Hospital refusing heart transplant for man who won't get vaccinated

The covid experts are saying cigarette smokers are more protected from covid because of smoking cigarettes

Are smokers protected against SARS-CoV-2 infection (COVID-19)? The origins of the myth | npj Primary Care Respiratory Medicine (nature.com)

The studies were not peer reviewed, or really even a topic of discussion by scientists. And several of the studies were actually funded by the tobacco industry (Smoking is still big in China) The link above goes into detail how shoddy the studies were, so it's not scientists keeping the truth from you, it's scientists ignoring it because it's pretty obvious most of the studies are bullshit.

Near the beginning of the pandemic they gave money to the doctors and the hospitals. It was extra money if you got diagnosed with covid. And more money if you died in the hospital with covid. One lady I know her daughter had died before the pandemic and it was not covid. They came to her for her permission to change the death certificate to covid but she would not go along with it and told them she was not changing her daughter death certificate......

The medical examiner makes the determination on if a death certificate should be revised, not the hospital. And even in cases where they aren't involved, you still have to prove it.

You are bring up the same old Trump talking points from two years ago, long debunked.

My brother works for one of the largest lung transplant centers on the east coast and this is more common than you'd think. Flu vaccine, stopping drinking, smoking, etc are all requirements and people refuse to comply all the time. It's also an indicator that they likely won't keep up with the meds they'll need for the rest of their life

Some places will do liver transplants for people who haven't been sober for 6 months prior as is usually the case based on the idea that addiction is a disease and we are essentially punishing them for being sick. The problem when you try to apply this to the unvaccinated is that it means susceptibility to misinformation is also a disease which I don't agree with. This is the best article I've read on the issue and I agree with this doctor's take on it even if it is an unpopular view:

Udo Schuklenk, Ontario Research Chair in bioethics at Queens University and co-editor of the journal Bioethics, questions the argument that vaccine refusers are victims of misinformation.

"There's many people in my field who go on about equity considerations, and [how] these people don't know better and they have been misled," he said. "And my view is, they have made their autonomous choice.

"And if you're telling me that they are unable to make a sensible choice, then we should take this choice away from them. But we should not, on the one hand, give them this choice, and then not hold them accountable for it.

"The vast majority of people in my field of bioethics would disagree with me on what I just said. They'd say there's many people who don't know better and have been misled. And my point is, that may well be true, but then this should have a consequence on the kind of choices that these people are permitted to make."

Transplant patients get pumped with so much medication for this to be a deal breaker for him is stupid
Yes they do and the meds they have to take after surviving surgery, meds that they will have to take for life to keep the body from rejecting the organ that was transplanted.....The body be like" THIS ISN'T MY MOTHERFUCKING HEART,WHO'S HEART IS THIS?JAMES CASANOVA'S....NOW I'M A FUCKIN I-TALIAN, SPAGHETTI ALL IN MY DREAMS" lol

No that was a few months back. I guess I should have posted it. They said that this was the only time there was a benefit to smoking
Smoking would be an underlying issue. That would make it easier for a respiratory illness to set in.

Researchers find correlation between smoking history and COVID-19 severity | NHLBI, NIH

In a research letter published in JAMA Internal Medicineexternal link, physicians from the Cleveland Clinic shared an analysis from a patient registry that found cigarette smoking correlated with a higher number of COVID-19 hospitalizations and deaths.

Out of 7,102 patients included in the review, 6,020 had never smoked, 910 were former smokers, and 172 smoke. The researchers concluded that cumulative smoking history, measured by pack years of smoking, may be a risk factor for severe COVID-19 outcomes. Compared to patients who had never smoked, patients who smoked the most – the equivalent of smoking a pack of cigarettes a day for more than 30 years – were twice as likely to be hospitalized for COVID-19. Heavy smokers also had a greater chance of dying from COVID-19, compared to patients without a smoking history. The study was funded by the NHLBI.

The FDA, for instance, issued an update on Tuesday that said smokers may be more vulnerable to respiratory illnesses such as COVID-19.

“There's never been a better time to quit smoking,” the FDA said.

A Boston hospital says it won't consider performing a heart transplant on a patient who refuses to get vaccinated against COVID-19, CBS Boston reports.

DJ Ferguson, 31, is fighting for his life at Brigham and Women's Hospital and in desperate need of a heart transplant.

