MoviePass officially has some competition.

AMC has announced plans for its own movie subscription service, which despite being double the price of MoviePass, offers many additional perks.

Beginning Tuesday, the theater chain is adding a new tier to its current AMC Stubs rewards program called AMC Stubs A-List. For $19.95 per month (plus tax), members can see up to three movies per week, including access to IMAX and 3D showings, multiple movies per day, and repeat visits to previously seen movies, all things that are currently unavailable to MoviePass customers.

A-List is AMC’s counter to MoviePass, the service that allows subscribers to see one movie per day for as low as $6.95 a month. Back in January, the company, which has sought reduced ticket prices from theater chains, abruptly stopped servicing 10 large AMC theaters in Los Angeles, New York, and other major cities. The standoff ended in April with the locations once again being made available to MoviePass users.

AMC previously threatened to take legal action against MoviePass last August, when the service slashed its monthly price to $9.95 (from $15-$50). At the time, the theater chain called MoviePass a “small fringe player” with an “unsustainable” business model.

If i recall, didn't Movie Pass go to all the big chains first?

So back then it was "MoviePass (is) a “small fringe player” with an “unsustainable” business model."

Aka them niggas are gonna fail...

"To hold up they are on to something, lets copy their model." ....

Fuck AMC, and all the big theater chains

I'm team Movie Pass, but that extra charge bullshit they're doing might make me go the AMC route.

One thing about Movie Pass is I enjoy being able to go to any movie theater I want

AMC's New $20 MoviePass Competitor Sounds Like a Damn Good Deal

Movie subscription service MoviePass and theater chain AMC haven’t been on the best of terms, with the latter attempting to block the former from working in its theaters. But AMC’s answer to MoviePass will finally arrive on June 26, and to our surprise, it actually seems like it could be a great deal.

AMC has announced Stubs A-List, its movie subscription service costing $20 per month. Subscribers can watch up to three movies per week with the membership, or blow through their three-movie allotment in one day (with a two-hour buffer between each viewing). Repeat viewings are allowed, and your movie allowance resets every Friday morning. Stubs A-List unfortunately requires a three-month minimum commitment.

Instead of restricting you to standard 2D movies like MoviePass, AMC says its subscription will let you watch films in most formats, including IMAX, Dolby Cinema, and—thank goodness—“BigD.” Shows from Fathom Events and “special fan events” are not included, meaning you’ll be paying out of pocket to enjoy the opera you crave so dearly.

You’ll be able to reserve seats for up to three movies at a time, either on the web or using AMC’s app. This addresses one of the biggest gripes about MoviePass and its inconvenient ticket acquisition procedure, which requires you to be within 100 yards of your chosen theater to purchase a ticket.

Right off the bat, AMC’s offering sounds like a good deal. 12 movies per month for $20? Sounds good to me. The average movie ticket price in the U.S. has risen to over $9 according to the National Association of Theater Owners, meaning, if you’re already a big moviegoer and live near an AMC theater, Stubs A-List basically pays for itself after three flicks. Rival subscription service Sinemia offers similar perks in terms of movie formats, and lets you watch films in more than just AMC theaters, but it won’t let you watch as many films. However, if you’re a fan of a competing theater chain, such as Alamo Drafthouse, then of course the upcoming AMC subscription isn’t for you.

Yeah, I'm getting the AMC deal if Movie Pass gets too crazy

MoviePass Launches ‘Peak Pricing’ Surcharge

MoviePass has launched a “peak pricing” surcharge for the most popular titles at the most popular showtimes.

The service, which had warned subscribers in late June that peak pricing was coming, began including the surcharge on some of its showtimes on Thursday. It said such showings would be marked with a red lightning bolt icon and would cost between $2 and $6.

“Peak Pricing goes into effect when there’s high demand for a movie or showtime,” MoviePass told subscribers. “You may be asked to pay a small additional fee depending on the level of demand. You can avoid the surcharge by selecting a different showtime or movie. Over the coming weeks we’ll also be introducing Peak Pass, which will allow you to waive one peak fee per month.”

The service also said, “Note: the actual Peak Pricing surcharge will vary based on showtime and movie title.”

Ad additional statement issued later Thursday said, “Today, we began rolling out Peak Pricing in select markets with the intention of keeping our subscription service attractive while offsetting the high costs associated with heavy demand of certain films or showtimes. We are still in a testing period with this feature, and to start, members can expect a surcharge fee of anywhere between $2 and $6 dollars, depending on demand of the showtime in question.”

“Peak Pricing will roll out to all subscribers over the next few weeks; however, members on an annual or quarterly plan won’t experience the Peak Pricing feature until their membership renewal date,” it added. “In the coming weeks, we’ll also be introducing Peak Pass, which allows members to waive one peak fee per month.”

MoviePass has more than 3 million subscribers and allows customers the chance to see a movie a day for a monthly fee of $9.99. But Wall Street has been losing faith in whether MoviePass can survive by selling data about its customers and striking marketing partnerships. The issue took a major hit after a May 8 filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission that revealed it had $15.5 million in available cash at the end of April, plus $27.9 million on deposit with merchants while monthly expenses totaled $21.7 million.

