Regina King, who most recently stepped behind the camera for One Night in Miami, has set a new onscreen role, playing pioneering politician Shirley Chisholm.

John Ridley will write and direct Shirley, which will be produced by Participant.

The project, which is expected to begin later this year, tracks the presidential campaign launched in 1972 by Chisholm, who was America’s first Black congresswoman. Her boundary-breaking campaign was marked by its youth engagement and her efforts to gain enough delegates to speak at the Democratic Convention.

(Chisholm was recently portrayed by Uzo Aduba in Hulu miniseries Mrs. America. Danai Gurira is attached to play Chisholm in another biopic titled The Fighting Shirley Chisholm from producer Stephanie Allain.)

Shirley filmmakers have an exclusive agreement with the Chisholm Estate, giving them access to her life story rights. King will also produce through her Royal Ties Productions with Regina King. Jeff Skoll and Anikah McLaren will executive produce.

“Shirley Chisholm’s fearless determination has been an inspiration to so many of us, and with this film we hope to inspire many generations to come,” said King, with Ridley adding, “Regina’s passion for bringing a complete and very human portrait of Shirley to life has been evident since literally the day we first met. I’m very thankful to both Regina and Reina for trusting me to partner in telling the story of this truly remarkable individual.”

Ridley and King previously worked together on the television series American Crime, which earned King two Emmy Awards.

Fuck Regina King and this movie. They shouldve got a Guyanese girl to play Shirley. The lil girl from Black Panther couldve played this.

As a show of support to our Caribbean family, we will boycott this movie just like we do all the ones starring a foreign bedwench or "post racial" immigrant playing one of our FBA icons. You wont see us promoting this at all. See we have home training, we not pirates. Its not about helping white people replace other groups for us.

But consistent.

Also, Shirley was born in Brooklyn. Raised in the US under a system of white supremacy and segregation which colored her experience and identity. Further, the film is being produced, run, written, and created by Americans in America. OP fails all around.

OP expects us to be tools of WS like him. We actually know how to tell White American males no and when they are doing something immoral. "Black Immigrants" simply dont, they have no history ever of pushing back at White Americans en masse on any level.

We are ADOS we got so many legends and icons we don't have leech to portray others. We have plenty of our own to choose from that we can play, thats why I say we different. The reason they so obsessed with playing our icons is they simply dont have many of their own in the Caribbean and Africa that affected the world like ours that people want to see. Deep down they know this, so they demand to be ours. Its an envy we simply dont have.
