DC Cancels More New Age of DC Heroes Titles

Things are not looking good for DC's New Age of Heroes, as two more series have been canceled according to the company's recently revealed February solicitations. The Curse of Brimstone and Sideways will both release their final issues next year, leaving only three survivors from DC's latest initiative -- Silencer, Damage and The Terrifics.

Co-Publisher Dan DiDio and Kenneth Rocafort's Sideways will end in February with issue #13, though it's important to note that the issue is being touted as the "final chapter of his story, for now." This could be a reference to Sideways' continuing appearances in DC's Wal-Mart line of comics, or it could point to a further importance in upcoming DC events. Justin Jordan and Denys Cowan's The Curse of Brimstone will end after a two-part finale, following declining sales and lackluster reviews that have plagued the rest of the creator-driven initiative.

DC's New Age of Heroes was first announced as a new line of comics featuring brand new heroes with a focus on artist-led stories. The new line of heroes was supposed to launch after Scott Snyder and Greg Capullo's Dark Knights: Metal event, though delays in the final issues affected the releases of the new series. Despite the early hype from DC, the New Age of Heroes never found commercial or critical success even with the draw of superstar artist Jim Lee attached to The Immortal Men, which was the first of the New Age to get the axe. With the cancellation of The Unexpected in January and The Curse of Brimstone and Sideways in February, we can probably expect similar fates for Silencer and Damage, though The Terrifics could survive on the strength of the fanbase that has grown around the new team of already established characters.

A quirky love letter to the works of writer Grant Morrison while exploring the Dark Multiverse and ramifications of Metal, The Unexpected launched this past June. Of the eight titles launched this year under the New Age of DC Heroes banner, five titles remain including Damage, The Curse of Brimstone, The Terrifics, The Silencer, and Sideways. New Challengers was launched as part of the initiative but was solicited as a six-issue miniseries ending this week.
