The San Francisco 49ers have suspended radio analyst Tim Ryan for one game following his comment that Baltimore Ravens quarterback Lamar Jackson has an advantage in faking handoffs because of his "dark skin color with a dark football."

“He’s really good at that fake, Lamar Jackson, but when you consider his dark skin color with a dark football with a dark uniform, you could not see that thing,” Ryan said on San Francisco radio station KNBR’s “Murph & Mac Show" on Monday.

“I mean, you literally could not see when he was in and out of the mesh point and if you’re a half step slow on him in terms of your vision, forget about it, he’s out of the gate," Ryan continued about Sunday's game in which the Ravens beat the 49ers, 20-17.

Jackson rushed for 101 yards in the game and so far this season has rushed for 977 yards. He is close to beating the NFL single-season rushing record by a quarterback, now held by Michael Vick, who ran for 1,039 yards in 2006.

Some on social media slammed Ryan's comments as racist, while others contended they were simply "dumb."

The 49ers said in a statement that Ryan would be suspended for the team's game against the New Orleans Saints on Sunday.

“We are disappointed in Tim Ryan’s comments earlier this week, and have suspended him for the upcoming game,” the team said. “We have reached out to the Baltimore Ravens organization to extend our apologies and assure them the matter is not being taken lightly.”

“We hold Tim to a high standard as a representative of our organization and he must be more thoughtful with his words," the statement added. "Tim has expressed remorse in a public statement and has also done so with us privately. We know Tim as a man of high integrity and are confident he will grow and learn from this experience."

In a statement released through the team, Ryan apologized.

“I regret my choice of words in trying to describe the conditions of the game," he said. "Lamar Jackson is an MVP-caliber player and I respect him greatly. I want to sincerely apologize to him and anyone else I offended.”

Ryan, a former player for the Chicago Bears, has been a radio announcer for the 49ers for six seasons and prior to that was a TV analyst on Fox.

Rev. Jethroe Moore II, president of NAACP Silicon Valley-San Jose, said he would like to meet with Ryan before he returns from suspension.

"Part of his coming back should be coming to meet with members of the African American community for better understanding of how those words can be hurtful," Moore said, according to NBC Bay Area. "That includes the 49er players and actually letting them talk about how they feel about the comments."

I do not believe he said it with any sort of malice or intended it to be inflammatory nor derogatory. In fact, BECAUSE he said it in a spur of the moment, off the top of his head while ON AIR, says a lot more than if this was some leaked audio of him speaking in the confines of his personal social circle.

He clumsily stated that the ball becomes camouflaged by Lamar's skin tone and uniform and that provides Lamar with a slight edge. :dunno:

I'm about as offended as when I encounter someone from the all white interior of Wisconsin happen to refer to a Black person as Colored. I chuckle, tell them how stuck in the past they are and keep it moving.

I disagree he should have said that of air that sounds so stupid and racist when he said it on here also Baltimore wears dark uniforms

Had he said it off air, then it would've seemed like he had reason to hide his observation as though HE WAS being bigoted. What he said wasn't unfounded, it was just tailor made to taken out of context by hypervigilant people looking to pounce at any given moment.

I haven't watched football in a couple of years, but saw this on twitter via Bomani Jones feed. A couple of things came immediately to mind.

People say remarkably racist things without thinking every day. In fact, "on the spur of the moment" is usually when their TRUE feelings come out.

I think I've said it on here before, but I was once asked by a white guy about my job. He, in front of other people said; "That's a really good job..how did you get it? Through some kind of work-release program?"

To the best of my knowledge and recollection, I have never been incarcerated, nor have provided any reason for any rational person to assume I have been. I don't have tattoos. I don't use slang (much)... but I AM a large black man.

So, were his remarks spur of the moment? Yes. Did he intend Malice? I doubt it. Was his question insensitive and indicative of the prevailing white supremacist mindset these folks hold?

Absolutely. Because in his mind, he could not imagine a guy who looks like I do, getting a scholarship, studying and being smart enough or good enough to get, hold and excel in that job.

