When I would go on there my settings kept me within a community of friends and family. I generally would not accept friend requests from people I did not know unless they were family members who I never met. I'm not easy going or openly friendly in person so I don't pretend to be online.
I've been weaning myself off it too. I've already decided to stop buying Facebook advertising for my business. This month I'm going to stop posting pictures and/or links except through messenger.
To me their policies are bad enough, but the real problem is what the site makes its users become.
Practically everybody has at least a view offensive or irrational opinions. Once someone express one of these opinions on Facebook they end up with a bunch of like-minded enablers which makes them feel as if these ideas are mainstream. Once you question these opinions or disagree with them you become the enemy and get banned from their page and life. It doesn't matter how correct you are or how respectful you are the fact that you disagreed is bad enough.
If you choose to ignore their crazy opinion eventually it will end up as a comment on your page. at that point you're forced to deal with this opinion as if it completely defines the person. Otherwise you risk becoming ostracized by your other friends.
I've cut off friends or been cut off by friends that I've known for over a decade over this kind of bullshit. Even though in most cases these opinions had nothing to do with our friendship.
Social media in general is a destructive force.
Facebook is a good way to reconnect with old college friends or people I used to know in Canada. beyond that is just a cliquish cauldron of hatred run by a known white supremacist who handed Donald Trump an election. Instagram is no different. The next social media craze won't be any different either.
