10TB Western Digital USB 3.0 external HDD for $180

Thought about the Synology DS918+, but I use Plex and the Western Digital PR4100 has upgradeable memory and has hardware specifically setup for transcoding. So I got the 4 4tb drives that I will use 3 for raid 0 and 1 to hot-swap giving me give or take 8tb.

I just need to pull the trigger and drop 5bills for the NAS, but family and shyt around the house got me being responsible and shyt.
I run Plex as well so it was important to have hardware able to handle transcoding hence me looking to set up everything to run off of a Dell Poweredge D510 with Intel Xeon processors.

The 918 can play 4k video in plex, the nice thing about synology is they are maintenance free and compact.

Yeah I built a server with a AMD Ryzen processor, that was running Windows server 2008 and now running Ubuntu 18. Linux runs a lot better if I only runs Plex (TV, music and shows), Emby (Porn) and Wine (iTunes Home Sharing) I have been able to run them from Czech Republic via Amazon Fire TV's plex app with very little lag. To watching shows on the train on my phone

So does the WD PR4100 and it is the same form factor but slightly better processor in my opinion and the memory is upgradable

I know there are Synology units that can handle Plex but I already had the server so I'm taking advantage of the processing power

I have a 4TB drive for my PS4, this would be even better. Damn this is tempting!

do it...

price em...this is a steal...plus they throwing in a $10+ flash drive...& free shipping...

but best buy up the street going to pick mine up....

if u collect movie n music like i do ...u will have this filled in a few months...

especially when u start upgrading ....

Plus since I download tv series and movies in higher quality, the file sizes are much larger so movies that used to be 700MB in avi format are now in mp4 and mkv format and easily well over 5GB for good quality worth streaming to a large screen tv

This.

A hard drive like this filled with HD movies & TV shows, paired with the Plex app is AWESOME AS FUCK.

It is literally having your own personal Netflix. I got my file names neat and organized, too.

Good look, OP. 200 for a 10 TB is a steal. Only raggedy ass Seagate drives be that cheap. This hard drive will hold me down for the next few years.

All I need now is a plug for older TV shows and movies, I catch the new shit as soon as they drop.

check Fonz theme in the Trap....

In the BGOL days of old, when tube sites didn’t exist and homegrown had to be saved to a personal drive to be enjoyed (nor did the board have a dedicated HG section), THIS would have been the shit to have.

Shit, if you still have your collection, you can put all that shit on this drive, and put it on Plex and have your own damn Pornhub on your TV.

Dog I have about, and I'm not BS 7 Seagate drives that I need to run scans on to get old napster music and old videos off because they failed. Like you said they cheap. I'm praying my 8 TB don't go out b4 I get this WD 10 GIG my man posted. you would think I woulda learned my lesson by now :hmm:

I learned my lesson fucking with them Seagate drives. I lost well over 3TB of movies, tv shows and flicks cuz a Seagate failed on me outta no where. Some of which I was never able to recover or find again. My current externals are Western Digitals and the drives I have my RAID 5 config on in my desktop are HGBTs

I'm not as fancy. Got a probox 4 drive external with 4x1TB drives. The esata is flaky so I'm running it on usb2.0

Yep, I had two Seagates crap out on me, one external, one internal.

Had to buy a Probox and run 3-4 different recovery programs on the external. The internal wouldn't even work in the ProBox, had to buy a single enclosure just to use it.

Never again.

Them bitches always on sale for a reason.

I could NEVER fill that much storage.

Honestly, why would you want a drive that large? What if it crashes.

Nice gift for a teenager to save a lifetime full of shit, but I am like you, no way I could use that up.

It would okey if you and other family members wanted to combine or backup everything in one place though for later generations to have.

For those talking about RAID, the problem there is you need 4 times the number of drives to store the data. So, if I have 35T of data, I need at least 4 40T drives. Or am I missing something?

I have 3 NAS 8tb hds & 1 NAS 6tb hd. Id buy it. Its a must have for movie & music collectors.

Slam is posting bluray dvd's that are 10gigs.....wont take long to fill up.

