Jussie Smollett Reemerges From His Own Personal Quarantine

Well, well, well, look who it is. While most people are retreating from the public, former Empire actor Jussie Smollett decided to reemerge. The 37-year-old all but disappeared in the year since Chicago police accused him of paying two brothers to stage a racist and homophobic hate crime against him on January 29, 2019. He deleted his Twitter, Empire moved on, and his last Instagram post was from June 2019. Until today. The actor (and singer) revived his Instagram account to serenade us with a song about perseverance, ’cause, you know, the coronavirus.
“Quarantine Day 421,” he captioned it. “Hope y’all are staying safe. Spread love and kindness … not Rona.” Day 421? What did Jussie Smollett know that the rest of us didn’t know? Actually, March 25 is 421 days exactly since January 29, 2019, the date of the incident in question. Not exactly sure what definition of “quarantine” he’s going for, but, to be fair, we’re all playing fast and loose with that one lately. Smollett is just another in a long list of celebrities who believe the power of music will aid in the fight against a global pandemic. (It unfortunately won’t.) On February 24, Smollett used his pipes to plead not guilty to six counts of disorderly conduct in a new criminal case tied to the incident. Needless to say, 2020 has a lot going on.

It appears like Empire's reign will end early.
The hit Fox music drama was supposed to have five more episodes to go in its final season, but like nearly every TV series and film, production was shut down due to the coronavirus breakout. While the fate of season and series finale for other shows is still up in the air, it now appears that Empire's is sealed. A promo teasing next Tuesday's milestone 100th episode is advertising this as the beginning of "the shocking final three episodes of Empire."
That would mean that Empire's end is being cut short, and that they will not get to film their planned series finale. Deadline reports that footage from what would have been the 19th episode, which production was halted on during this pandemic, will be weaved into episode 18 to make it better serve as the final installment.
Fox declined comment.
It remains to be determined if fans will get the resolution to some of the season's mysteries, including the flash-forwards of Lucious (Terrence Howard) being shot and Cookie's (Taraji P. Henson) car being blown up.

Jurnee Smollett has spoken out for the first time about the ongoing scandal surrounding her brother Jussie Smollett.
In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, the actress made her first public comments on the controversy, which exploded last year when Jussie was accused of staging a hate crime against himself. The Empire star, who has maintained his innocence throughout the case, was dropped from the Fox show as a result of the scandal.
"It's been f---ing painful," Jurnee Smollett told THR, "one of the most painful things my family's ever experienced — to love someone as much as we love my brother, and to watch someone who you love that much go through something like this, that is so public, has been devastating." She also defended Jussie's innocence, adding, "Everyone who knows me knows that I love my brother and I believe my brother."
The case has been a long and complicated one, beginning in January 2019, when Smollett told police that two men attacked him while yelling racial and homophobic slurs. Prosecutors later charged Smollett with filing a false police report before abruptly dropping the charges in March 2019. In February, however, Smollett was indicted again on similar charges, alleging he made "four separate false reports to Chicago Police Department officers related to his false claims that he was the victim of a hate crime."
"I have been truthful and consistent on every single level since day one," Smollett said after the charges were dropped. "I would not be my mother’s son if I was capable of one drop of what I have been accused of.”
Jurnee Smollett said her brother, who has been largely out of the public eye of late, has been "staying creative, as creatives do" and briefly moved in with her following her divorce earlier this year. "I look at him sometimes and I'm like, 'He's so strong,'" she added.
The Smollett family has also stood by Jussie throughout the scandal, calling him "an innocent man whose name and character has been unjustly smeared" in a statement after the charges were dropped. "Jussie is a son, a brother, a partner, a champion for human rights, and a genuine soul who would never be capable of what he was falsely accused of," they continued. "We look forward to bringing the real perpetrators to justice."
