Shawn Bryant knew he would be under quarantine for two weeks when he arrived in Taiwan from Daejeon, South Korea. The local police called every day and Bryant had told them he would be moving to a new Airbnb a few days into his stay. They said it was fine as long as he took a taxi.

So Bryant was alarmed when, in the taxi, he received a text warning that he had gone too far from his accommodation and would be fined if he didn’t return immediately. He quickly called his police contact, who assured Bryant he can just ignore the automated message.

“I’m glad they’re taking it very seriously and not letting people off the hook easily,” said Bryant, who is visiting Taiwan on his way back to Canada, his home country.

Using phone tracking to enforce mandatory quarantine is one example of how Taiwan has managed to contain the spread of coronavirus, with just 48 confirmed cases of infection to date, including one death. That’s despite the island located just 130km (80 miles) from mainland China, the centre of the virus outbreak which has reported more than 80,000 cases and 3,000 deaths.

As the UK, US, Italy, and other countries outside China struggle to cope with rising cases of the virus within their borders, many are taking note of Taiwan’s successes. Experts and officials say effective controls in Taiwan can be attributed to the use of technology, a central command centre, its single-payer healthcare system, and swift decision making.

Taiwan’s government was quick to implement border controls and it was one of the first to ban exports of surgical masks. Unlike in 2003, when severe acute respiratory syndrome (Sars) killed dozens of people in Taiwan after spreading from southern China, Taiwan has access to more advanced technologies this time around.

It was also on alert early due to its experience of the Sars epidemic. China was criticised for delays reporting to the World Health Organization (WHO) on Sars. “What we learned from Sars was that we need to be very sceptical with data from China,” said Chan Chang-chuan, dean of National Taiwan University’s College of Public Health. “We learned very harsh lessons then and that experience is something other countries don’t have.”

Conditions seemed heavy-handed at first, but now I believe they are wise decisions

Taiwan is not a member of the WHO because Beijing objects. China, which claims Taiwan is part of its territory even though Taiwan functions as a sovereign country with an independent, democratically elected government, blocks its membership of international organisations.

Since 2017, Taiwan has been barred from attending the annual World Health Assembly, an annual policy meeting, due to lobbying from Beijing. In the current outbreak, it has been excluded from WHO emergency meetings on the coronavirus.

Taiwanese experts were allowed to participate online in a WHO forum on Covid-19 on 12 February in their professional capacities. China’s foreign ministry said Beijing had given permission, while Taipei said China had nothing to do with it and that it was the result of direct negotiation with the WHO.

The issue has become an increasingly sore point for Taiwan amid the virus outbreak, with Taipei saying it is a big disadvantage for global health. Others, including Canadian prime minister Justin Trudeau and Japanese prime minister Shinzo Abe have called for the WHO to allow Taiwan to join.

“For us, receiving timely information is very important … Taiwan also needs to let WHO know that Taiwan can’t share our successful experiences if we can’t participate,” said Kolas Yotaka, spokeswoman for Taiwan’s cabinet. “We need to work together to end this nightmare.”

In Taiwan, most residents carry on as normal, with offices and schools open. Many restaurants, gyms, and cafes in the capital, Taipei, are still bustling, although most premises will take temperatures and spray hands with sanitiser before allowing customers in.

The government has been buying up all domestic mask production and rationing purchases to just three masks per person per week, causing queues outside pharmacies. It will enable online purchases this week.

“Everyone is really united at the moment and trust the government’s policies. They seemed heavy-handed at first, but now I believe they are wise decisions,” said Andy Chen, general manager of Taiwan Comfort Champ, a mask manufacturer that has been ordered to ramp up production.

Despite the sense of calm, Taiwanese officials are still on high alert. The health minister, Chen Shih-chung, said last week community transmission was unavoidable in the long run and Taiwan needed to be prepared.

Chan, from National Taiwan University, agrees more needs to be done, including more widespread and efficient testing for Covid-19. South Korea, a country of 51.8 million, conducts around 15,000 tests a day and has drive-through test centres. Taiwan, with a population of almost 24 million, currently conducts only around 800 screenings a day and not everyone under quarantine is tested.

There will be more and more confirmed cases as the US and other countries conduct more tests, Chan added.

For Bryant, who is temporarily in the country while en route to Canada, he is happy to wait out his quarantine. He is fine with authorities tracking his movement for now, but he expresses slight concern about the “big brother” implication. Taiwanese officials say it is legal, assuring that they are tracking individuals only during the period of mandatory quarantine.

“We are not using any advanced surveillance technology. It’s simply tracking based on their phone’s sim cards and their nearby base stations,” said cabinet spokeswoman Kolas.

“We want to protect the person as well as others in Taiwan,” she said. “To prevent more infections and fatalities, it’s a measure we have to take.”