It depends on the type of RAID you're running but the purpose of RAID is more about redundancy in case a drive fails than overall storage capacity

Yes, I know. I looked long and hard at RAID when the tech first dropped because I have so much rare music stored, not to mention BluRay level movies. And in my photo business, I shoot in very high resolution resulting in large file sizes. And you know when those cameras sound like machine guns? Well, all those shots add up. Anyway, it's always come down to a numbers game. The redundancy has to have somewhere to go, so you're going to need more space on your RAID them the amount of data you have. I know the newer RAID does some type of hybrid thing where different sectors are on different drives so it doesn't require as much space. But I'm getting off track. My issue has always been space. I acquire between 5 and 10G of data weekly. Not all of it stays but still. I have over 20T of storage connected right now and I have a couple of externals that I periodically use to backup.
So you see, for me, the cost of a RAID unit running 30T of storage is crazy. It's cheaper for me to just grab externals and back shit up. I really should be looking at writable BluRays. In fact, I'm going to do that now. Downside of that is it's a lot of work.

I feel ya. Only RAID that would work for you would be a RAID 0 config as that spans the storage across all drives involved. If you were to do that then you might want to invest in a DAS or NAS unit that can hold a large amount of drives. Otherwise purchasing multiple externals would be the next best thing.

Yeah, it's a helluva situation but I just keep finding so much shit to d/l. And as for hard storage, well, a burner - $130 and a 10 pack of 100G triple-layer discs - $73, so basically 75 bucks per T. Jeez. That's without the work involved. Not to mention new content is always incoming. Oh, well. lol.

Props!!! Just copped from my local BB.
Partitioned mines to use part of it as a time machine and the other to back up photo and video files.

I just got a 418play. I have 2 6tb drives in raid. Will get more Hard drives soon.

Tell your fam that it is so easy to share video with people all over the world using a NAS.

Compared to cloud storage sites or streaming options...there is no comparison.

I had a gang of 4k vids of my kids that I could never share with my folks back home.

Now, after setting up my NAS, people can watch those vids from anywhere. The 418play will also transcode on the fly. The model that you are looking at is doper though.

So......make the NAS a "family purchase" if you need to justify it :ssshhh:

But...........I am about to grab an EVGA 2080 ti, though. I dont have any excuses for that shit. lol
:ornament:

The synology's memory can also be upgraded btw

Between downloaded movies, TV Series, music, audiobooks, porn and photos I out grow a hard drive every year. When I replace it the old one becomes my back up. I've been stackin like that for 20 years. All of my data is good to go!

4k video fills 10 tb pretty easily

I see how you guys can fill all that storage. I just download the HD 1 or 2 GB copy of a movie and I generally don't keep it even though I have storage space.

There are so many streaming services that you can get most titles instantly for free without downloading. Maybe not Blueray quality, but it's good enough for me.

Yeah, that's true but I travel a lot for work and I like to take my own entertainment with me. I gave up TV decades ago. So to avoid having to depend on those shitty hotel wi-fi's I travel with a small portable external of about 4 TB with everything I need. Streaming just doesn't give me the kind of options I have with my own personal library. I'd much rather stream from sources I control instead of hoping and praying someone else's server will do right. Its sort of like how some people put everything in the cloud and just assume they will always have reliable access to it. I can't do that. I HAVE to have a phone that allows for micro-sd. That's the main reason apple can kick rocks. I gotta control my own content.

I recorded my kids doing their trick or treat thing a couple weeks ago...

That one file was 17 GB, and it has sentimental value.

I have lots of videos that I cant lose.....birth of my daughter....my wife complaining about pains while walking around the hospital before giving birth to my daughter.....my son's first steps....my daughter eating a lemon etc.

It's not about the movies but those family moments that you want to preserve.

Shit, I am still trying to find ways to backup my backups.

Sounds like you need this. Keep in mind true backup means one of the copies is off site.

Bestbuy has a sharp 65” 4k for $450 right now
And Walmart has a 55” sharp 4k for $250

They both have hdr but it won’t be any good

I have setup a Linux server with a 8 core AMD Ryzen proc that I am sharing my Movies/TV Shows/Music/Photos I have my family connecting to from Illinois to Michigan. I was also able to run it from Czech Republic with no issues. I want the NAS for better backup and less moving parts.

Nothing 4K for space reasons 1080p gives more than what is needed as far as resolution is concerned.

Usually costs $300 and the 32GB flash drive is a nice extra bonus
