Laurence Fishburne will get a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 2020. The Black-ish actor has enjoyed a long, successful career and made history when he starred in the 1991 John Singleton film Boyz n the Hood as Furious Styles. Fishburne’s career has thrived for over four decades and he is undoubtedly a star in the public’s eyes. Now he will have his own star to prove it.

While many people in today’s younger generation know Laurence Fishburne for his role as Pops on Black-ish and Morpheus in The Matrix franchise, his career encompasses much more than these two highlights.

Laurence Fishburne’s first role was in the 1972 made for television movie If You Give A Dance, You Gotta Pay The Band. In 1975, Laurence made his debut on the silver screen in the movie Cornbread, Earl and Me. Over the years he starred in many more movies including Apocalypse Now, Death Wish II, Rumble Fish, The Cotton Club, The Color Purple, School Daze, What’s Love Got To Do With It, The Matrix franchise, Mystic River, the John Wick films and The Mule.

Just?? When should he have gotten it? After Pee Wee's Playhouse? I like Laurence, but I'm still not so sure he should have a star. Then again there's a few people who shouldn't have 1.

Furious Styles... Professor Phipps... Socrates Fortlow... Bumpy Johnson... Hannibal Lee... Maaaaaaan Mr. Fishburn should've BEEN had a star... For a time he was that dude.

Now I fux with Socrates Fortlow

"You got to move now boy!"

didn't even let him say bye to his moms lmaooo! But nah man, I don't think he has had enough influence to have a star yet. I'm not saying I hate him, and I'm not tryna single him out. But him and a lot of other people shouldn't have a star. But it's not my Walk of Fame

Nothing against Fishburne, but PR folks and money get people stars on the Walk of Fame.

It doesn't have the same prestige as it once did.
Yeah I saw the other day Spike Lee will get his next year. Not sure how Dwayne Johnson got one before Spike.

Just a sidenote >> Celebrities cannot buy/get their own star on the Walk of Fame.
  • A Celebrity has to get nominated by a 'Sponsor'. (a Sponsor could be a wealthy individual, or a fan club, or a regular citizen, or anyone at all)
  • After that, the Sponsor/Star has to get approved by the (5 member) Walk of Fame Committee.
  • The Walk of Fame Committee approves about 25 Celebs every year, to get a star.
  • Also, the Celebrity has to actually WANT to get a star, once they get nominated. (Some Celebs don't want it when they get initially nominated. For various reasons.)
  • Then the 'Sponsor' has to pay a sponsorship fee of $40,000 to buy the actual "star" that will be installed on the sidewalk..
  • And lastly, the honored Celebrity has to AGREE to attend the ceremony on the day when their star is officially installed on the sidewalk.
Some Celebs who have refused their Star in the past include:

Prince
Julia Roberts
Clint Eastwood
Bruce Springsteen
Denzel Washington
George Clooney
Al Pacino
Robert Redford
George Lucas
Robert DeNiro
Warren Beatty
Will Smith
Diane Keaton
Mel Gibson
Jim Carrey
Michael Keaton
Peter Sellers
Brad Pitt & Angelina Jolie

Prince originally turned down a star on the Holywood Walk of Fame back when his song "1999" was released.

Bruce Springsteen accepted his Walk of Fame honor...... but then famously never showed up to his ceremony.

The Walk of Fame committee has a rule that an honoree must schedule the ceremony within 5 years of accepting the prize.

Denzel Washington, George Clooney and Al Pacino are a few who have also accepted a star....... but then failed to set a date.

Some folks are busy working. Some folks feel that they haven't given 'their best performance' yet, to merit getting the Star.

Some folks might not even LIKE the actual Sponsor who nominated them. :dunno: (and might not want to be in their debt, for doing so)

People are weird. Some are highly superstitious & feel getting a Star on the Walk of Fame might hinder their career somehow. :dunno:

Some Actors would rather get their Star after they die / pass away.... as the 'final recognition' of their lifelong career in Entertainment. (For some, it's like the honor of being enshrined into the "Hall of Fame" of Pro Sports) So they might have it written into their Last Will & Testament that they want their sons, or daughters (or grandchildren, or surviving spouse) to be the 'Sponsor' who attends the ceremony on their behalf... as a way to celebrate / remember them and all their achievements.

They have all kinds of reasons for not accepting it. :dunno: Everyone is different.

Andy Kaufman has been dead since 1984 - why is he suddenly now getting a star? And as much as I love his music, same question for Muddy Waters. Most of the Black "honorees" I thought either had won years ago (Spike Lee!) or have no business being on the list (Billy Porter?).

The Hollywood Walk of Fame Class of 2020 are:

In the category of MOTION PICTURES: Mahershala Ali, Batman, Ruth E. Carter, Laurence Fishburne, Chris Hemsworth, Spike Lee, Julia Roberts, Octavia Spencer and Lina Wertmüller

In the category of TELEVISION: Christina Applegate, Andy Cohen, Cindy Crawford, Terry Crews, Harry Friedman, Kathie Lee Gifford, Nigel Lythgoe, Milo Ventimiglia, Burt Ward, Wendy Williams, Dr. Phil McGraw and Andy Kaufman (Posthumous)

In the category of RECORDING: Elvis Costello, Sir Lucian Grainge, Billy Idol, Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson, Alicia Keys, Andy Madadian, Mo Ostin, Bobby Rydell, Alejandro Sanz, Tanya Tucker and Muddy Waters (Posthumous)

In the category of LIVE THEATRE/LIVE PERFORMANCE: Dave Chappelle and Billy Porter

In the category of RADIO: Susan Stamberg