His father, David Ferguson, is speaking out passionately on behalf of his son who, he told CBS Boston, "has gone to the edge of death to stick to his guns and he's been pushed to the limit."

DJ's family says he was at the front of the line to receive a transplant but hospital policy stipulates that he's no longer eligible because he hasn't received the vaccination. And David Ferguson says his son simply won't.

"It's kind of against his basic principles — he doesn't believe in it," David Ferguson says. "It's a policy they are enforcing and so, because he won't get the shot, they took him off the list (for) a heart transplant."

Brigham and Women's released a statement saying, "Like many other transplant programs in the United States — the COVID-19 vaccine is one of several vaccines and lifestyle behaviors required for transplant candidates in the Mass General Brigham system in order to create both the best chance for a successful operation and also the patient's survival after transplantation."

Dr. Arthur Caplan, the head of medical ethics at NYU Grossman School of Medicine, explains that being vaccinated is necessary for this type of procedure.

"Post any transplant, kidney, heart whatever, your immune system is shut off," Caplan said. "The flu could kill you, a cold could kill you, COVID could kill you. The organs are scarce, we are not going to distribute them to someone who has a poor chance of living when others who are vaccinated have a better chance post-surgery of surviving."

DJ is a father of two children with a third child on the way. His family says they're not sure what they plan to do. They're thinking about transferring him, but he may be too weak to be moved.

"We are aggressively pursuing all options, but we are running out of time," David Ferguson said.

And while the family says DJ has received great care from doctors and nurses at Brigham and Women's, they just don't agree with the heart transplant COVID vaccination policy.

"I think my boy is fighting pretty damn courageously and he has integrity and principles he really believes in and that makes me respect him all the more," David Ferguson said.

Which is why the family is sticking by his side and hoping for the best. "It's his body. It's his choice," Ferguson added.

You can't make this dumb shit up. He trusts the doctors/nurses/medicine/science enough to let them replace his heart but doesn't trust the vaccine they also recommend? :smh:

If this hospital is denying a patient life saving surgery based on his immunity status then this sets a bad precedence.
I was under the impression that hospitals and doctors were bound by the Hippocratic oath to preserve life.
The hospital could've gave him a covid test and if he's negative then they should isolate him in a sanitized, sterile room. On the day of surgery they should test him again 30 minutes before surgery and if he's negative for covid then they can procede. If he's positive then they would have to deny or abort the transplant surgery.

They're trying to preserve the life of the next in line who HAS taken the precautions necessary. Dude played Roulette and lost.

Man. This is sad mainly because that covid is going to get in him one way or the other. If you at the front of the line you might as well take that processed version and save your life.

Would you give a crackhead a new heart? What about a lung to a smoker? Or liver to a iv drug user?

Why waste an organ on someone that's going to throw it away?

If there was a surplus of human organs available at the time I certainly would.
Just because someone has a substance abuse problem doesn't always mean that they are the scum of the earth. It doesn't mean that they should be undeserving of basic human rights and dignities.

A young father is being denied a heart transplant because he won’t get vaccinated against Covid-19.

The 31-year-old’s father David Ferguson told CBS Boston that his son DJ is fighting to stay alive at Brigham and Women’s Hospital.

“My son has gone to the edge of death to stick to his guns and he’s been pushed to the limit,” Mr Ferguson told the TV station.

DJ’s family say that he was at the front of the line to receive a heart but that according to hospital policy, he’s not eligible because he’s not been vaccinated.

Mr Ferguson said getting vaccinated is against his son’s “basic principles” and that “he doesn’t believe in it”.

The hospital said in a statement that “like many other transplant programs in the United States – the Covid-19 vaccine is one of several vaccines and lifestyle behaviors required for transplant candidates in the Mass General Brigham system in order to create both the best chance for a successful operation and also the patient’s survival after transplantation”.

” Dr Caplan said.

DJ has two children and a third is coming, with the family saying they’re unsure how they’re going to proceed. They’re considering having him transferred, but he may not be strong enough for the move.

“We are aggressively pursuing all options, but we are running out of time,” Mr Ferguson said.

The family has said that DJ has been given great care at the hospital but that they don’t agree with the vaccination policy.

“I think my boy is fighting pretty damn courageously and he has integrity and principles he really believes in and that makes me respect him all the more,” Mr Ferguson added.

“It’s his body. It’s his choice,” he said.
