Writer's Circle: Is it EASIER to write DRAMA or COMEDY?

I learned a lot from Quintin Tarantino. He basically takes regular conversations Im sure he has had and infuses them into his characters. I.E. Reservoir Dogs "Madonna Virgin" Debate. And Pulp Fiction " $5 milk shake".

They both could just be internal debates he had with with self, but if you take two or more people and give them the affirmative and negative of your own argument, you just gave them character development.

I hated writing fluff or Like I call it bullshit as well. I thought That his method was a great way of getting around it.

A great example in Black Drama Writing is on "Being Mary Jane".

Relate able topics, alot of them are just "dinner conversations" of today's issues.

Plus the show has stole the best elements from better shows. Which is a good thing iN its case since its on BET.
QT has a penchant for making movies about movies rather than subjects but I give him credit for having a flair for dialogue. What his characters talk about and HOW they talk about it is very distinctive. I think the key to tarantino dialogue is that what your hearing has a point and a purpose that plays out later. People copying his style miss that.

So even tho it seems like people in his stories are talking about bullshit or trivial things theyre actually setting up something that your going to see play out later on in someway.

For instance the Tony Rockyhorror scene in Pulp Fiction

Now we're just listening to two guys talking about a couple of people and the shit they do BUT theres subtle info in there..namely
its a story about a crime boss, his wife and how much of a short fuse he has about people who fuck around with his wife.

its later reinforced when we see those two at the bar in the Butch and Marcellus Wallace scene.

We HEAR marcellus but never see his face (tension builder) All we know is he is a big black man who clearly doesn't sound like he takes shit from anyone (REAL tension builder) which confirms the Tony Rockyhorror story to us..this guy seems like he'd throw someone off a balcony for petty reasons. Then there's Jules and the bartender laffing knowingly at the fact that Vince has to take his wife out.

All of this is kinda subconscious so when we get to the actual date the tension has been building for a while and we know what the stakes are. And the date goes TOO WELL..they have good conversation, dance well together and are bonding culminating to an awkward but ROMANTIC moment when it looks like they might KISS..we ALL feel the sexual tension in the room and Vince is so nervous he has to rehearse a speech in the bathroom just to figure out a way to leave the house before something happens.

So when we see that she's overdosed on his shit and is dying we're literally on the edge of our seats because if marcellus wallace damn near killed someone for giving his wife a foot massage then lord only knows what he'll do if she DIES.

Thats where Tarantino excels..most of the time.

I've written both drama and comedy. I find it easier to write comedy though. For thise thats been on the board for a couple years may remeber a webseries I did back in 2010/2011. That was the first thing I ever wrote with absolutely no training or experience whatsoever. Its hard for me to watch now, but I still feel proud that I was able to take those words from page to screen. It was my first attempt at comedy. I'll have to say after 6 years, I've gotten much better.

I'd have attribute it to being an actor and able to work on many shows (mostly comedies). My writing partner and I are currently working on a single cam pilot we plan to pitch to cable in the coming months.I've learned a great deal from her as she actually has a degree in creative writing. To get the fundamentals of storetelling down has been invaluable.

I'm in the process of writing a novel which I hope will make period I would say drama is easier because you can capture emotions, which is more universal than comedy which is subjective.

Drama is way easier.

I wrote a funny story in my college creative writing class and read it aloud. Nobody cared about any of the jokes, but got a full on belly laugh from a part I never expected to be funny.

That said, even in the BGOL contests I'm always surprised at the reasons people like my stories. Either it's because of tension I didn't mean to build or a sudden plot twist that seemed pretty straightforward when I wrote it.

I guess the main thing is to keep people engaged. Nobody laughs in their sleep.

I think it’s easier to write drama comedy is subjective.

I forgot where I got the advice on writing comedy but it was to write the story straight forward as a drama then go back and find situations to hang jokes on.

With that said much of Hollywood movies use a lot of physical comedy anyway so writing a comedy shouldn’t be too much more of a challenge than writing a drama. Writing the movie you want to see write the comedy you want to see others just may find it funny.

I found writing dramatic dialog difficult because I'm always the person that has to lighten the mood. I've been working on channeling how I really feel and putting that to paper instead of trying to make the joke.

This is truth. I wrote a 18 page paper on Nintendo for my marketing class, and I read and re-read the paper multiple times, then I needed a fresh set of eyes. I sent a copy to my friend that is a teacher and I sent one to my mother who is the most educated black woman on the planet. They found so man grammatical errors that I was reading through.

Agreed.

Drama is easier because humans relate easier to pain, struggle, hardships, etc..

Comedy is hit or miss because humor for the most part is cultural and location related so what you find funny may not be largely funny if at all.
