Joe Biden is now POTUS

Do you understand that if the dems win the president, the senate, and keep control of the house that they will have only two years to do things?
There is no guarantee that the dems will maintain control of the house.
People are angry, upset, etc....and they see how the republicans have be going about things. The people want the dems to grow balls and stop being gentle men and women. No they want them to push forward and not sit back like everything is ok. Whether you and others thing so or not this is a watershed elections where people who aren't Republicans want radical change in how dems operate. So forst point of order should be evening out the court or we will have a conservative court overruling dems on any progress. Can't have republicans in power anywhere.

Its hard to say how this will play out. I think the new court will actually have to do something like end Obamacare or overturn Roe for the independents and swing voters not to take it out on dems or sit out come midterms for expanding the court. If they see it as just a power grab, dems might not have the support to keep power.

I mean, this isn't even remotely shocking. What's going to suck is if he's behind that night (which is the most likely scenario), and we have to listen to him whine and groan about how unfair the system is for days while the final counts come in.

Man, I want this dude convincingly squashed. Not just because it will mean something for the nation to have it be a definitive loss, but also because I have never wanted a human being to take a hard L as badly as I do this man. It's not an obsession; I just want him to take that medicine.

If Joe Biden is leading in polls by 7-12%, then why does Barack Obama have to campaign for him now?

A couple of reasons:
  • Dems are still pretty gun-shy from the polling errors of 2016. As I’ve written elsewhere, I think there are a lot of reasons why it’s unlikely that specific mistake will be repeated, but a lot of Democratic strategists are pretty clearly subtracting 5 or 6 points from every number they see, which makes it basically a tie. You work pretty hard when it’s a tie.
  • Relatedly, the structure of the Electoral College means that Biden actually has to get a lot more votes to win, so even a relatively minor polling error makes things actually pretty close. Account for uncertainty.
  • On the flip side, Biden is polling well enough that it looks like he might grab states that Democrats were not expecting, but just by a hair. Barack campaigning might be the margin in Iowa or Georgia. Why leave money on the table?
  • Along those lines, it actually now really looks like the Biden campaign is trying to juice the numbers for down ballot races: Kamala was just in McAllen, TX (US Senate, Texas House), and Joe has gone to Georgia and Iowa (3 senate seats between them). Democratic voters really like Barack Obama, so this is part of a strategy to get them fired up about Democrats generally.
  • Last but not least: My man is unemployed. What else is he going to be doing?

Ok, I guess.

Personally I think people want the dems to do it right away. The fact that they held up an Obama appointment and then decide to do a 360 on their resson for holding off the appointment. Then went ahead an appointed a republican to the Supreme Court just a week from an elction I believe is enough for myself and I believe many others. If the dems win big, then that is a mandate.

Fam, Trump and his nutcase hardcore believers will whine and bitch about how this election was "stolen" from him till the day he dies.

He'll be having hosts on his TV station (Trump TV is coming folks), swearing he was screwed for years and years.

This news about him "declaring victory" isn't new at all...it will support his narcissism and rile up his fans and will make him a shit ton of money via TV/Radio.

Honestly... Id prefer the scenario where he's getting his doors blown off and we gotta listen to him screech and scream like a dying rodent in the clutches of a feral cat.

Agreed. Im so sick of the Dems having to play by the rules while repubs do whatever they want, however they want. They need to understand that their fuckery will not go unaddressed and the consequences when they aren't in power are real.

There is actually an argument that the ONLY way to make the GOP slow down their bullshit is for the DEMS to fight back and make them pay politically. Why would the GOP change their ways if there is no penalty, for instance, for what they did with merrick garland and rbg. I read a long breakdown about how knowing you'll be penalized for breaking the rules has been one of the main checks on the GOP and once the DEMs abdicated that and leaned on "civility", the GOP increased their assault on norms because literally the DEMS were rewarding the GOP for their actions by doing NOTHING to make them pay a penalty for it. If the DEMS come back and wipe out a decade of McConnell's work in a few months, they'll think twice about the ramifications of breaking the rules/norms. I read a great article about this....didnt share it...been posting on election-related shit lately.

