The ventilator is is only supposed to be used when you are unconscious. If you're awake, and not used to something like a CPAP (The concept of air being forced into your airway to assist in your breathing), you're body will attempt to reject it due to discomfort. You might go into initial shock, but it won't "kill" you.
What's "killing" people is the progression of the virus and being unable to adapt to the symptoms.
