Prince spent most of his life performing, building an award-winning career that spanned more than 40 years. His soulful ballads and up-tempo styles shaped the music of many generations. Tragically, in 2016, Prince died in his Minnesota home. Only 57 years old, the legendary musician died from an accidental fentanyl overdose. At the time of his death, he did not have a will.

For the past six years, the rock star’s siblings have battled over his estate. In early 2022, the involved parties finally came to an agreement, and distribution of the “Purple Rain” singer’s estate will begin soon.

Following the untimely death of the Rock and Roll Hall of Famer, his five half-siblings and sister Tyka Nelson became embroiled in a lengthy legal battle to determine how the estate would be distributed. Tens of millions of dollars have gone to lawyers and consultants. Since the legal proceedings began, two of the siblings have died.

In 2020, the Internal Revenue Service estimated Prince’s estate was worth $163.2 million. Comerica Bank & Trust, administrator for the estate, claimed it was worth far less, appraising the assets at $82.3 million.
After six long years, an agreement has finally been reached. According to the Minneapolis Star Tribune, the parties finalized all real estate holdings last spring. It took until October to value the “intangible assets such as rights to Prince’s music.

The final valuation of the settlement filed in Carver County probate court in Minnesota is $156.4 million, with distribution to begin in February. The IRS and Minnesota Department of Revenue agreed to the amount, dropping a $6.4 million penalty levy placed on the estate. The federal government will impose a 40% estate tax on $151.4 million, and the state will get 16%, with only $3 million being exempt.

Contrary to popular belief, not all famous people have a will. According to Forbes, Prince was not the only musician to die without clear-cut plans for their massive fortunes. Rock stars Jimi Hendrix, Bob Marley, Kurt Cobain, Tupac Shakur, Barry White, James Brown, and Amy Winehouse did not have wills when they died.

When Michael Jackson died, it was believed he did not have a will. After the King of Pop’s mother filed a claim, a will was discovered, and the courts took seven years to determine the value of his estate.

Grunge reported Jackson’s mother received 40% of the estate, and his children split another 40%. The remaining 20% went to charities. The “Thriller” performer’s estate, once believed to be worth $482 million, was finalized at $111 million.

You also have a will. When my grandma passed when I was in high school and seeing the family fight over that little money burned that in my head then. Got a will the year I graduated from college. I'll update with the inclusion of a wife and kids one day, but right now? Everything to ma dukes. No questions asked.

It's ironic that and artiste who spent much of his career fighting to protect his music earnings now has to pay much of it to the state and taxman.

SHOULD YOU HAVE A LIVING TRUST INSTEAD OF A WILL?
Only a few years ago, people set up living trusts almost exclusively to save on taxes. Today, they are used to avoid Probate and for other important purposes as well. Many articles have been written to explain living trusts. All of those I have seen are too technical, contain wrong information, or come to conclusions I disagree with. This article explains the living trust as I see it. It is not meant to be a comprehensive discussion of the subject, but it should help you to understand a typical living trust and its plan...

Estate Planning is important, I am administrator of a small estate now, and the attorneys are taking chunks because their was no will in place. A lot of people don't care about shit when they die, especially if they have no relationship with the heirs.

Actually there is no lesson learned on this in regards to prince. He had many, many opportunities to leave a will but choose not too. He felt since he can't take it with him, let them sort it out. I like prince but there are somethings he did wrong while he lived and this is one of them. Ppl like prince have lawyers up the ass and since EVERY lawyer can do a damn will easily. Wills for lawyers is like breathing underwater too a fish, so when a celebrity, entertainer, etc, etc, die without a will, they were making a conscious decision not to draft one up because they simply did not want to do so.

As a lawyer I can say this without a doubt, It's not easy trying to convince, everyday hard working person to do a will. It's like pulling teeth. I've tried to tell all my friends and family to get one done, even offered to help them draft a will, or give them info on how to do it but nobody has done it. they all talk a good game of they gonna do it,, but never make the time, as a result, days turn into weeks, which turn into months which turns in years. I've given up trying to help my friends and family because it's not important to them. If we were to take a poll of how many bgol have wills, I'd seriously doubt if man do.

The biggest question is how the fuck did MJ‘s people get his estate valued at $111 million. He had debt out the ass but his catalog and the Sony/ATV was 2 billion+. How did they pull that shit off?

That's on paper. I thought Sony bought Michaels's share of Sony/ATV for $750 Million. Not even a Billion. You see a lot of artists selling off their Catalogs now turning that "Theoretical Money" into real money, especially if they are older. It makes it easier for the estate to be managed in the event of their death. It also relieves them of the burden to manage it to create revenue.

Even with a will the gubment gets the estate tax for estates valued at over about 6 millie.

I'd say better hurry and take a flight out to Minneapolis and book a tour of his home. Shit is amazing. They gon shut that shit down soon watch

What they gonna do next, go after every artist he ever worked with. People move like vultures when they never put the work in to earn the money or fortune of those who pass away

Oh well, Prince should have had a will or trust set up.

WHAT THE FUCK!!!? MAN HIS SISTER IS SO FULL OF SHIT. SHE GON SHUT DOWN PAISLEY PARK TOURS SOON WATCH. BETTER GO WHILE YOU STILL CAN CAUSE ITS AN AMAZING EXPERIENCE. FUCKIN BITCH!!! THIS IS WHY PRINCE SHOULD HAVE HAD HIS WILL IN ORDER. :smh: THIS IS A FUCKIN DISGRACE.
I think even with a Will they would’ve pulled this. I couldn’t see prince or any artist writing that their friends could keep their names

And a living Will. Some states don't require you to notarize it but do it anyway man. Don't let the State hold up your shit :smh: Put a copy in your dry safes and give copies to your executors with DATES. Also place a copy in a readily available place in case you die and die with the safe combo. Prince spinning in his grave.

Nah. I don't think with a will his sister would be able to do this. She's the driving force behind this bullshit. Next, she gon sell Paisley Park and all his memorabilia in it watch. The Bentley, all his stuff from the Purple Rain movie in there and all of his guitars. Greedy ass fuckin bitch!!! Like I said though, ultimately this is Prince fault for not having his stuff in proper order. :smh:

Greedy motherfuckers! Why? Prince never had an issue with that! At least Morris did perform with the man, them greedy assholes didn't do shit but wait until the man died!

Exactly,Prince never had an issue with it,this is straight bullshit!