The company, owned by Helios and Matheson Analytics, recently launched a $164 million bond sale, announcing that it had reached an agreement with institutional investors to issue convertible notes for that amount, as well as 20,500 shares of preferred stock.

Stock of Helios and Matheson was off 2 cents to 19 cents a share on Thursday to close at another all-time low. The issue has continued to decline in recent days in the wake of AMC’s launch last week of a discount pricing program allowing customers to see three movies a week for a $19.95 monthly fee.

In a SEC filing Thursday, Helios and Matheson said a special meeting of shareholders will be held July 23 at the Empire State Building in New York City to increase the number of the company’s authorized common stock from 500 million to 5 billion and approve a one-time reverse stock split.

Yeah, I'm thinking of AMC also. I'm going to see how it goes for Movie Pass for a couple of months with this peak pricing thing.

Interesting.... I've never really looked into MoviePass. People go to the movies that much?!!! The sell is you can go to a movie everyday. Who has time for that?

That AMC deal sounds wayyyyyy better and it's more realistic to say 3 times a week w/ unlimited access to errything.

My bro goes to the movies every week..4 movies a month= 40-56 bucks...movie pass=10 a month...you save 30-46 bucks...that's the sell

Now thanks to movie pass, amc pass was created and now you can jump ship to that if you like either way you pay less than the regular price.. Consumer wins

but wont this hurt box office gross?
cuz if you paying $20 you can go see the same movie 3x a week.
as oppose to paying $15x3,
right?

Just seen another reason why some people would go to movie pass first...amc deal you have to pay I think for a 3 month package or a 12 month package..plus it's hidden tax... So you either paying 60+ or 240+...,movie pass is 10 every month and I think you can pay $90 for the yearly subcription... So a frugal person mite like the monthly plan instead of the seasonal and yearly plan

Hey we on the verge of this idea we talked about yrs ago on here about movies being released simultaneously in the theatre and at home..the way it's going it prob happen sooner than later due to the fact of these movie passes cutting into box office figures..only time will tell

They need to just go on and have a streaming service where I don't need to go to the theater at all. I enjoy my theater room in my crib better than most theaters anyway. Lowes, AMC, and whoever need to drop the brick and mortars and just become streaming services. Granted; they'll lose out on all the overpriced popcorn money, but they'll save with not having to pay rent, upkeep, and staff....

Nevermind bootleggers would kill this shit

Or they could do both...have a streaming and theatre experience

I was thinking that, with like a delay system, hit theaters a few weeks earlier than the streaming service, but then I thought about it and the bootleggers would ruin this shit and kill this shit and take down the whole system.

moviepass is now charging people to see movies on top of the 10 buck monthly fee.

its called peak pricing and currently ranges anywhere from 2.50 to 4.50.

its a money grab because they are broke and it is pissing alot of people off including me. we all knew that the model was not sustainable. but now they are fucking over customers with strange outages right when blockbusters drop and charging these arbitrary random fees.

peak pricing was described as an extra fee for certain movies on opening weekend when theaters were selling out. it ends up that now even three week old movies are having the added fee during regular weekday showings. its bullshit and i wish i had an AMC near me cause i would cancel moviepass with the quickness and go to AMC's new program called A-List where you can actually reserve seats, not have to be at the theater to buy tickets and go to premium showings.

i would rather moviepass charge me twenty a month vs this nickel and dime bullshit for a cash grab.

if your brother goes every week in new york he is now adding at least 4.50 every time he goes to a weekend show for a new release. so he may still be coming out ahead but that bullshit peak price fee is pissing me off.

No, because the theaters get the whole ticket price from Movie Pass. Which is why they're losing money. Because they thought people would only go two or three times a month. When it's people like me who do that a lot of weekends.

They need to just go on and have a streaming service where I don't need to go to the theater at all. I enjoy my theater room in my crib better than most theaters anyway. Being at home doesn't beat the movie theater experience if you're a social person.

They can afford to give you the movie at reduced prices cause they figure over 2 to 3 hours, you are gonna get some concessions, especially if on a date or with family.

AMC is paying less than Movie Pass. AMC is only paying the money owed to the studio, because the movie was going to run regardless of how full it is.

I'm keep moviepass til the wheels fall off (only a matter of time til they go under).
havent been hit with surge pricing and 10 dollars is still a great value

but I am happy MP changed the game and will do AMC when MP dies

Did you check it this weekend? I noticed it Friday through Sunday for anything besides the early morning show.

Thing is THEATE CHAINS HATE movie pass and surprisingly it isnt cause of MONEY.

It seems there STILL is a whole lot of confusion and VERY pad customer service and reps.

And to be fair

moviepass HAS been f*cking around a lot with policy and service changes.

I guess OVERALL the headache is worth it

but having a THEATER supported program (although those little hidden fees gonna f*ck it up quick, they REALLY need to rethink that) I think the public will TRUST it more

I think the BIG thing is reserved seating...

Just off THAT alone?

Apparently the people are willing to pay the hidden AMC fees.
