Russia admits using brutal thermobaric weapons in Ukraine, says UK
The United Kingdom’s Ministry of Defence said on Wednesday that their Russian counterparts had confirmed the use of a rocket launcher that fires brutal thermobaric munitions in Ukraine.

U.K. Ministry of Defence tweeted, “The Russian MoD has confirmed the use of the TOS-1A weapon system in Ukraine. The TOS-1A uses thermobaric rockets, creating incendiary and blast effects. Watch the video below for more information about this weapon and its devastating impact.” The U.K. MoD also shared a video with pre-existing footage of the Russian multiple launch rocket system (MLRS) in use.

Thermobaric weapons are particularly controversial because of how they deliver damage. The munitions create a mix of fuel and oxygen that creates a blast effect that lasts longer than conventional explosives. According to the U.S. Defense Intelligence Agency (DIA), these thermobaric explosives create a powerful pressure wave that causes a rarefaction or “vacuum” effect. This vacuum effect has led to some referring to thermobaric weapons as “vacuum bombs.”

The U.K.’s Ministry of Defence said the TOS-1A’s thermobaric munitions have a “devastating” effect that “can destroy infrastructure and cause significant damage to internal organs and flash burns, resulting in death to those exposed.”

Thermobaric weapons have been used by a number of countries, including Russia, the U.K. the U.S. The GBU-42/B, also known as the Mother of All Bombs (MOAB) is a thermobaric bomb that is considered the most powerful non-nuclear weapon in the U.S. arsenal.

The use of thermobaric munitions have been rumored throughout the last two weeks of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. Some users on social media speculated that a particularly large blast near the Ukrainian city of Kharkiv was caused by one such thermobaric weapon.

Last week, when asked about Russia’s alleged use of so-called “vacuum bombs,” White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki said, “I don’t have any confirmation of that. We have seen the reports. If that were true, it would potentially be a war crime.”

While the U.K.’s MoD reported that it has Russian confirmation of the use of thermobaric weapons, the U.S. Department of Defense has not yet shared that assessment. During a Wednesday press briefing, Pentagon Press Secretary John Kirby was asked about Russia’s alleged use of such weapons and replied, “no indications that thermobaric weapons — no evidence of that that I can speak to.”

While the U.S. DoD has not confirmed Russia’s use of thermobaric weapons House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) said she discussed the issue with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy in a Wednesday phone call.

“We talked about weapons that Putin is using, weapons prohibited in the Geneva Conventions, including cluster bombs and vacuum bombs, which caused severe suffering,” Pelosi told reporters, as Fox News reported.

The Geneva Conventions, which actually consist of four treaties and three protocols, does not specifically ban thermobaric weapons, however, the conventions do constrain the uses of force in war times. The Convention on Certain Conventional Weapons, also does not specifically ban thermobaric weapons but does seek the prohibition of weapons “which may be deemed to be excessively injurious or to have indiscriminate effects.”

Human Rights Watch is one particular group that has argued thermobaric bombs could be considered banned weapons, especially when used near highly populated civilian areas. The organization told Fox News that thermobaric bombs are “prone to indiscriminate use” due to their large blast radius.

“In urban settings it is very difficult to limit the effect of enhanced blast weapons to combatants,” Human Rights Watch added. “And the nature of enhanced blast weapons makes it virtually impossible for civilians to take shelter from their destructive effect.”

Believe what you want, ...
Should it mean something to me that I have your permission?
Our government would NEVER lie to us....
I have no illusions about the USA's capacity to lie to its citizens.
... an agreement between the Department of Defense of the United States of America & the Ministry of Health of Ukraine Concerning Cooperation in the Area of Prevention Proliferation of Technology, Pathogens & Expertise that could be Used in the Development of Biological Weapons, Signed in Kiev, August 29, 2005.
It sounds like, even from your own words, the agreement referenced was entered into for cooperation to prevent the use of bio-weapons, NOT manufacture or distribute them.

