That’s exactly what Dumars did. Took a gamble on an unproven Euro CAC when it wasn’t necessary. Dirk had all the GMs looking for the next great euro hope.
You know you never think about it until after the fact....but damn what was all them dudes name? I believe that's the worst draft pick of all time because that was one of the most top-heavy drafts ever with sure things. Melo was a SURE THING. He dominated in college like he was playing against little boys and was a complete player. Add Melo and it's likely a dynasty. Dumars ruined the franchise with that shit.
and imagine how that would have changed Melo's legacy. He would have been the first person out of that class with a Title... from NCAA champ to NBA champ in the very next year.

Like you look at Lebron film and look at Darko....that shit was trash....and he barely had any film at that.
I was not passing up Melo for him. Not in a million years I don't care if he went on to be the next Dirk or whatever they thought he was........

Lebron’s legacy would have been VASTLY different.
he would have dealt with Melo on a regular basis in the playoffs. Instead, Melo went to an incredibly stacked western conference where Denver wasn’t sniffing no championship hopes.

I didn't think anyone would buy it. I just figured the right thing would be done and we could take Melo. I literally almost collapsed when we selected Darko. I was mad AF. I almost think that the owner forced Dumars to do that. How could you watch Melo and not take him at #2?
People always say that about Coach Brown, but there were times that the Pistons just couldn't generate offense. He would have been on the court. The next season against the Spurs, the problem was we'd go long spurts without being able to generate offense. I think Melo's game with the Pistons' unique needs would have made it very difficult not to play him a lot.
They would have easily won back to back with Melo. That year against the Spurs in the Finals.. the main issue was we couldn't generate offense. We had two games in the 2005 NBA finals where we scored 74 and 76 points. Melo would have elevated that entire offense.
McDyess was getting 25 minutes a game. There is no argument for Melo not getting minutes. He'd gotten McDyess' minutes and eaten into Prince's time and Rasheed. Melo would have gotten starter minutes.
I think he would have come off the bench in year 1 and started in year 2. I knew Lebron would go #1, but it almost felt like we had a #1 pick because Melo was THAT damn good. Man he absolutely destroyed the NCAA that year. Man.. I thought we'd finally got lucky.. a championship team and about to add MELO! they picked that white boy and I was madder than a muthafucka.... the basketball gods bless you.. it's the easier #2 pick in history.... you don't pass on Melo. He was about as sure of a thing as you get when it comes to draft picks. Only could have kept him from becoming an instant allstar.... when getting "cute" goes wrong.
