades helping Democratic and Republican administrations craft Mideast policy, tweeted that Nuland’s “hammering” of Israel marked the “toughest battering of Israeli policy since [the] crisis began or of any policy in [a] very long while.”

Nuland’s comments come amid reports that at least 14 private jets departing from Russia have landed at Israel’s Ben-Gurion International Airport since the Western world launched its unprecedented sanctions against Putin’s inner circle.

Since the crisis began, and all the more so since the February 24 invasion, Jewish businesspeople operating in Russia have expressed an interest in taking their money out of the country. The Sunday Times, meanwhile, has cited estate agents and tax lawyers reporting an influx of interest from Russians investing in Israeli property as Western sanctions go into effect.

“At least 14 private jets from Russia have landed in Israel in the past 10 days amid the latest round of sanctions targeting oligarchs. At the same time, I’ve been told that no private jet company in the U.S. will transport a person with a Russian passport,” tweeted Bill Browder, whose investment fund and asset management company was once Russia’s largest foreign investor and who now describes himself as Putin’s “number one enemy.”

One jet, owned by Russian-Israeli oligarch Roman Abramovich, landed the day Russia’s invasion began. The United States has yet to follow Britain and Canada in imposing sanctions on Abramovich, reportedly Israel’s second-richest person who made much of his fortune through the privatization of Russia’s oil companies.

Several leading Democratic members of Congress – including Reps. Steve Cohen, Maria Elvira Salazar and Tom Malinowski – have urged the Biden administration to crack down on Abramovich. In a letter, they said that “U.S. sanctions against Abramovich are conspicuous by their absence.”

They noted that Abramovich obtained Portuguese citizenship based on a law offering naturalization to descendants of Sephardi Jews who were expelled from Spain and Portugal during the Inquisition. The lawmakers said that this move was “ostensibly to evade sanctions.”

Last week, Portuguese officials detained a leading Portuguese rabbi as part of an inquiry into how Abramovich received citizenship.

In addition to the Cohen-Salazar-Malinowski letter, at least three separate pieces of legislation have been introduced aimed at potentially sanctioning Abramovich.

Also last week, Israel’s Yad Vashem Holocaust memorial and museum “suspended” an eight-figure donation from Abramovich immediately after Britain levied sanctions on him. This came one month after Yad Vashem – alongside several other Israeli institutions – urged the U.S. ambassador to Israel, Tom Nides, not to impose sanctions on Abramovich, because of “his contribution to the Jewish people.”

“We request that Abramovich be sanctioned as a matter of urgency,” the lawmakers wrote. “His blood money helps fuel Putin’s unprovoked and illegal war against Ukraine. Once sanctioned, we urge you to use all necessary authorities to seize this money and use it to support Ukraine’s defense, repatriation and rebuilding.”

Abramovich, who allegedly controls a large number of Russian companies, denies any direct ties to Putin.

Can somebody explain to me how it is ok for the countries to seize the assets of Russian Billionaires? If they aren't soldiers or actively involved in war, why is it ok? Why hasn't Putin done anything about it?

If Russia decides to ban oil sales to Europe, gas prices would go through the roof - $300 a barrel, it would be like the oil embargo. I have my gas siphoning kit and screw driver to steal from cars.

Europe would scramble to buy oil from U.S. supplier paying double or triple the prices. It is like the chip shortage, no fucking redundancy at all.
