Dana White: Secured U.S. location, private island for UFC fights

LAS VEGAS -- UFC president Dana White is so committed to resuming operations in the midst of the global coronavirus pandemic, he has secured a private island to host events.
White told ESPN on Monday that he has secured a location in the U.S. to host UFC 249 on April 18, which will be headlined by an interim title fight between Tony Ferguson and Justin Gaethje and consist of 12 fights overall. He said the location will host weekly fights for at least the next two months.

Additionally, White said he has started work on an undisclosed island, where he could conceivably book fights for international athletes who can't come into the U.S.
"I'll tell you this, I'm this close to getting a deal done," White said. "So this place where this fight is going to be on April 18 I have locked up for two months, so I'm going to continue to pump fights out. I also secured an island. I've got an island. The infrastructure is being built right now. We're going to do all of our international fights on this island.

"So when we do this fight April 18, international and in the United States, we're going to start cranking. The UFC will be back up and running, internationally and here in the States."

The UFC was forced to postpone three events, on March 21, March 28 and April 11, because of the coronavirus. Even as other leagues have remained shut down, White has been bullish that the UFC will resume operations by its next pay-per-view event, UFC 249, which airs on ESPN+.

That event was supposed to feature undefeated lightweight champion Khabib Nurmagomedov against Ferguson. However, Nurmagomedov was removed from the event when it became clear he would have trouble leaving his native Dagestan and reentering the U.S., where he had held some of his camp.

White has not disclosed the location of his venue in the U.S, and he said he has no plans of doing so. The fights will be held without a live audience.

"Health and safety is something we worry about all the time, not just during the coronavirus," White said. "Obviously, this has made our jobs a little tougher, but we're going to do everything above and beyond to make sure everybody is safe, just like we always do. A lot of things will be different."

Asked specifically whether all athletes will be tested for COVID-19, White declined to go into details, but he said the promotion has taken all necessary precautions.

"I'm ready to get back," White said. "You keep people in their houses for too long without entertainment, people are going to start losing their minds. And we need to start figuring out solutions. That's what we're doing. We're going to keep everyone safe, and we're going to pull this thing off."

There is no private island. Dana just said that to keep nosey reporters off his trail.

The fights are going to be on an Indian Reservation casino in California. He has that place booked for 2 months and wants to put on fights every weekend with no audience.

The US Government has no say so on what they do on the property and the California Athletic Commision does not have any authority over what happens on that land.

Should be fun.

Trump got on a conference call with all of the sports commissioners last week. It is telling that the only two that are still trying to do business (Dana and Vince) are Trump bootlickers. They will do everything in their power to make that orange bitch look good and try to return life back to normal.......regardless of whatever harm it might cause to their employees

With everyone in lockdown, if you could test every mofo at the event, fighters, trainers, media, etc etc, pay per view would be killer. No big parties where 10 people watch one $70 dollar fight, those ten people are buying 3 $70 dollar fights. Might be genius. As long as aint nobody being forced to fight fuck it?:dunno:

Them fighters better get a heavy bag

Fail....that mofo Dana, is money hungry and he could care less if the fighters get sick or catch the Coronavirus

I hope a lot of people get sick if he does it.

UFC 249 canceled after ESPN, Disney halt promotion's plans

LOS ANGELES (AP) — UFC 249 was canceled Thursday after ESPN and parent company Disney stopped UFC President Dana White's plan to keep fighting amid the coronavirus pandemic.

After defiantly vowing for weeks to maintain a regular schedule of fights while the rest of the sports world halted, White announced the decision to cease competition on ESPN, the UFC's broadcast partner.

UFC 249 was scheduled for April 18 on ESPN Plus pay-per-view, and White planned to follow it with weekly fight cards from Tachi Palace Hotel & Casino on tribal land in California's Central Valley.

White said he “got a call from the highest level you can go at Disney and the highest level of ESPN” asking him to cancel the shows. The UFC moved to ESPN in 2019 with a reported $1.5 billion deal.

White's frustration with the decision was obvious after he had repeatedly vowed to fight on amid mixed public opinion. The UFC boss still remained upbeat, vowing to be “the first sport back” after the pandemic eases.

“Our relationship and partnership with ESPN has been an incredible one,” White said. “The powers that be there asked me to stand down and not do this event next Saturday. We were ready to go, and ... Tachi Palace has had our back this whole time, has stood their ground and was willing to do this fight.”

White announced the cancellation shortly after U.S. Sen. Dianne Feinstein issued a statement urging the mixed martial arts promotion to reconsider its plan. A few hours earlier, former strawweight champion Rose Namajunas dropped out of her co-main event bout at UFC 249 after two deaths in her family related to the pandemic.

White never publicly disclosed the location of the upcoming fight cards until he announced their cancellation, likely to avoid the scrutiny that arrived shortly after the location was reported in MMA media over the weekend.

The UFC planned to stage the fights in an empty arena owned by the Santa Rosa Indian Community of the Tachi Yokut Tribe. Tribal land isn’t subject to the state government’s shelter-in-place order, and Tachi Palace has a long history of hosting combat sports events in Lemoore, California, about 40 miles south of Fresno..