You can make the argument that the only way to save democracy is for the Dems to "rebalance" the courts.

You crush your opponents by winning the election. You show people the government works by providing the aid, relief, and regulation needed to save their lives.

Hopefully by that time you've created the structure you need to not only pack the court, but ensure that the nominees are qualified.

Do you realize you can't do most of the shit above without reorganizing the court? Every big DEM package will die in the courts. Dems can control the Presidency, House, and Senate and have their healhcare package deemed unconstitutional by the courts. The GOP plans to control the country through the judicial branch. Biden gets NOTHING major reformed without expanding the courts.

If neither party plays by the rules then the rules become meaningless. At that point the president can pretty much rule by decree and our democracy goes from being flawed to being non-existent.

Instead, Dems need to play by the rules and use their power to make the rules tighter and the country more secure.

This country is way too far gone for them to avenge rivalries.

I don't ascribe any magical electoral powers to Donald Trump. He's a racist man who says racist shit for the admiration of racist people. He's a pathological narcissist. In order for him to win, the polls would have to be 3X as wrong as they were 4 years ago. The polls have already been corrected so they favor him and he still is behind. There are no shy Trump voters. Why would anyone be afraid to tell an anonymous pollster their vote when 70% of the people of your race and social-economic class are voting for him?

If the polls are incorrect, I think the problem would lie in the way they're weighted. I don't buy the stereotypes of non-educated vs. educated white voters. I've worked with plenty of both. The thing that most discerned their voting preference was in the level of racism. Those that were the most racist, we're republican. They are the ones that want to stick their chests out and act tough. Didn't matter if they were college educated or not. If Trump wins it will be because America literally chose racism.

They could but it's a terrible idea.

For starters there's no real rush on fixing the electoral college system. They literally have years to do it.

second, how are you going to make fundamental changes to the supreme Court immediately after the last party destroyed everyone's confidence in democracy?

Dems need to win the Public's trust back first
you be on the whitest shit
Like I can read your shit without looking, get to the end, scroll back up thinking "I bet this his ass", and boom.

For real. A landslide victory for Dems IS winning back the public’s trust....

Under normal circumstances... Id agree... But the repubs pushed it entirely too far since Trump gave them cover and took away all forms of decency and the illusion of bipartisanship. Fuck that, ALL THAT. Since its about wielding and doing everything to maintain power.(Republicans are literally trying everything to steal this election and it aint just Trump.) Then that's what it is and what's the point of having rules if they only apply to 1 team??? If they win, assert their power. Close loopholes, make "norms" into rules and all that. But they won't get it done in 1 term... So... Play their game and do what needs to be done. Otherwise the cycle will continue. How does a party that can't win the popular vote stay in power for so long???

the real question is why does the president have so much power to begin with? For that matter, why does the supreme Court have so much power that when one of its members dies the whole country is left holding their breath thinking that democracy could crumble at any moment?

I think the first loophole that needs to be closed is to take away some of the president's power. For instance, make presidential pardons subject to approval by the house. Define when and under which circumstances a sitting president can be tried in criminal court. Make releasing tax forms a requirement of running for office. Codify the pandemic playbook into federal law, etc.

What if the legislative branch were to take some power away from the courts then?

Riddle me this???......... Which party has been the one to give the executive branch that much power??? All 3 branches are supposed to be equal... Or atleast thats what I was taught... Repubs stood in the way of Obama appointing judges, yet Trump appoints 3 and they straight strong armed the last one in there. As I keep reiterating... Its one party that thinks the rules dont apply to them, its fruitless for the Dems to govern any other way at this point. Standard rules of government no longer apply, so... They dont apply.

