Leave it to the Sopranos prequel to keep it all in the family: Michael Gandolfini, the son of late Sopranos star James Gandolfini, will play a young version of Tony Soprano in the upcoming film, according to our sister site Deadline.

The prequel, titled The Many Saints of Newark, is set during the Newark riots of the 1960s, and centers on Tony’s uncle Dickie Moltisanti, to be played by Doll & Em‘s Alessandro Nivola. Jon Bernthal (The Walking Dead), Vera Farmiga (Bates Motel), Corey Stoll (House of Cards) and Billy Magnussen (Maniac) have also signed on to join the cast, but their roles haven’t been revealed yet. Plot details are scarce as well, but the movie is expected to feature younger versions of a number of familiar Sopranos characters.

Michael Gandolfini is an actor in his own right, appearing in five episodes of HBO’s The Deuce last year. He steps into the role inhabited by his father James Gandolfini, who won three Emmys as mob boss Tony Soprano during The Sopranos‘ original HBO run from 1999 to 2007. (The elder Gandolfini passed away suddenly in 2013.)

Sopranos creator David Chase penned the script for The Many Saints of Newark, with Emmy-winning director Alan Taylor — who directed nine episodes of The Sopranos — tapped to helm the film.

In Newark you could not go to the north section, if you were black. The Italians would patrol the streets like a lynch mob. This was common in the 60s 70s and early 80s. After the Newark riots they all moved to East Hanover NJ.

Imperial was a big racist Italian thug those days. He and Baraka kept beef. I still remember as a kid seeing all the teenage Italians parked Iroc Z28 on the main road lined up.

I am wondering if this will be the narrative if so FUCK THE SOPRANOS PREQUEL

The show always touched on how racist those Italians were, especially Tony, so I'm sure this won't be ignored.

Italians they are still powerful in Newark politics they won't ignore it. They might even normalize the divisiveness by adding a black character....but with silent power in the background. That North Newark Italian area is now predominantly Hispanic.

The return of Tony Soprano will be delayed a bit longer.

Warner Bros. has postponed the release of the upcoming Sopranos prequel film The Many Saints of Newark from March to Sept. 24, 2021. The film was originally scheduled for release in September 2020 but delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

This new release date, however, is likely not due to the current pandemic surge, as Warner Bros. plans to release all its 2021 films in theaters and on HBO Max simultaneously to prevent further delays. Sources close to the production told Variety that the change is intended to allow Many Saints to premiere on the fall film festival circuit and to better position it for an awards season campaign.

Co-written by The Sopranos creator David Chase and helmed by frequent series director Alan Taylor, The Many Saints of Newark is set against the backdrop of the 1967 riots in Newark, N.J., the result of flaring tensions between the city's Black and Italian residents. Alessandro Nivola will star in the lead role of Dickie Moltisanti (Christopher's father), with James Gandolfini's son Michael taking on the role of Tony. The cast also includes Leslie Odom Jr., Jon Bernthal, Ray Liotta, and Vera Farmiga.

"I have really high hopes about the film," Nivola previously told EW. "What David did was to tell an origin story of Tony Soprano through a character that was dead before the series and that is such a surprising way of going about it. And the late '60s mob movie is the stuff of dreams. Everyone was at the top of their game. The only infuriating thing is how long we have to wait."

Hello, Governor Phil Murphy, your New Jersey constituents are awaiting a federal holiday so we can work through all of our emotions. In the first trailer for The Many Saints of Newark, the wildly anticipated, ’60s-set prequel film to David Chase’s The Sopranos, a young Tony Soprano (played by James Gandolfini’s son, Michael) is a floundering high schooler with a proclivity for violence who would still rather sit in his room and listen to records than learn more about (1) What the mob is, and (2) What the mob does. However, Tony’s uncle Dickie Moltisanti (Alessandro Nivola) sees his potential and begins mentoring him in all aspects of the mafia familia life, which becomes more and more appealing when Tony realizes he can get free fancy speakers for a good day’s work. And who needs college when you’re an audiophile on a capo fast-track? Also starring Leslie Odom Jr., Jon Bernthal, Corey Stoll, Billy Magnussen, Ray Liotta, and Vera Farmiga, The Many Saints of Newark will be released in theaters and HBO Max on October 1.

he has that same smug look in his eyes. all he has to do is get fat, work on his accent, and be a dick like his dad was in the sopranos lol

It'll be interesting to see how well his role and performance is received. Especially with how iconic a performance it was back in the day on the series.

