A’s Reporter Wishes Physical Harm on Kyler Murray for Choosing NFL over Baseball

Last night, A’s fans got the bad news that the team’s most recent first-round pick, Heisman winner Kyler Murray, will likely be pursuing an NFL careerinstead of joining the Athletics’ minor league system. Many fans were bummed out by the news, though baseball writer Jen Rainwater of SB Nation’s A’s site Athletics Nation was apparently mad enough that she wished catastrophic injury upon Murray for ditching the A’s. The offending tweets, sent around midnight Pacific time, are below.

One would think that by now A’s fans would be better at taking news of players leaving the team. In the intervening hours since Rainwater sent the tweet, her Twitter account has been deactivated and Athletics Nation announced that they’d “ended their relationship” with her. According to an interview she didwith the SB Nation mothership in October (part of a series on the women of SB Nation’s team sites), she’d been writing for Athletics Nation since March. Reached by email, a Vox Media rep told Deadspin, “We can not comment any further but I would refer you to the Athletics Nation tweet.”





After Black Sports Online picked up the story last night, several people shared stories of unsavory interactions with Rainwater. NBC Sports’ Jessica Kleinschmidt shared a long rambling message from Rainwater where she called Kleinschmidt a “big haired fat bimbo” and blamed her for the hypothetical future death of her adopted shelter dog Bella.

You can say the same for his baseball career:


Considering he has [fewer] at-bats under his belt than his peers, he's likely two to three seasons away from reaching the majors," Cooper wrote last month. "And then he would be another three seasons away from arbitration. So his first big payday for baseball would likely not come until 2023 or 2024. His first chance at free agency would likely come after the 2026 or 2027 seasons. At that point, Murray will be 29 or 30, which means he's likely to get one significant free-agent contract if he ends up being a very productive regular."

But he's gonna be a Quarterback so:


Franchise quarterbacks typically have long careers, avoid serious injuries, and retire with more than $150 million in earnings. If, for example, Murray played running back or linebacker, there would be no discussion; he should play baseball because running backs and linebackers, on average, play for 4-5 seasons and earn substantially less than quarterbacks.

As for the $4.6 million he'd have to return to the A's, consider this:

Lamar Jackson's rookie deal as the 32nd overall pick: four years, $9.5 million and a $4.9 million signing bonus.

Baker Mayfield's rookie deal as the first-overall pick: four years, $32.7 million and a $21.8 million signing bonus.

And as soon as he's drafted he's probably gonna get a endorsement deal.

If he is a first round pick he will get more guaranteed money out the gate playing football and have a much better quality of life.

Odds are he won't turn into a bigger star in baseball than he will in football.

They drafted him off pure athleticism in baseball.

Not to mention he knows how to protect himself.
