We'll see how this plays out. Our union (BCGEU) will update us in the future.

BCGEU calls for expansion of B.C.’s pandemic pay program for essential workers

THE B.C. Government and Services Employees’ Union (BCGEU) is calling on Victoria to expand the federal-provincial cost-shared pandemic pay program to temporarily top up the wages of some essential workers to cover more essential frontline workers.

“The BCGEU pushed hard for this program to cover the broadest possible range of essential works and, as a result, B.C.’s program is significantly more inclusive than those in other provinces,” said Stephanie Smith, President of the BCGEU. “We’re happy that some of our lowest-wage members doing some of the highest-risk frontline jobs will be eligible. But the bottom line for us is that all frontline essential workers are shouldering an incredible burden in terms of increased cost, stress and inconvenience as well as increased risks to their emotional and physical health. All of these workers deserve recognition—not just some of them.”

Under the program, which was first announced by the federal government in mid-April, tens of thousands of BCGEU members will be eligible for a lump-sum payment calculated at $4 per straight-time hour retroactive to March 15, 2020. BCGEU members covered by the program include those providing vital services to the province’s most vulnerable citizens like corrections officers, social workers, employment assistance workers, and those who work in health care and social services.

However, thousands more BCGEU members have been left out of the program including those in public liquor and cannabis stores and warehouses, maintaining supply chains for the restaurant industry as well as a critical revenue stream for the government during the pandemic.

“From the moment this funding was announced by the federal government, our goal as a union was to make sure B.C.’s program covered the broadest possible swath of frontline essential workers,” said Smith. “And our goal hasn’t changed. This kind of patchwork recognition creates arbitrary divisions at a moment when unity and solidarity among workers is more important than ever. We’re grateful for those who are covered, but we will keep fighting for those who aren’t.”

In addition to pushing for broader eligibility for the program, the BCGEU is continuing to work with partners in the labour movement and the social justice community on leveraging the lessons of the pandemic to improve the lives of working people with a focus on issues like family-supporting wages, universal child care, and enhanced workplace safety—including paid sick leave.

I just had someone I know say that he had some guy try to pull his mask off at the gas station. Dude backled off after he shoved him into a gas pump, but what the hell? If you don't want to wear a mask, that's fine, but why do you have to be an asshole to people that do? Shit like that is exactly why all of these people's "freedom" talk is complete bullshit.

Cuba credits two drugs with slashing coronavirus death toll

HAVANA (Reuters) - Communist-run Cuba said this week that use of two drugs produced by its biotech industry that reduce hyper-inflammation in seriously ill COVID-19 patients has sharply curbed its coronavirus-related death toll.

Health authorities have reported just two virus-related deaths over the past nine days among more than 200 active cases on the Caribbean’s largest island, a sign they may have the worst of the outbreak under control.

The government, which hopes to increase its biopharmaceutical exports, has touted various drugs it produces for helping prevent infection with the new coronavirus and treating the COVID-19 disease it causes.

It ascribes the recent reduction in deaths of severely ill COVID-19 patients largely to the use beginning in April of two drugs that appear to help calm the “cytokine storm,” a dangerous overresponse by the immune system in which it attacks healthy tissue as well as the invading virus.

One is itolizumab, a monoclonal antibody produced in Cuba and elsewhere. The other is a peptide that Cuba says its biotech industry discovered and has been testing for rheumatoid arthritis in Phase II clinical trials.

“Some 80 percent of patients who end up in critical condition are dying. In Cuba, with the use of these drugs, 80 percent of those who end up in critical or serious condition are being saved,” President Miguel Diaz-Canel said on Thursday in a meeting shown on state television.

Scientists caution that large placebo-controlled studies are needed to assess the safety and efficacy of these drugs for treating COVID-19.
But Cuba’s experimental treatments have helped it achieve an overall COVID-19 death rate of 4.2%, compared with the regional and global averages of 5.9% and 6.6%, respectively, health authorities say.

Fatality rates depend on many variables, including the rate of testing, quality of healthcare systems, and age and underlying health condition of the population.

Official data suggests that Cuba, with universal healthcare and a well-staffed care system, has done well in containing its outbreak. It has registered less than 20 cases per day over the past week, down from a peak of 50 to 60 in mid-April. In total, Cuba has reported 1,916 cases for a population of 11 million and 81 death.

That translates to an infection rate 0.71 per 100,000 inhabitants, compared with about 29 per 100,000 for the United States, according to a John’s Hopkins University tally.

Swift action helped Cuba contain its outbreak. After closing borders, schools and public transportation in March, Cuba urged residents to stay home, made wearing of masks obligatory, and employed effective contact tracing to curb the virus spread.

Agreed. Completely uncalled for. What’s troubling too is how quickly things can escalate. As evidenced in recent months with people fighting over toilet paper, hand sanitizer and water. As opposed to making a phone call or two and asking stores when they expect to reorder or restock their more in-demand items. It shouldn’t come to grabbing someone safely wearing a mask, or punching someone for paper towels.

Interesting. Visited Havana 6 years ago this past week. It was quite the experience.

That shit is going to get ugly. :smh: No forbearance for renters and most got until the 5th and then management can stick the eviction notice on their door. Meanwhile, UE playing with folks.

Damn I feel for these people. Congress bullshitting with pissing contests and bloated bills when people need bread.
Don’t start this with Congress you know who don’t want the second Stimulus and they want to hurry up and open up the country regardless what the virus does.....yeah the Republicans.

Do tell. How big would a bill have to be to get direct payments into the hands of Americans AND to extend $600? How many pages?

You don't send 1800 pages of fluff if you're serious about focusing the argument on direct relief. You ain't learn shit from the corporation eating big just 2 months ago? Folks ain't got time to see millionaires purposefully argue. :smh:

It's flu season in Brazil. That's one of my fears. That this thing will give a false sense of win to the U.S. since it's summer. Flu season hits us late October. These clowns will probably have schools open instead of using online learning.

Listen the new bill that the Democrats Put together in the us house Is mostly geared towards people not corporations but this is why the Republicans in the Senate a slow walking this bill if it was for the corporations they would have passed a bill.

Agreed. Cold and flu season will be very telling. Especially with how harsh it can be, combined with how challenging 2020’s already been this spring in North America ... in decent weather. It will certainly be a real, additional eye-opener.

This is the same mistakes that was done during the Spanish flu back in the early 1900s we are making the same mistakes again good luck everyone I don’t like the way this is going

Man, it don't take 1800 pages to issue direct payments to the people. You see how they botched up last time without creditor protection? It would take a paragraph like they did for offsets.

Out the 3 trillion, only 600 billion or so is directly to Americans. :hmm:Check how much the Americans got last time.:hmm::hmm:

They could have done a direct bill for the people and then come with their states/trickle down shit in the next version. But hey, if people who need the money put up with it, that's on them. Shit should be infuriating. Dems could have put the republicans on the spot with a direct bill. Instead, they give them outs. :smh:

I think we are lucking up because of timing. About to be 80s here and the days are long in NE Ohio as we open up. What's it like in Canada? You guys locked down or opening up like us?

How the people been responding? In my neck of the woods, it was business as usual even during the lockdown. People really going to go hard now that it's warm. :smh:

Yeah man.

I feel like we are in the eye of the hurricane. Folks going to be beating their chests since death rates haven't spiked. Football going to start.

Then we get out the eye. By the time early November hits, shit might get ugly.

I may disagree with you on politics little bit sometimes but that is a good analogy right there

Because of some of the laws in this country you have to put down a lot of words you can’t just put two words on the paper and call it a bill come on now you should know better
