Charles Booker, black challenger to Mitch McConnell catching fire in Kentucky

There's a great black candidate running against Mitch McConnell with a primary election on June 23.

He has raised $600,000 in the last couple of days, over a million overall. But his opponent, a conservative white Democrat, is backed by Chuck Schumer and the Democratic establishment.

I’m a young Black man from the South, born to parents who both dropped out of high school. All my life I’ve been told by people where I belong, what I’m able to accomplish, and how ambitious I’m allowed to be. But no matter what anyone tells us please remember this unwavering truth: we deserve better.

Our friends, cousins, and neighbors keep losing their lives to senseless violence.

I am the Real Democrat in this race, who has worked alongside teachers, workers, miners, justice advocates, young people & students, and people of all political ideologies to make our state a better place. I have the backing of Kentucky’s leaders -- in the form of 17 members of the House of Representatives, the entire Black Legislative Caucus, and the full power of Kentuckians for the Commonwealth, our state’s leading grassroots organization.

I am running not only to unseat Mitch McConnell, which will damn near save the country in itself, but also to take us on a path to building a better future for ourselves and our children. That means we must end generational poverty. My push for structural change includes Universal Basic Income, a Green New Deal, and Medicare for All. For example, I’m fully in support of Medicare for All, because no one should have to die because they don’t have money in their pocket.

But I can’t do it alone. I always say that I am not the alternative to Mitch McConnell. WE ARE.

I sent the brother and Amy $50 each. You can't buy yard signs with best wishes.

I'd encourage people not to give her money unless she wins the primary-- She's obviously better than Trump but she'd be one of the worst Democrats in the senate if elected, whereas Booker would be the first black senator worth a shit since Obama. The white female conservative Democrat approach vs Mitch failed in 2014 with Alison Lundergan Grimes-- I hope Booker gets a shot.

Thanks. You caught me in time

Yeah, this young brother is doing his thing. During the 2018 election I watched him wipe the floor with a lot of established Black pols that were going for the state representative spot that he eventually won.

When he first announced he was going after Mitch, I thought it was a bit early in his political career, but sometimes the moment comes even when you're not ready. His democratic primary opponents are looking way out of touch with the new reality and events over the past 5 months.

Rumble Young Man Rumble!

If a progressive can win in Kentucky, it would mean an absolute wipeout for the GOP in November. Remember, it's Kentucky.

Biden might win by double digits and McConnell is less popular than Trump in the state. It isn't the likely outcome but it isn't terribly unlikely at this point.

Do you live in or near his district?

Asking because it is very uncommon for state senate candidates to pop up on anybody's radar.

Yes I live in Louisville but not in his specific district. In 2018 I had a family member and some close friends running for elected office and I heard Booker speak along with his opponents at a couple of debates. I can't say I know him personally, but people I trust say he's the real deal.

I am conflicted.
Kentucky will be a tough state to flip and there is an outside chance the Senate and Presidency can be flipped.

I see the benefit of an electing a progressive young black man, but can a progressive young black really win a senate seat in Kentucky? Does it more make sense to try to appeal to moderates and Mitch haters that might be willing to vote for a generic Democrat?

Sigh... They picked a black man to beat Mitch in KENTUCKY?......

You have to understand the Kentucky only has 2 major population centers (Louisville and Lexington make up 1 million people) This is also where the overwhelming percentage of democratic (and Black) voters are. Outside of these two areas you basically have a lot of small towns with an average of like 20k or less. So long story short, the democratic strongholds have 1/4th of the population of the state. If Louisville and Lexington show up in Novenmber with big numbers its a wrap for Bitch ass Mitch

This is how the Dems were able to win the Governor in 2019 (from a very unpopular Trump loving Republican).

It CAN happen, but he has to win the primary first.
