I've watched several videos by Dane Calloway. I heard him use a term that I'd never heard before. That term was "Niiji."
I looked it up, and here's what the term represents:
"Niiji defines a person as an aboriginal from Turtle Island/North America, other than Inuit. Niiji has already replaced the term Indian in many cases among Native youth and elders and it could completely replace the term Indian just like the word Eskimo was replaced by name Inuit. Natives from Turtle Island call themselves "Niiji" regardless of what (tribal) nation they are from."

My first cousin is doing research on our ancestry, and they found out that one of our Great-Grandfathers appeared on the Oklahoma and Indian Territory Census Roll 1851-1959 (under the Choctow Nation). It was always rumored that my family had land in Louisiana that "somehow" disappeared.
Well, we found out that our Great-Grandfather was the person who had this land. It was 160 acres. We're currently trying to find out if he sold the land, if he was swindled out of it, or if it was taken by the government.
If any of you have been through this, or down this road; any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Have you spoken to the Jena Band of Choctaw Indians? They are the ones who run Choctaw business in Louisiana.
There are three main Choctaw tribes now: Choctaw Nation of Oklahoma, Mississippi Band of Choctaw Indians (of which I am descended from on my mother's side), and the Jena Band in Louisiana. And that is not to mention the other surrounding tribes that also speak Choctaw.
My uncle actually can still speak Choctaw (he is Atakapa, though, but they speak Choctaw), and he has taught me some Choctaw (mostly the curse words).
Also, you have enough proof to get you officially registered with one of these tribes, probably Jena. And you will need to get officially registered and get your tribal card if you want them to even think of taking you seriously. Trust me on this.

My uncle is texting the chief of his tribe to see if he may know something. He also says to check with the Bureau of Indian Affairs at bia.gov so they get your claim on record. That is a LOT of land, so they are not gonna give it up easy.

We're speculating that my G-G-Grandfather also gave his Louisiana land to my Great-Grandfather. That way, our family would have land in Louisiana and Oklahoma. We're trying to prove this now.
It's unraveling slowly, but we're staying on it.

Choctaw are often lighter skinned, but not white. Blackfoot are often darker skinned, but not black. Historic photographs are not difficult to find.
None of the actual Natives, with actual Native blood lines, appear Black nor White.
That being said, the indigenous of what is now Colombia do not look like the Indigenous of what is now New Brunswick.
Choctaw, and the rest of the so-called "5 civilized tribes" were called civilized because they took on the ways of the white man.
Choctaw (and others) were slave owners. They fought on the side of the confederacy in the Civil War.
Black people who claim Choctaw heritage most often are descendants of "freedmen", former slaves of the Choctaw.
For the purposes of the white man, lumping slaves together with actual tribal members was not a big deal.
Also, muddying the waters was to their advantage. If one has a tribal claim to land, one must prove tribal association.
I met an African American man who successfully attended school tuition free after proving his association with a tribe via the Dawes Roll. He was of African (and possibly European) descent. He was NOT native.
When considering the Dawes Rolls, it is essential to remember that it was written by the same white people who committed genocide against peoples from the tip of what is now Canada to the tip of what is now Chile. The source of this "Authority" must be viewed with at least a hint of skepticism.
Why are there so many seemingly white folks claiming Native heritage?
Some reasons to consider:
There is long association between the Choctaw and the Irish. If memory serves, it has something to do with the Choctaw sending food and other items to the Irish during the potato famine.
Also, many native tribes did not determine tribal membership via the blood quantum. In other words, if the tribe decided
you were one of them, you were one of them.
Some (original, pre-colonial) natives are relatively light skinned, like Samoans. Some are dark skinned, such as the Blackfoot. Some look like Asians.
None were white. None were black.
The Choctaw (those who can trace ancestry back before the invasion by Europeans) are NOT white people, and they are NOT black people.
They are natives, whose bloodlines have been diluted due to the results of colonialism, just like everybody else.

I cannot attest to the actual color or hue of my G-G-Grandfather or G-Grandfather because I've never laid eyes on them. But, I did see my G-Grandmother. She was Black for sure, but you can tell that she wasn't just Black ( as in the African sense). Her nose was not broad, and her hair was long but textured (thick). My wife used to say, "I wonder where you guys got your noses from?"
Anyway, I'm not relying on facial features and things of that sort even though there's small visual clues. We're actually trying to follow the "paper" trail. On the Dawes Roll (for my G-G-Grandfather) under Tribe, it say Choctaw; under Blood, it says Full. This corroborates what my fam was told at my G-Grandmothers funeral by our oldest relatives... I doubt that these relatives, being much older, even cared about the Dawes Roll etc... yet they're both saying the same thing.
For my family, it's a rabbit hole for sure. But, we'll continue to search for answers as long as we can... If something good comes out of it, great. If it leads to no where, that's fine as well. At the very minimum, we now know that we are connected to this land, and not just brought here. We were already here.
Good luck to you. One side of my family has a similar ancestry. The tragedy is that all interest of our ancestors apparently died with my father. He is the only one among his siblings, except for on aunt, who actually ever showed any interest in our true ancestry. I hope you fare better than I did.

Now, my paternal grandmother’s family was very old, many dead, by the time I was born. Her and I looked at photo albums every time I visited. Ancestors in full Indigenous American garb.
Now, my maternal great great grandfather had a white father, but hated white people. He had straight hair and blue eyes. I am under the impression his father raped my great, great grandmother for him to get here.
Anyway, my maternal grandmother’s family is fromTennessee. What I learned as I got older was they were basically mountain people, like Snuffy Smith. Before that I had never associated Blacks with mountain living.
I look African descended all day long, but European and indigenous blood running through my veins through and through.
I say that to say, I want all the money and benefits my heritage will affor me because America ain’t sh!t.

But, on my father's side, I'm supposed to have a G-G-Granddad who's supposed to be white from Ireland or Scotland (I'm inclined to believe Ireland). I remember my Grandfather calling him, "The White Boy." But, we haven't started researching that side of the family yet.
