Actress Lupita Nyong'o apologized after facing backlash for comments she made that one of the characters she plays in the horror film "Us" was inspired by a disorder that impacts people who have experienced emotional or physical trauma.

"The thought that I would, in a way, offend them was not my intention," Nyong'o said on "The View" on Thursday. "In my mind, I wasn't interested in vilifying or demonizing the condition. I crafted Red with love and care."

In Jordan Peele's latest movie about a family who encounters their evil doppelgängers, Nyong'o plays two characters by the names of Adelaide Wilson and Red.

During an interview with Variety at the Los Angeles premiere of “Us,” the actress said she drew inspiration for Red's husky, shaky voice from spasmodic dysphonia, a neurological condition that causes a person's voice to go into periods of spasm.

The disorder affects roughly 50,000 people in North America and is triggered by "illnesses such as viral infection, head trauma, bronchitis, surgery, or a stressful event," according to the National Spasmodic Dysphonia Association, which states that the number of people affected by the disorder varies because some with it are not diagnosed or misdiagnosed.

The actress' comments quickly drew criticism from disability and disorder organizations including RespectAbility, a nonprofit which fights stigmas placed on people with disabilities.

"The issue at hand is that in order to intentionally achieve a creepy effect, the creative choice was to make the character have a disability — and demonizing the disability," the organization wrote in a lengthy post on its website.

The National Spasmodic Dysphonia Association also issued a statement criticizing the actress, saying that for many people with the disorder their voices are considered "haunting."

"We applaud the work of Ms. Nyong’o and this opportunity to educate about this rare voice condition, but for the Spasmodic Dysphonia community, this disorder does not end when the movie is over," the organization said.

Nyong'o said on "The View" that when she said her character was inspired by the disorder she had hoped to shed light on it, not offend anyone.

"In mentioning, spasmodic dysphonia, I may have been disproportionate to what it actually is in the film," she said. "I say sorry to anyone I may have offended."

A spokesperson for RespectAbility said it a statement Friday that the organization appreciates Nyong'o's apology, but said the practice of using disabilities to villainize a movie character "needs to end."

“We’re all on a learning journey to be sensitive to all marginalized communities whether it be race, gender, sexual orientation/gender identity, disability, religion or anything else," the spokesperson said. "We hope Nyong’o will use this experience to continue lifting up other marginalized groups."

Lupita Nyong'o apologized for saying that she based the voice of her evil Usdoppelganger Red on a neurological disorder.

"The thought that I would, in a way, offend them was not my intention," Nyong'o said during a visit to The View on Thursday. "In my mind, I wasn't interested in vilifying or demonizing the condition. I crafted Red with love and care."

Nyong'o's apology comes after several disability advocate organizations condemned the actress for revealing that she based Red's halting, croaking voice on spasmodic dysphonia, a condition that causes the voice to spasm that was long believed to be the result of trauma.

“We understand that hearing the unique sound caused by symptoms of spasmodic dysphonia was the spark of inspiration for the voice of this character," the National Spasmodic Dysphonia Association said in a statement, after Nyong'o revealed her inspiration to Variety. "What is difficult for us, and for the thousands of people living with spasmodic dysphonia, is this association to their voice with what might be considered haunting.”

The disorder advocate organization RespectAbility —which reacted to the initial reveal that Nyong'o based her voice on the condition— accepted the actress' apology while calling on Hollywood to avoid the demonization of people with disabilities in the future.

“We appreciate Lupita Nyong’o’s heartfelt apology…We hope Nyong’o will use this experience to continue lifting up all marginalized groups including the 1-in-5 people who live with disabilities," they said. "In general, the Hollywood practice of using disability primarily to villainize people or to show them as objects of pity needs to end.”

but they ADDED Forrest Gump on the list...

sidebar...

but then that is real interesting...

if you win an AWARD then its NOT offensive?

It's interesting that the majority of the movies in that tweet were at the least critical successes or they ended up being academy award nominated/winning films.

James McAvoy in Split--critical success
Sean Penn In I Am Sam--EDIT--he was nominated for best actor
Tom Hanks in Forrest Gump--academy award winner
The whole cast of One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest--academy award winner
Leo DiCaprio in What’s Eatinf Gilbert Grape--critical success
Dustin Hoffman in Rain Man--academy award winner
Colin Firth in King’s Speech--academy award winner

Wish people would stop fucking apologizing. This that outrage culture that's going to help give us 4 more years of Trump. :smh:
And that's the problem!