All New York, New Jersey, and Connecticut Movie Theaters to Close Over Coronavirus

After the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention issued “density reduction guidelines” calling for an eight-week ban on gatherings of 50 or more people, several movie-theater chains responded by capping the number of tickets sold per screening and meticulously cleaning theaters in an attempt to stop the spread of the coronavirus pandemic. On Sunday evening, however, New York City mayor Bill de Blasio decided to call it, closing all movie theaters, nightclubs, and music venues as of Tuesday morning at 9:00 a.m., and restricting restaurants to delivery and takeout only.
“The virus can spread rapidly through the close interactions New Yorkers have in restaurants, bars and places where we sit close together. We have to break that cycle. Tomorrow, I will sign an Executive Order limiting restaurants, bars and cafes to food take-out and delivery,” he tweeted. “Nightclubs, movie theaters, small theater houses, and concert venues must all close. The order will go into effect Tuesday, March 17 at 9:00 AM.” “This is not a decision I make lightly,” wrote de Blasio. “These places are part of the heart and soul of our city. They are part of what it means to be a New Yorker. But our city is facing an unprecedented threat, and we must respond with a wartime mentality.”
Update, March 16: The ordinance has now reached three statewide levels. The governors of New York, New Jersey, and Connecticut announced that all movie theaters and concert venues will be closing in order to combat the spread of the coronavirus. This will take effect at 8 p.m. on March 16. Additionally, the three states will be requiring every restaurant, bar, and “nonessential business” to close, although restaurants will be allowed to continue operating with delivery or takeout orders.

Lin-Manuel Miranda’s Sing-Along Encourages You to Stay Home, Wash Your Hands and Dig Deep

America’s Dad, Lin-Manuel Miranda, has been doing his best to entertain you during the coronavirus pandemic like the cranky, bored toddler you are, dropping a previously unreleased Hamilton song last week, titled “I Have This Friend.” (Spoiler: The friend is Hamilton himself!) Now the composer and singer is asking you to stay home, pick up some soap, and spend 20 seconds thinking about all the Broadway performers who must be absolutely freaking out right now as venues and theaters close.
“Stay home, wash hands, here’s a live tune, and support actorsfund.org and broadwaycares.org if you can,” he wrote on Periscope, before kicking off a Hamilton sing-along. Added Miranda, “Shout out to all the parents who become school teachers tomorrow. Shout out to all the school teachers, who are heroes. Shout out to everyone who has to work, even thought they shouldn’t, and we should all stay home. I know that’s not always the case.”

Abigail Disney Wants You to Bippity Bop the Hell Away From Her Family’s Parks

Despite the burgeoning list of theme parks, large venues, and other live events temporarily shutting down in order to help flatten the curve of the coronavirus spread across America, Walt Disney World Resorts was still very much open in Florida last week, thanks to the unrelenting dedication of tourists desperate to buy $30 pins and eat their way through all of the Magic Kingdom neighborhoods. (Try not to shiver at the crowds after clicking here.) Abigail Disney, the House of Mouse heiress who has historically given zero fucks about upsetting the powers that be at her family’s company, got wind of these massive crowds, and ethered everyone’s collective irresponsibility in one tweet: “Are you fucking kidding me?”

With more than 100 coronavirus cases confirmed in Florida, Walt Disney World Resorts eventually relented and is closing the state’s four parks “in an abundance of caution and in the best interest of our guests and cast members.” These closures, which also include Disney-owned-and-operated hotels, will last from March 16 to March 31. If you were to still travel to Orlando to get your Disney fix, only “select restaurants and retail locations” at the Disney Springs outdoor shopping complex will remain open. Universal Studios Florida also shut down all park operations on March 15, and they “anticipate remaining closed” until March 31.

Image: A closer look at the natural ways to protect yourself against coronavirus

(Natural News) In recent months, the coronavirus pandemic — originating from Wuhan, China — has been taking the world by storm with more cases being reported daily. In fact, the World Health Organization (WHO) Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus recently announced that there are more than 118,000 confirmed cases of COVID-19 worldwide and that 4,291 have lost their lives to the infectious disease. According to Tedros, the WHO expects to see the number of cases and deaths climb even higher in the weeks ahead. Because of this, healthy-minded people are looking into ways to strengthen their body’s immune system in an attempt to find some sort of protection against the novel coronavirus.

How do you protect yourself against coronavirus?
COVID-19 is a flu-like disease caused by a member of the coronavirus family that is closely related to the SARS and MERS viruses that have caused outbreaks in the past. The disease is caused by a virus designated as SARS-CoV-2 by the Coronavirus Study Group (CSG) of the International Committee on Taxonomy of Viruses. COVID, on the other hand, is short for “coronavirus disease.” Those with confirmed cases reported symptoms such as coughing, fever and shortness of breath. However, severe cases of COVID-19 can lead to pneumonia and death.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has released guidelines on simple ways to prevent illness by limiting exposure to the virus. However, boosting the immune system can also help the body fight off infections like the coronavirus. Below you can find a few science-backed, natural ways that can provide adequate protection against the novel coronavirus pandemic. (Related: Natural ways to boost your immunity as coronavirus spreads.)

