"All in the Family" and its spinoff series "The Jeffersons" were two of the boldest and most beloved sitcoms of the 1970s and early '80s. In fact, both shows were so groundbreaking that many pop culture spectators and industry insiders have long claimed they'd never even make it on network TV these days.

But Norman Lear, the writer and producer behind both hits, is ready to prove the naysayers wrong with a one-night-only live special featuring new stars in the same old roles.

ARCHIE AND EDITH

Standing in for Carroll O'Connor and Jean Stapleton, the late leads on "All in the Family," will be Woody Harrelson, 57, as Archie Bunker and Marisa Tomei, 54, as his always loving (and long-suffering) wife, Edith.

Woody Harrelson and Marisa Tomei will star as the Bunkers in the all-new live special.

In the original series, which put the spotlight on racism, sexism, socioeconomic inequalities and a number of other societal concerns, the Bunkers were a blue-collar family who lived alongside their entrepreneurial neighbors, George and Louise "Weezy" Jefferson — a couple of characters that proved so popular, they got their own show.

GEORGE AND WEEZY

In upcoming prime-time special, which is set to air on ABC in May, the duo who famously "moved on up" to the East Side will be back beside their old neighbors again.

The role of George, made famous by star Sherman Hemsley, will played by Jamie Foxx, 51, while Weezy, first portrayed by Isabel Sanford, will be brought to life by 55-year-old actress and comedian Wanda Sykes.

Jamie Foxx and Wanda Sykes will channel their inner George and Weezy for "The Jeffersons" portion of the upcoming live special.

Other stars set to be seen in the production are Ellie Kemper, Will Ferrell and Justina Machado. And according to the network, more cast members will be announced soon.

Late night TV host Jimmy Kimmel will join forces with 96-year-old Lear to host the broadcast.

“The fact that a group of Oscar winners eagerly agreed to play these iconic characters is a testament to the greatness of these shows and their creator, Norman Lear," Kimmel said in a press release about the TV event.

As for Lear, he can't wait for those people who never thought these programs could return to see what's in store.

"(We) are here to prove — with two great casts depicting ‘All in the Family’ and ‘The Jeffersons’ — the timelessness of human nature," he said in a statement of his own.

they dont know what the fuck they doin, they need my creativity so bad..

damn shame they cant afford it..

They going to water that shit down. :smh: That shit too real for outrage culture.

It's one night only, so little pressure. Have you heard of South Park, grandpa? They'll be fine.

(Seriously-- Archie was always played as the idiot and always got his comeuppance. It was never that "dangerous." Some offensive things will be said-- that's a must-- but the morality will be uncontroversial.)

I'm calling FAIL right now!!!

They going to water that shit down. :smh: That shit too real for outrage culture.
The PC climate of today can't handle it … tv is suffering …. reboots everywhere ,,,, some shit just can't be done again … it was a hit in it's own era … the only remote possible chance of it barely succeeding would be if they made it like a reality show for the reality tv climate that we now live in ….

If it is anything close to the original, there will be apologies(at least demands for them). The shows are meant to be controversial.

Get ready for all the 'here's why' articles and pieces using random tweets to take shots at the shows. :smh:

Yeah, impossible for today

Every tweet is not significant. Nor every blog post.

Can you point to a single episode of either series that would be unairable today because it couldn't survive the backlash? I think I've seen every episode of each and I don't believe such an episode exists (because the "p.c. problem" of powerless protesters is not nearly the all-encompassing Goliath some make it out to be).

That lady from US had to apologize to people over a fucking voice. It's so ridiculous that I can't even predict what they will bitch about and I'm usually good at that shit.

Entire 'outrage' articles are based off random tweets. Ever check Yahoo? They do it every fucking day it seems. Headline like 'such and such happened and twitter is(insert term).'

I'm not saying shit is unairable. Just saying outrage will happen if the shows are done true to form. Shows based around two straight males who constantly take shots at people. Yeah, that won't cause outrage.

IMHO even Seinfeld would cause outrage if it were fresh today. Imagine the 'woke' crowd talking about Webster. I could go on.

It's ironic how perpetually outraged you are at perpetual outrage.

Yes, people will write about it. Pretty much every conceivable take will be took. But outrage over the Virginia governor posing in blackface didn't force him to resign, nor did outrage at rape accusations force the lieutenant governor to resign. Tucker Carlson will reach millions of people on his TV show this week. Ann Coulter will write books from her mansion for the rest of her life. Just chill out about people being unchill because it doesn't mean as much as you think it does.

They don't have to water the show down and there's no basis for assuming they will. (Norman Lear cares about the legacy of his shows, so all incentive is to the opposite effect.) They still run the old episodes! And any of them could air today. And, yes, freedom of speech works both ways and a lot of people would talk and tweet about it. Just like you can preemptively complain about the inevitable complaints. Life is messier than it was in the 70s and it's good to have more voices and more examination, even if a segment of them piss you off sometimes.

Just on gay comments alone The Gay Mafia would have a field day. Something tells me they won't touch that subject.

Racial stuff? Chappelle used to hit that pretty hard but no way they will have that level of comedy writing talent.

Edit: The white folks (Archie of course) can't make any overtly racial comments. George different story.

 Like folks say, I'm outraged at the outrage.

I do like Jamie as George. They really doing this though? Archie gonna have to talk some shit in order for it to work. Trump will be used a lot.

I guess they are testing the waters with this presentation. If it does huge numbers the network will call for it to be a series. I think that is why they are doing it in this fashion. If it tanks in ratings and with viewers it has the built in excuse of being a tribute. The live aspect is good too. Have that anything can happen(although it won't lol) aspect.

I agree Wanda Sykes is better off for Florence, but who could really play Weezy or George? Jamie did a really good job not making me think of Jamie Foxx in Ray. I have a feeling I won't get that vibe with him as George though.

The real sitcom that will never return to network tv though is SOAP. That thing watching it now is a PR nightmare and it was bad enough back then from what I read.

Who remembers Archie telling Edith to put out some fried chicken for Sammy Davis Jr. because they like to nibble on that?

There absolutely will be some shit like that this time around. I expect it to be more targeted at immigration/Hispanics, though, for 2019.

Trump really is like Archie Bunker became president. Not just the racism and lack of intelligence but so many mannerisms.

The two stand-ups will have a hard time living up to Sherman Hemsley and Isabel Sanford, who hilariously portrayed the couple who moved from Queens “on up to the east side” with their son, Lionel. They will join Will Ferrell as George and Louise’s friend Tom Willis and Justina Machado as Jefferson housekeeper Florence Johnston. The roles of Helen Willis, Lionel Jefferson, Jenny Willis and Mother Jefferson have yet to be cast.

I like Will Ferrell but I don't know about him as Tom Willis. That's the most questionable casting choice so far IMO.

Although I fucks wit Woddy Harrelson but I'm thinking John Goodman would have been a better choice for Archie and I don't even know who the chick is they have playing Edith but I would have put Bette Midler there. I know she hasn't done anything recently but she would have killed that role. Also, I'm praying to God they don't put Tiffany Haddish as Florence. :smh:

Check the previous post-- Ebony says Florence will be played by Justina Machado.

Woody and Marisa....... Eeehh....

I don't see it, but I'm not gonna trash it just yet.... Woody pulls off a good performance out of unlikable characters and Archie is the perennial unlikable, but beloved, character......

Also..... Wanda.... That's a stretch, but maybe they know / saw something I just cant picture.... Its one night..... I'll look at it

Great pull...

I was talking about SOAP in another thread not long ago

Forgotten subversive smart funny work.
