Mine went out gotta have it it’s the middle of winter that mofo set me back $6700.00 for 1600 sq ft house & installers said that was a deal :bullshit: anyway In 2020 government made it mandatory to go to a more environmentally friendly Freon so any leak or repair to any units that require Freon you will have to get a new unit after 2020 now you up on thang so start save no now $$$

A lot of R22 which was the go-to refrigerant for most residential cooling units. There are laws ending them manufacture of R22 but most repair outlets have enough on hand to last for a few years. As long as some is available, it can be used, and it never spoils. I just recently sold a 30 pound tank of R12 and they stopped the manufacture of that 20 years ago. I would not recommend buying a new unit that operated on R22, but even if you did, you'd find adequate supplies for at least a few years and once you couldn't there is refrigerant R453A which is touted as a drop-in replacement. You could just evacuate the unit of the remaining R22 and fill with the new juice. Even the oil can remain. Also 6700 dollars is ridiculously expensive for a new furnace and AC unit for a 1600 sq, ft, house. Even for an expensive brand such as Carrier you'd be 0ne to two thousand too high.

Average price for 5 ton installed around here is about $5,000. Had to get one for my house and moms in the last couple years.. New heat pumps come with R-410A its cheaper than the old R22.
That's why he paid far too much. A five ton unit is WAYYY too big for a 1600 sq. ft. house under any conditions! Closer to 3 tons would be about right for his house.

Just went off on the deep end myself 3 1/2 ton with a 16 SEER rating with an air scrubber along with air purification 7,000.00 they got there at 9 and gone by 3...well worth it to me...both carrier in and out

So mine went out a few years ago had it replaced through the program at my utility company basically adding the cost of it to my bill over time in monthly installments. Anyone within a month or two something went wrong with it simple repair nothing major. Don’t you know after that they never charged me for it

My unit is 16 years old. (Crib built in 2003) House is 1600 sqft.

So far heat is going strong. However, AC is not cooling as effectively. I may have to replace this year.

Lots of good info in this thread!

Those that recently replaced unit how old was it before failing?

I'm building a new full custom home this year and I have told the builder that he must install Carrier or nothing.

Have you had your house pre tested?
Trane, Lennox , and Carrier arevthe top brands and they all have different traits that make them work better in certain situations. Have an A/C company that installs all three come out and do some testing and go over the results with them...... wit yo cocky ass...

I 1st considered Trane ....however what sold me on the Carrier units was the parts were universal and that the Trane you might have to wait for a part to get in whenever its in need of repair

I'm using an architect and a real licensed builder who knows what to do. A graduate of GA Tech, not an apprentice of yours.
My current AC is Carrier and it's 15 years old with no problem. I always stay with what works.
I have researched the 2 stage Carrier and that's what I'm getting if it's okay with you.

Mine failed after 16 years. Our home was built in 2001, we replaced it in 2017.

We live in Florida and the AC is used daily.

Honestly didn’t do any with the one that failed. We bought the house/moved in June 2016. The AC died on us about a year later, May 2017.

The new one we have had it maintained once so far, and every few months we pour white vinegar down the AC drain pipe to clean it out.

We got a ten year warranty on our joint. Trying to make sure it lasts.
