Idris Elba could be stepping into Task Force X just as Will Smith walks away. Elba is in talks to replace Smith in The Suicide Squad according to THR. The site reports that according to their sources, Elba met with Gunn on Friday and it went so well that talks began with the studio. The Luthor actor was Gunn and the studio’s first and only choice.

If he signs on, Elba would join Margot Robbie who is expected to reprise her role as Harley Quinn. THR notes that there is conflicting information about whether Joel Kinnaman’s Rick Flagg will return, with one source saying he’s expected to be back and another source saying he’s no longer in the film. Gunn is reportedly using mostly DC characters who weren’t in the 2016 film.

This would be Elba’s second superhero film for one of the Big Two, having played Heimdall in the Thor films. He follows Zachary Levi in jumping from Marvel to DC; Levi played Fandral in Thor: The Dark World and Thor: Ragnarok before signing on to play Shazam in the upcoming film about that DC hero.

The Suicide Squad is set to release on August 6th, 2021.

Although Idris Elba was supposed to replace Will Smith as Deadshot in James Gunn’s “The Suicide Squad,” the actor will now play another character as Deadshot will no longer be featured in the movie.

Last month, it was reported that Elba would take on the role after Smith exited the project due to scheduling conflicts. He is set to begin shooting the “Bright” sequel for Netflix in July, according to an individual with knowledge of the projects, while Warner Bros. is set to begin production on the “Suicide Squad” sequel in September.

Warner Bros. had no comment.

Former “Guardians of the Galaxy” director James Gunn was brought on board to helm the project. He also wrote the script and will have a completely new take on the property, in which DC supervillains are recruited by the government to carry out secret missions too dirty for the likes of Superman and Batman.

“The Suicide Squad,” being produced by Peter Safran and Charles Roven, is expected to hit theaters on August 6, 2021.

Elba will next be seen playing the villain in “Fast & Furious” spinoff “Hobbs & Shaw” opposite Dwayne Johnson and Jason Statham. Elba will also be seen next month in the new Netflix comedy series, “Turn Up Charlie,” as a struggling British DJ trying to get his break in the music business.

Variety first reported the news that Deadshot would be cut and Elba would assume a different role.

Maybe he is going to play Bronze Tiger..

if theyre smart theyd cut Harley Quinn from this too so it wont have any ties to the first film

i hope not. i would have hoped they would have casted him as mr. terrific since his career is done with marvel

that whole movie was terrible so terrible i don't even know the point of it nor the ending

I just read somewhere that the crew from the movie wished James Gunn a happy birthday, and he just growled at the camera on the tweet...

he's playing bronze tiger, or that's the new rumor.

John Cena in that jawn also... he's Peacemaker

Wait the director is going to play bronze tiger?

Yeah Will needs to stay away from these non lead roles, he does not make a good side character, Idris just the opposite, he's excelled in team and side character roles.

Rumored title... Suicide Squad: Kill The Justice League...