Elderberry
Elderberry is considered one of the most used medicinal plants in the world and has become a popular supplementary food against symptoms of the flu and common cold. While there are many species of elderberry, Sambucus nigra is often used for medicinal purposes due to the many health benefits it provides. However, Health Impact News reported that buying a prepared formula made with S. nigra is better than making your own from fresh berries. This is because elderberry contains natural toxins called cyanogenic glycosides which can cause vomiting, nausea, cramps and diarrhea.

Recent research has established that elderberry could reduce the effects of the common cold and influenza. A study done by researchers from the Hebrew University in Jerusalem enrolled patients who exhibited flu-like symptoms and asked them to take 15 milliliters (mL) of elderberry syrup four times a day for a testing period of five days. Their findings revealed that those who took the elderberry syrup recovered four days earlier than participants who took regular flu medications or a placebo.

Furthermore, another study, published in the journal Nutrients, gave 312 economy class passengers a 300 milligram (mg) dose of elderberry extract three times per day. The researchers found that passengers who got sick during the flight experienced much tamer symptoms and had shorter periods of illness, suggesting a significant reduction in cold duration and severity.

Colloidal Silver
Colloidal silver products are popular among holistic health circles and are touted as an effective antibacterial agent. However, recent studies have shown that colloidal silver can handle infectious viruses as well. In a study published in the Journal of Nanotechnology, a research team comprising of members from the University of Texas and Mexico University in Nuevo Leon found that silver nanoparticles could kill HIV-1 and other types of viruses in only three hours. The team incubated HIV-1 virus samples at 37 C and observed that the silver nanoparticle-preparations they tested eliminated 100 percent of the virus.

There are also studies that focused on the efficacy of colloidal silver against respiratory viruses similar to the novel coronavirus. A study published in the International Journal of Nanomedicine found that silver nanoparticles reduced the viral infectivity of human parainfluenza virus type 3. Researchers from the University of Naples theorized that silver is capable of doing so by blocking the interaction of the virus with the cell.

Vitamin C Supplements
Vitamin C is an essential vitamin, meaning that the body cannot produce it on its own and it must be gained from external sources. However, the vitamin plays many roles that promote overall health. A large portion of the world, especially in Asia and continental Europe, consider Vitamin C as a potent antiviral agent. Health Impact News reported that China has conducted several clinical trials that involved the intravenous application of vitamin C to treat patients with coronavirus.

While vitamin C has not been tested against coronavirus until recently, previous research has already established its effectiveness against other types of viral infections, such as influenza. A study conducted by researchers from the Seoul National University College of Medicine looked into the anti-viral immune response of vitamin C and found that it exhibits responses even at early times of influenza virus infections through the increased production of the antiviral cytokine interferon (IFN)-a/B.

Following safety precaution guidelines and even quarantining people can be effective ways to reduce the spread of coronavirus. However, these methods do not help in the event of coming into contact with the virus itself. Because of this, strengthening your immune system using natural ways should be considered as a viable and effective prevention protocol to keep yourself safe from the pandemic.

I feel like we should have an organized thread or sub forum to lend support

I KNOW its hard as hell to ask for help

But this is not that time.

We have members EVERYWHERE.

And if its just a check in or food or medicine situation that a fellow BGOL citizen can help with in anyway...

I hope y'all feel safe enough to ask on the main, basement or PM.

I've been telling all yall for YEARS

BGOL IS SPECIAL AND STILL DOESN'T REALLY KNOW WHAT WE GOT RIGHT HERE.

Again if you need help?

Please ask.

Don't wait

Bump an old thread of mine if you have too, trust everyone will notice

Peace and be safe

We shall overcome

Playa.

Imagine how they would be remembered if they did that. I mean wtf old ass Bloomberg gonna do with all that money. It would be legendary.

all joking aside though you saying Bloomberg Bezos and etc couldn't PAY for free drive thru testing for the WHOLE country?

and that is NOT a SMART move?
I'm laughing at the "Both have enough to give a mill to everyone"

There are 330 million people in America.

I know that Bloomberg and Bezos are wealthy....but to give everyone in America 1 million dollars, Bloomberg (or Bezos) would have to be TRILLIONAIRES. In the Hundreds of trillions.

With Money to spend.

Before Walmart stopped selling Handgun ammunition, I went and picked up another 150 rounds. Then I went to Bass Pro and got four more boxes of the new Winchester ammo they had (10 rds for $4.99) I've got plenty of ammo in case SHTF but I hope we never get to that point.

@DC_Dude Go on ahead and pickup a Mossberg 500 or Remington 870. Should hit you for less than $400.