You also have my permission to believe what you want. :)

Germany Is Stalling EU Efforts to Broaden Russia’s SWIFT Ban

Berlin and others also remain against measures on oil, ports Stance risks creating split in response to Russia’s attacks

Germany has emerged as the main roadblock to broaden European Unionsanctions against Russia by targeting the country’s biggest bank and its energy sector.

Berlin is the leading power resisting efforts to add Sberbank PJSC to the list of Russian financial institutions cut off from SWIFT -- the bank messaging system behind much of global trade -- according to multiple diplomats familiar with the matter and documents seen by Bloomberg.

Sberbank, which holds about half of Russian retail deposits, was excluded from the initial list of banks being removed from SWIFT as part of a decision to shield energy-related transactions, but calls to strengthen penalties from member states in central and eastern Europe have grown as Russia intensifies attacks on Ukraine.

Documents show that Germany has repeatedly urged caution over the move during diplomatic meetings that have taken place in recent days, including among ministers. Chancellor Olaf Scholz has also come out publicly, calling for restraint on sanctions that could impact energy.

He said this week that he opposes cutting off supplies from Russia, calling deliveries of oil and gas of “essential importance” to the European economy and making clear that continuing energy imports is a “conscious decision.”

Germany’s stance risks creating a split in a key aspect of allies’ efforts to punish the Kremlin over its war on Ukraine. President Joe Biden announced on Tuesday that the U.S. will ban imports of Russian fossil fuels including oil, in a move that was in part matched by the U.K.

After Germany’s surprise pledge to deliver weapons to Ukraine and accelerate defense spending, the country is again drawing criticism as it seeks to protect its economy, which relies on Russia for more than half of its gas supplies and more than a third of its oil.

“Germany has done a heroic deed? No, you are doing too little,” Ukraine’s Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba wrote in a commentary in the Welt newspaper on Wednesday.

German officials are aware that pressure could increase to target energy supplies, but are cautious about escalating tensions at the moment and see that position supported by other member states, according to people familiar with the government’s thinking.

Finance Minister Christian Lindner has said discussions on additional financial sanctions are ongoing and nothing can be ruled out.

One of the EU diplomats said that other major western European governments, including Italy, would align behind the SWIFT move if there was a united position. Senior EU officials also support the measure, one of the people said.

Another official said that technical work on Sberbank and SWIFT was ongoing. Gazprombank is another entity that has so far been exempt from the measure.

Germany has also raised concerns over advanced proposals to restrict access to ports, arguing that the measure could hit trade in goods that haven’t been sanctioned, according to EU diplomats and one of the documents.

Germany and others are also opposed to the EU following the U.S. and the U.K. in banning oil imports from Russia. European nations rely more heavily on Russian fuels than the U.S. and governments are concerned about the impact on businesses and consumers already buckling under surging prices.

Hungary’s Prime Minister Viktor Orban said he was against joining those measures. “We still need the gas and oil that comes from Russia,” he said in a video posted on Twitter by a spokesperson.

Oil continued its rally above $126 a barrelon Wednesday. Futures in New York have soared more than 35% since the invasion of Ukraine. Russia is the source of more than a quarter of Europe’s oil imports, according to the European Commission.

As part of a strategy to wean the continent off Russian energy, the EU’s executive arm noted that there are more potential alternatives for oil and coal supplies than for gas, where Russia provides more than 40% of the EU’s total consumption. The situation is even more extreme for Germany.

French Finance Minister Bruno Le Maire noted this week that the initial decision to exclude some Russian banks from SWIFT was agreed by all 27 EU member states, taking into account varying levels of dependence on Russian gas.

As the current holder of the presidency of the EU, France is acting as a mediator and hasn’t publicly taken a stance.

While Sberbank and the Russian Central Bank were initially spared, “all options are on the table,” he told broadcaster BFM TV this week. “All decisions are effective if they are taken in European unity.”

Japan says Kuril Islands 'primordially Japanese, Russia's occupation against int'l order'

While Japan claims the Iturup, Kunashir, Shikotan & Habomai islands in the Kuril Island chain as theirs, Russia claims sovereignty over the entire island chain.

