All excellent points. Let's get into this. The environment is much larger than the US. It will take a global effort to bring the world back from the brink. If the US adopted the most forward thinking stringent environmental regulations ever it would still be putting a band aid on a gunshot wound. The environmental battle is already lost. What we're doing these days after fires and storms is just perpetual cleanup.
The same can be said about a pandemic. It will take a global cooperative response to beat it. I think the states already know there's no one coming from the federal level and they have responded accordingly. Why not keep doing the same?
On November 2nd everyone that believes the world will end on November 4th if trump wins should be quitting their jobs and selling their homes right? Exactly. the environment may be a global effort, but the United States suffers far more natural disasters than most other countries do. The only way forward is to have a comprehensive response and a plan to stop new ones from happening. Trump has undermined both of these systems and will continue to do so if he's allowed to stay in office.
One of the biggest reasons that the United States response to covid-19 has been such a disaster is precisely because there's no help coming from the Federal government. Even worse, the federal government is fighting to take away people's healthcare in court, silencing medical experts from giving life-saving information, and threatened to defund States that don't open their economies fast enough. Trump even went so far as to encourage armed rebellion against state governments that enforce public safety orders.
The reason some fool in the oval office can't shatter a nation is because there are two other co-equal branches of the federal government. What happens when Trump controls all three? he's already about to have a two-thirds majority in the supreme court and as collaborated with Republican senators to block any Democratic judicial appointments.
The GOP has put in decades of painstaking work to hack democracy. Donald Trump has been their biggest asset in that cause. That's why our survival depends on getting rid of him

Trump doesn't have nearly enough followers to win an honest election. If he remains president for the next 4 years it will be because of court challenges, technicalities, and democracy hacks we haven't even figured out yet. Not because of the will of the people.
Great points as usual. I don't agree that US environmental policies will have any meaningful impact on natural disasters though. Hurricanes start in the south Atlantic. The biggest carbon emitters are the Chinese. We may have more natural disasters but the impacts are far less so the frequency doesn't matter.
You're right about the covid response. I just happen to find the opportunity in it. A lot of the idiots that put trump in office will take it in the face with such a weak response and I for one celebrate their removal. Herman Cain comes to mind. I think intelligent people recognize trump for the con man he is and I also believe intelligent people will get through this pandemic because they DO believe the science and are taking the protective measures to stay safe.
The system will correct itself. If the GOP gets all branches of government they will do what they always do and eventually an over correction will be put in place. They'll fuck up and the people will elect a clean up crew. If you step back and look at the history of the political system in this country you'll start to see that pattern over and over. There's nothing new to see here.

You're right about the hurricanes. Even if the green New deal were to be enacted in full tomorrow morning we would still have them. That's why we need federal leaders who can enact successful relief efforts that save as many lives and stop as much damage as possible.
Donald Trump has proven that he is not only incapable of doing this, but unwilling to even try unless it happens in a red or purple state.
As for stopping future damage, China is the world's biggest polluter, but most of that pollution comes from burning PETcoke. A highly toxic fuel that's also one of the United States biggest exports.
The idea that covid-19 is worse for people who put Trump in in power is a myth. Yes, it's the red States getting hit the hardest now, but it certainly wasn't that way in the beginning. Also, the worst affected places in most red States are blue cities and counties.
I certainly agree that a democratic system will eventually straighten itself out. The problem is that the American system has been getting steadily less democratic since the 1965 voting rights act. our votes mean less than ever before and if we don't get Trump out of office they won't mean anything at all.
