Yeah thats part of the problem. The show runners were ready to move on. HBO wanted to do more seasons. But around the start of season 5 airing. The actors/actresses we're saying that they wanted to move on to other projects.

After the season 5 was done. That's when they announced the future plans for the show. Season six would be 10 episodes. Season 7 and season 8 would be shorten.

I think if jon were to end up on the throne it would be considered a happy ending and thats not how this show rolls. I think maybe sansa lost faith in jon. Danerys is too power hungry. Who else would sansa consider a better option? Tyrion?
It would be a fitting end to the series imo.

True, and because of that it's overly cliche to do it. The only thing that's enabled this series to limp home without jumping the shark is that they've kept cliche storylines to a minimum. Not saying Jon won't end up on the throne, just that it's the easy thing to write and that's not how they've rocked.