You know what I realized..Trump is to these people what Obama was to us when he was first elected..he can do no wrong..it's almost like they worship this dude..the sad part is, he cares nothing about them..he could spit on them and they would open their mouth to try and catch it..smh

What if the legislative branch were to take some power away from the courts then?

The only way to do that is by expanding the court. Literally, the solution to the problems you're proposing is court expansion or "reform". But you're more likely to just expand the number of judges than pass universal term limits etc for the federal court and SC.

This has been the GOPs goal for decades (control through the judicial branch). The demographics are moving against them... rather than appeal to a broader coalition they plan to exert minority rule through the judicial branch. Dems can rather easily break the GOP hold on the country in a number of ways that they must deploy if they plan to save democracy.

There is no way the dems can win all three branches and allow the GOP to control the country through a corruptly attained 6-3 far-right controlled Supreme Court.

Damn. SO we're gonna be clean over 100M before election day. That's crazy. I don't know how many states having voting tomorrow too. With all these ballots still coming in, is it out of the question that we could be at 110 votes before the polls open on Tuesday morning?

Well Sammy thank you very much for taking your trolling directly to my face instead of talking behind my back.

If neither party plays by the rules then the rules become meaningless.

This is what the GOP is counting on. Their counting on people like you proposing civility over justice. They've been getting away with that forever. They won't stop until it's clear that DEMS are going to demand JUSTICE and not civility. They don't expect Schumer to blow things up once he has control of the chamber. They think he's selling wolf tickets. They'd love nothing more than to focus on some type of bullshit court reform if it does not include court expansion. with a 6-3 conservative court with 3 very young new far right appointees, they'll effectively control the country regardless of who runs the house, senate, or presidency. These 4 years will have all been worth it to them if the Dems allow that to happen. They'll control the direction of the country for the next 40 years. Fuck that, the dems are getting support right now because the MAJORITY want the DEMS to reverse the GOP damage.

This is a case where the Dems can't be on that "we can't be like the GOP". They MUST user their power to restore equality in the judicial branch...otherwise, they need to just pack it up and go home. Biden winning won't mean shit.

Naw man. That shit isn't true. Obama stayed getting flamed even right here on BGOL. People liked Obama... he wasn't worshipped.
Obama could only dream of having Trump's base. 35% of the population would cheer Trump on if he was eating babies on Live TV.

I think yall really underestimate how much of a cult figure he is to his base. The GOP about to learn too because if Trump loses, he's gonna burn the GOP down too..watch... Trump only cares about himself.. he doesn't give a fuck about the GOP. You think this nigga gonna be on the campaign trail in 2024 supporting republican candidates if he's not on the ticket?! this dude gonna burn this shit down. This nigga was at a rally tonight flaming Amy Coney Barrett already!

If the rules don't apply then the laws don't apply either. At that point you no longer have a government you have a group of thugs enforcing their will through brute force.

You can't establish rules and law if you can just override or break them the moment they become inconvenient. It's bad enough that the Republicans do this, if the Democrats do it too this country is doomed.

How?

Dems really only unite when there is a common goal to be met that everyone can agree with. This time it was Trump. Last time it was Obama being the first black president after a war ridden and economic downfall from the Bush era. Same with Bush Sr.

Joe and Kamala are only temps and they have two years to undue what Trump has done before those house and senate seat are up for grabs again in 2022.

The Dems have to find some type of common ground among its voters. This is a party of many different group ls looking to see their group gain a benefit. When it’s not met, then they easily pull back.

Be on the lookout for AOC..she's being relatively quiet now for party unity but she will come for Joe and Kamala for not being leftist enough

I never said that they shouldn't expand the court. They absolutely should and if they take the House and Senate there's no rule that says they can't.

That said though, taking care of this pandemic is a far more important priority. I would even go as far as to say that it outweighs anything else happening in the government at this moment. Anything else would be like shampooing the carpet while the house is on fire.