Must have been emotional and cathartic, in a way, for his son too.

He was the one (as a teenager) who found his dad just prior to his death 8 years ago as of last week (June 2013). Here's the write-up on Wiki -

Gandolfini died suddenly at the age of 51 in Rome on June 19, 2013.[89] He was expected to travel to Sicily a few days later to receive an award at the Taormina Film Fest.[90] After he and his family had spent the day sightseeing in the sweltering heat, his 14-year-old son Michael discovered him unconscious at around 10 p.m. on the bathroom floor at the Boscolo Exedra Hotel.[91] Michael called reception, who in turn called emergency paramedics.[92] Gandolfini arrived at the hospital at 10:40 p.m. and was pronounced dead 20 minutes later.[93] An autopsy confirmed that he had died of a heart attack.[94]

While word of his death spread, state and national politicians took to the internet to pay tribute to Gandolfini.[95][96][97] Governor Chris Christie ordered all New Jersey State buildings to fly flags at half staff on June 24 to honor Gandolfini when his body was returned to the United States.[98] The day after Gandolfini's death, Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band, which has long featured Sopranos co-star Steven Van Zandt on guitar, dedicated a performance of their classic album Born to Run by doing a rendition for Gandolfini.[99]

Gandolfini's body was returned to the United States on June 23.[100] Family spokesman Michael Kobold thanked both Italian and American authorities for expediting the repatriation process, which normally takes seven days.[101] The marquee lights of Broadway theaters were dimmed on the night of June 26 in Gandolfini's honor.[102] Gandolfini's funeral service was held on June 27, 2013, at the Cathedral of St. John the Divine in Morningside Heights, Manhattan, New York City.[103] He was cremated, with his ashes given to his family.[104]

The fact of the matter, there are three in my opinion, the writers were not good writers. Yes they couldn't take existing works and pretty them up to make them fit into the jigsaw puzzle in a very amazing way

But they could not create. They were not good writers because they could not create from nothing. When George RR Martin got popular, got some pussy and stopped writing the source material, they were no longer able to mold The Source material to fit the screen and it went downhill from there

The second issue was the cast. The cast had gotten popular and they had offers to do more things but we're trapped in their HBO contract. Or, they were sick of doing Game of Thrones in general

Thirdly, HBO was cheap and did not want to pay the actors for two more seasons so they forced four seasons into 2 shortened seasons

Yes the show was expensive to make, but some executive somewhere couldn't care less about the last 2 seasons being critically panned worldwide. They had made so much off of the series that they didn't care and simply tossed the crowd an apple core instead of a basket of fruit, not caring if the crowd revolted or not

Enough of glorifying a bunch or racist ass Italians who have always referred to us as moulies, smokes, spear chuckers and monkeys. Amazing that any self respecting black person can't wait to sit in front of their tv and watch their denigration by others. If we don't have enough respect for ourselves how can we expect other races not to treat us with disdain. :smh:

Italians say dumb shit like this is why I don't respect the blacks because we took this or we took that. The Irish say the same shit. For them all it took was a change in their last name to assimilate.

For black people we couldn't just change our name from Rossetti to Rose and no one know that we're not black.

And on top of that, other racial groups like the Italians and the Irish joined in on the attempting to step on us every chance they got once they assimilated because stepping on black people was the thing to do.

Now we are so Rife with coons and undercover Coons that making true Headway is even more difficult now than it was before

I am so sick of prequels and sequels and rehashed ship fuck they act like all the stories that could possibly be told have been told. Non-creative motherfukers

I think this is gonna be a love letter to Tony.

And also i would bet good money this is an opportunity for Chase to somehow "fix" the controversial ending of Sopranos.