Yes, clarify what you meant if it was taken out of context but fuck apologizing.

How are you sorry when you didn't do anything wrong.

We live in a time where if you have a fanbase, it's damn near impossible to get black balled so why say "sorry"?

The main reason for these lame ass apologies is the person is scared of doing it all on their own...Kevin Heart for example...Nigga you are set for life, have a strong fanbase and can bank off of the internet....fuck is you apologizing for?

Throw in Adam Sandler and Waterboy too

Most of those listed are not the same. The difference is that in this movie, the disability was used to make a creepy horror film killer scarier- which therefore casts those individuals with that disability who likely already are misjudged into the realm of creepy.

From the movies that lady listed, the only equivalent was James McAvoy in Split, since a character suffering with multiple personality disorder was portrayed as a homicidal maniac and a monster because of it.

The point the National Spasmodic Dysphonia Association was making is that Lupita having given that explanation inadvertently portrayed their condition as monstrous.

I'm sure that wasn't her intent at all.

I loved "US". Consider it to be one of the most unique and brilliant movies that I've seen. Went to see it twice. Love Lupita forever in it and out of it. But she should never have revealed what her true inspiration was. Had she not done that or given another explanation that doesn't mention an existing disability she would not have received this backlash from those who suffer from the disorder.

It's to the point where people don't even have to clarify shit. Just don't even acknowledge it. We've learned this outrage shit moves fast. Folks will find something else to be outraged about the next day. Wait out the storm.

It's the people who aren't your fans who are outraged. Fuck them. These people want to play victim and bully at the same fucking time. :hithead:

Lmao y'all thought it was gonna be one way.

And the victimhood syndrome rolls on

Yeah, I keep telling fools to stop contributing to this outrage shit. It's all fun and games when outrage and censorship is for what you want, but that shit is spreading like a cancer.

I wonder how long a site like BGOL can exist before some hippie stumbles upon it and wants users exposed.

VictimBowl 2020 is coming

People need to STOP apologizing. Just stop. Gay people complain when you make gay jokes. Christians complain when you make christian jokes. Jews complain when you make Jewish jokes. Just GTFOH with all this bullshit already. Stop apologizing. You said what you said and you're not wrong.

I have no issue with her apology...I can see why people with the disability would be offended (not so much with what was said but how it can be interpreted)...hopefully with her apology this is the end of it but I suspect not ...I think she can win some major awards for her dual acting jobs in the film but this may derail that and that would be a shame

If I were an actor I’d go off on all these sensative pussies. I’d probably get black listed

It fits NOW in the age of the internet.
Like I said the art of Blackballing is slowly slipping away.
Motherfuckas can make a dumb ass YouTube movie and secure a bag with the right fan base...no need to bootlick and ass kiss if you didn't do anything wrong.

Again...you right

But she did not bootlick and ass kick

She apologized

Respectfully

Cause probably SOME REAL people were genuinely offended.

But besides that?

She made herself look good, protected Peele and the rest of the cast

And got a TON OF FREE POSITIVE PROMOTION for the movie.

What is the problem here?

Cause what you talking? got an unnecessarily high margin for error ie kevin hart jess hilarious etc.

Its a business fam... she trying to work and get paid. And she did it without hurting anybody and keeping her self respect.

I understand it's business but the fake apologies need to stop....She could have clarified and said "I didn't mean to offend anyone" and that could have been it.
Apologizing for something you didn't do is a form a bootlicking in my opinion.

Shit you have racist crackers in the government saying some fucked up shit these days...they get called out for it and refuse to apologize...guess what happens??? NOTHING...WHY? Because they have a fanbase (other racist crackers) that will still support them.

but see again you are right and I agree.

Also so many people of ACTUAL influence have given so many FAKE bullsh*t apologizes and down right REFUSED to apologize...

most apologies don't even resonate.

the "public" goes after the most high profile and accessible

NEVER the REAL people in POWER

that has been happening since DAY ONE way before social media and #metoo and victim shaming etc existed

but I disagree with your definition of boot-licking.

and to be honest once you in operating in THOSE circles?

You PERSONALLY gonna go apesh*t cause what YOU calling bootlicking?

Is standard operating procedure for the most part.

In fact, sadly MOST of America who working check to check?

this would be called LIVING.

I really wish it was different.