“This event would involve dozens of individuals flying to California and driving to a casino for a purpose no one can honestly claim is essential,” Feinstein wrote. “At best this event ties up medical resources and sends a message that shelter-in-place orders can be flouted. At worst, participants and support staff could carry the virus back to their home communities and increase its spread.”

Although White's plan to keep his fighters employed was ultimately thwarted, he vowed to minimize the economic disruption of the pandemic for UFC fighters and employees. White and former owners Lorenzo and Frank Fertitta sold the UFC to Endeavor for an estimated $4 billion in 2016.
“All of my fighters that are under contract with me, I want them to feel safe,” White said. "Take time with your families and enjoy this time. Don’t worry about the financial part of this. You’re going to get the fights on your contract, and I’m going to make things right with the people who were willing to step up and fight next weekend. I’m going to take care of as many people as I possibly can.

White also addressed the UFC's employees: “Nobody is getting laid off at the UFC. Everybody is good.”

In an attempt to skirt federal and state guidelines during the coronavirus pandemic, the UFC plans to hold its April 18 pay-per-view event on tribal land in California, per multiple reports.
The state of play: Even as the rest of the sports world hits pause, UFC president Dana White has remained adamant that fights must go on, and appears to have settled for a shutdown casino in a state with the fourth-most confirmed cases of coronavirus.
  • That relentlessness could ultimately be a boon for business (UFC 249 will be available on ESPN+), but it also paints him as somewhat of a villain, willing to bend the rules and go to extreme lengths to ensure fighters can keep punching each other on camera and making him money.
The location: Tachi Palace Casino Resort, which is about 40 miles south of Fresno and sits on land belonging to the Tachi-Yokut tribe.
  • The loophole: By holding UFC 249 on tribal land, the UFC isn't subject to California's stay-at-home order and fights don't need to be sanctioned by the state's athletic commission, which has canceled all bouts through May 31.
  • The headliners: The event will feature 12 fights, headlined by the interim lightweight championship between Tony Ferguson and Justin Gaethje, who is replacing Khabib Nurmagomedov (unable to travel from Russia).
  • The island: White also claims he's secured a private island to stage events with international fighters who can't travel to the U.S.
The backdrop: The Association of Ringside Physicians has urged the suspension of all combat sports, which could impede the UFC's attempt to hire ringside doctors.
"Any combat sport taking place during this global pandemic places the athletes, officials, and anyone else involved in the event under unnecessary risk of infection .... In addition, combat sports athletes often require medical attention after a bout, and we do not wish to see any additional strain on an already overwhelmed medical system."

Damn... Dana just needs to sit his down somewhere and wait this shit out.

Post of the evening

He SHOULD become the face

throughout HISTORY as the dumbf*ck who put SPORT & MONEY over LIVES
My only issue is, where is the anger for the WWE. They just did the exact same thing a week ago.

I'm on the fence with this. As long as there is no audience and as long as everyone was able to be tested before the event and it was a closed arena, I was OK with it.

yeah I can't agree there.

I don't know if they tested before during or after

who gonna be around.

I just needed more details.

and I don't trust Vince as much as I don't trust Dana

but I feel like Vince been doing this like a dictatorship SO DAMN LONG?

I could see him controlling HIS people like that.

Dana is a fucking knuckledragging idiot who shouldnt be allowed to run anyones billion dollar organization. Hes been far too stubborn and asshole-ish on this matter from jump. I thought DIsney would step in and end this shit, especially after his latest interview on Get Up where he was an even bigger asshole than he normally is. He refused to discuss where the fights would be held, insisting that his show would go on regardless, and discounting any blow back as "political BS". Hes a horrible faceman for a company trying to sell itself to a mainstream audience.

Im glad they shut that shit down.

The biggest difference would be that Vince just needs the wrestlers and a skeleton crew. One UFC fighter will need at least 5 other folks with them. And the WWE can keep it in one building which they could sanitize daily and can film things ahead of time while checking everyone participating.

That's all Dana needs is a skeleton crew. The WWE has hair and make-up and a huge production staff. I bet if you put the number of people needed for both organizations to put on an event, it would be about the same number.

Dana said one big motivation was to keep his fighters fighting so they could get paid.

I still felt like he could have waited until at least the end of April though.

Dana is a lying bitch. He doesn't care about fighters. UFC was just bought from the Fertellias around two years ago. Thise same investors want a ROI on UFC no matter the cost. Dana is being pressured to put on shows to keep his job. No fights, no need for Dana to promote them which means no job to pay his high as bills.

If you are a fighter stupid enough to go against and opponents and Covid, then becmy guest. Don cry foul if you end up paying for it long term tho.

well damn

GREAT POINT.

What EXACTLY is the difference?

Disney has a rep to uphold as a family oriented entertainment company. They can't take that PR hit. Vince doesn't have that level of public scrutiny Neither cares about the health of the talent and staff, but Vince doesn't have to lie about it.