There may or may not have been malice attached to Ryan's comments, but like dude that asked about my job, they were still insensitive and

indicative of the "context of racism and white supremacy" that we are under in this American culture and as such had no place on television.

I feel like this was just another example of how the white supremacist bias never goes away. Ryan is, even if unconsciously trying to explain why this black person is so good at something WITHOUT giving him props for hard work or hours of study and practice- because in the white mind, we are incapable of such diligence. He couldn't just say; "Jackson is SO good at that QB option, he and the RB are really selling it" and Oh yeah, the 9ers lost.

I wonder how this guy explains Steve Young being number 4 or so on the all time QB rushing list. No doubt it is because of his dedicated time spent studying and analyzing opposing defense and stringent exercise regimen, strict diet, attention to detail and "leadership abilities" that allowed him to succeed.

Another thing that annoys me is that only to a white person's eye could Lamar Jackson and a football be REMOTELY the same color.

don't white quarterbacks wear dark (black) under-armor sleeves or throwing sleeves and gloves sometimes? even with dark uniforms? I wonder if their rushing YPG increases when they do... because, you know.. camouflage.

Soooo, ya'll ready for this next season?

I disagree here. He said it with malice because he was looking to discredit his skills as a quarterback. It was not clumsily stated. In fact he laughed afterwards to drive the point even more that the only reason this QB can fake people out is because of his dark skin. Not because of his talent or work ethic.

You know i hear you.

And maybe a different time place and president? I could go along.

But unfortunately nope.

Black voices the few that exist are NEVER given such leeway and consideration

And you can't be a highly trained and highly paid voice and make THAT kind of f*ck up.

That ain't spur of the moment

And even if it was?

It was clumsly and offensive no matter if we are personally offended.

Wtf kinda pro play by play analysis is that anyway?

If he had fumbled like that concerning a players sexuality religion or political affiliation he would immediately fired.

But he would never do that.

Why?

Cause that white man KNOWS BETTER.

but he gonna try to do some post jimmy the greek racial tightrope walk in 2019?

I call bullsh*t.

He gotta go.

Please please please tell on all that is holy

That it is not true Stephen a smith did not try to defend this act and say he shouldn't be fired?

Please tell me its not true

Of course, he did.

Shannon kinda did the same thing.

It's amazing how everyone is saying he shouldn't lose his job but let him say something fucked up shit about gays.

Everyone gets to be outraged but black people and I'm about sick it.

We're the only group that has to apologize for our own death, defend fucked up statements from other people, forgive and etc.

Im also not surprised that Richard "All Lives Matter" Sherman is defending this fuckery

Cam Netwon caught hell for dimissing a female reporter yet folks are caping for this dude.

It was a dumb statement, but there was no intent to be racist. He was being racial about a topic that has nothing to do with race, but he had no ill intent. Jimmy The Greek kind of did the same thing by bringing up race and the power of the Black athlete and how slave owners always wanted the strongest Black dude. There was no ill intent there either, but white folks need to stay away from this subject. They just aren't qualified to speak on it and it's always going to be taken the wrong way.

I got cha. You and @vertigo made some very valid points about the position in which he plays and why the statement is more than what it seems on the surface.
I was taking it at face value, but that attitude is quite prevalent in regards to Black QBs. Y'all make some excellent points that I didn't initially factor into the equation.

I have re-evaluated my original position.

They just can't contain their racism can they? so you mean to tell me he's so dark til he's disappearing during the game and reappearing in the end zone? instead of stating the facts that he is what they wish brady was and that's more atheletic with an arm.

I hope he get's more than just suspended but fired and this is another reason why it's still FUCK THE NFL and some of you need not watch, buy merch or support anything NFL still because they don't respect us even though we make up 80 + % of the game which is entertainment.

Come on now. Some outrage is bullshit, other times there's something to it. In this case, it was just dumb shit to say.

Why do leftists always try to deny the sensitivity increase?