In the wake of escalating global tensions caused by the Russia-Ukraine war, Japan's Foreign Minister Yoshimasa Hayashi, on Tuesday, March 8, referred to the Kuril Islands as an integral part of the country and not Russia's. During a debate in the National Diet (Parliament), he termed the region as the original territories of Japan. Affirming that Japan's stance on the long-standing disputed territory remains unchanged, the Minister said the islands are 'primordially Japanese'.

"Northern territories (Kuril Islands) are territories to which the sovereignty of our country extends, they are also our ancestral territories. There are no changes in our position on this matter," the Japanese Minister said.

Condemning Russia over its military offensive in Ukraine, Japan has ramped up its demands over the Kuril Islands. Addressing the Parliamentary Debate, the Japanese Minister stressed that Russia's occupation in the Islands contradicts international order as does the ongoing Russian army attack on Ukraine.

Kuril Islands dispute between Japan & Russia

While Japan claims the Iturup, Kunashir, Shikotan and Habomai islands in Russia's Kuril Island chain, known in Russia as the Southern Kurils, based on the 1855 bilateral treaty on trade and borders, the Kremlin claims rights and sovereignty over the said islands. It is pertinent to note the Soviet Union and Japan in 1956 signed a declaration wherein Moscow agreed to consider the chances of transferring the Shikotan and Habomai islands to Japan, while the Iturup, Kunashir islands were not mentioned in the enforceable contract. While Japan continued to consider the un-named islands as part of the solution to the issue, it did not even up its claims to all the islands.

In February 2022 Japan raised strong objections to Russia conducting military drills close to the South Kuril Islands after being informed of the firing drills near the Kunashir Islands. "In this regard, we have protested to Russia through diplomatic channels. The strengthening of Russia's military presence in the Northern Territories is unacceptable and contradicts the government's (Japan's) position," Japanese Chief Cabinet Secretary Hirokazu Matsuno had said.

Previously, in October 2021 Japanese PM Fumio Kishida, during a virtual meeting in the Upper House of Japan's Parliament, had said, "The sovereignty of our country extends to the Northern Territories (Southern Kuril Islands). The government has not changed its stance on the matter. The subject of negotiations on the conclusion of the peace treaty (with Russia) is the ownership of four islands. This is Japan's consistent position."

:smh:

"Other than that, we got especially curious in the detailed information regarding USA's organization of on the territory of Ukraine of a project relating to investigating the transfer of pathogens by the birds migrating between Ukraine and Russia and other neighboring countries."

This shit is Baghdad bob level insane but you have some of Us clapping like seals. :smh:

Reminds me of "Operation INFEKTION" from the 80's when they had crazy cacs believing that the US invented HIV. Secret labs, US doctors experimenting basically the same dumb shit they are trying to build up now re covid. Never thought that 35-40+ years later this dumb shit would still be in use.

While Russian President Vladimir Putin is raining bombs on Ukrainian cities, his top propagandists are most concerned about getting bombarded with text messages, and losing the information war to Ukraine.

On Thursday’s episode of The Evening With Vladimir Soloviev, state TV propagandist Vladimir Soloviev complained that he and editor-in-chief of RT Margarita Simonyan are being terrorized by unknown individuals, receiving endless calls and texts about Russia’s military activities in Ukraine. Hegriped: “Margarita and I can show our telephones to demonstrate that we’re getting a thousand calls and texts per hour.”

Several days earlier, two other state TV propagandists, Olga Skabeeva and her husband Evgeny Popov, also reported a barrage of calls. Skabeeva, who hosts the state TV show 60 Minutes, angrily yelled that Ukrainians or their supporters have been “endlessly calling everybody, everybody, all citizens of Russia, including me and Evgeny!” Later in the show, she loudly interrupted a panelist to grumble about being subjected to a “mass attack that started at 2 a.m… we started getting calls from the territory of Ukraine, two to three minutes apart, Ukrainian and Polish phone numbers calling nonstop… And then, text messages with threats to kill me and my family, and photos—endless photos—of corpses, which they say are the corpses of Russian soldiers!”

A lot of them out there but this is probably the most popular one.
