15-Year-Old Who Graduated From High School With 4.5 GPA May Not Be Able to Go to College After He’s Turned Down for Scholarships

Ishmale Powell is a little more than smart. The 15-year-old prodigy graduated from Page High School in Greensboro, N.C., about two weeks ago with a smooth 4.5 GPA and seemed like a shoo-in for college as he worked toward his goals.

But Ishmale, who comes from a single-parent household, has hit a serious wall in his journey after applying for several scholarships, none of which have given him a positive response. That lack of money may put his future on hold, WFMY-TV reports.

When Ishmale graduated, he was all smiles. The teen had skipped two grades and taken high school classes while still in middle school, all of which set him on track to graduate so early.

“It is unbelievable. It came so fast and I just can’t believe it; it feels great,” he said.

The teen, who wants to be an astrophysicist, is headed to the University of North Carolina at Charlotte in the fall, where he intends to major in computer engineering and minor in aerospace engineering.

“Going at such a young age, it might be difficult for me, but I think I am ready,” he said.

But the finances that it will take to make sure Ishmale is set up for success are still not in hand. Every single scholarship he has applied to has turned him down, the news station notes.

“That’s really worrying me. I’m not sure how I’m going to pay for tuition or anything because I come from a single-parent home and it’s been rough,” he acknowledged.

Ishmale’s father, Shawn Powell, is on a fixed disability income, and while the 15-year-old has $3,000 from the Pell Grant program and $6,000 from the UNC system for his first year secured, Powell cannot afford the remaining $40,000 needed for room, board and other fees.

So the doting dad has decided to move to Charlotte so his son can attend school from home. But there are still other costs to account for.

“I have been always on my son real hard and trying to make sure he does the right thing,” Powell said. “I’m trying not to think about the stuff now, but it’s really real because he’s just walked across the stage.”

The family is holding out for one more option, from Say Yes of Guilford County. Donnie Turlington, the interim director of Say Yes Guilford County, says that it is possible that Ishmale’s age and the fact that he skipped his junior year may play a factor in his lack of scholarship options.

However, Turlington has reviewed Ishmale’s case and has scheduled a meeting with the family.

“High-performing students like him, we want to find a way that we can make sure we can break down the cost barriers involved with the college,” he said.

Meanwhile, Ishmale has his fingers crossed.

“I just pray that a blessing will happen,” he said.

that's the thing SOMETHING doesn't make sense.

Yeah, and the only reason I say that is I only had a ~3.6/4.0 and got enough scholarship money to take care of alil more than half of my college cost.

:dunno::dunno:

I just don't see how that's a negative. If you got the smarts, then it shouldn't really matter. I met a couple 15 yr olds in college that we're in my business classes, lol.

I just asked a friend of mine who is a high school principal she said the age COULD POSSIBLY be the reason

a great person to ask would be Bomani Jones.

I would tweet him but I cant find a twitter link to this story.

He'll make it. Most schools guidance counselors suck. They should be experts in college financing and admissions.

Su'm ain't right though. We don't have the full story.
We do have the full story unfortunately. The high end black kids get accepted to the PWI's but no money, they get money and acceptance from the HBCU's and shit on it. Now he wanna pull the single parent card to get money from the PWI. Best of luck brotha.

Damn shame, that is crazy a 4.5 gets you nothing, no type of scholarship period, Jesus, I’d love to see the better candidates than him

wonder why he didn’t want to go to an hbcu? I’m sure he would have gotten a full ride, but it’s his choice

:eek2: Please tell me this is a typo

Total on-campus living cost of attendance is $23,754 per the schools website. All that adding on cost is either media spin or they’re expecting the kid to leave in luxury.

I just re-read; the story says the dad decided to move to Charlotte; I saw no mention of mom; the cost must be for out of state tuition which makes no sense because dude graduated from an NC high school; something is missing in this story. I wonder WHEN did he start applying for scholarships?

True, I guess we're not hearing the whole story. What's the Sats/ACTs look like? How are the extracurriculars? Volunteering?

A 4.5 on a 4.0 scale should get you money assuming the school is legit.

Did it say anything about a 4.0 scale ?

Some schools use a 5.0 scale..In any event even if that is the case its a great achievement to graduate at 15 with

How many scholarships did he apply for ? Big money scholarships are highly competitive because everybody wants them.

Thats why the scholly app is good as it lists even obscure scholarships

NOPE

and as a parent of 2 kids?

:hithead:

I remember NYU was like $25K before room and board and shit like that back in 1998. That shit is damn near $50K in state.

God knows what it's going to be 10-20 years down the road. That's why I stay pushing a ball in my baby's hands, and I'm a start applying to work for colleges to get that family free ride shit.

Hmmm.

Back when I attended Winston Salem State, a girl that graduated from Carver High School enrolled at just 15 years old on a full ride. She was not allowed to stay on campus because of her age, but she was living in Winston Salem in the first place, so it wasn’t an inconvience at all.

My colleague just had twin girls awarded a full ride to UNC Charlotte, but they were standard age students (17 or 18 years old). They also had a high GPA, but they went to a magnet school.

The kid wants to major in computer engineering and aroespace engineering.

As an NC A&T Aggie and Winston Salem State Univeristy alumni, I can promise you those two HBCUs would offer him a full ride and would still offer him a full ride without question.

A&T has the programs he want to major in, so why not go there and continue to stay in Greensboro? Moving to Charlotte where the cost of living is higher to go to a school where they can barely pay the tuition is really suspect to me.

So the details on why he is possibly being turned down is interesting. Another reason places would turn you down for a scholarship given that you have a high GPA would be low SAT scores (which was no mentioned). And I’m against that standardized test, but it does play a factor.

If he is trying to stay on any university campus at the age of 15, then that’s not happening. At least not in North Carolina’s school systems.

Other reasons would be, did he apply late for these scholarships? Most of these high end PWIs already have enrollement for the fall done by January or February. I know this because I got denied from UNC Charlotte partly because I applied so late. If he applied late, then it likely he missed the boat because scholarships have already been given out since the fall semester is right around the corner.

I know these are his choices, but it’s my opinion with consideration on what he wants to major in, is to apply to NC A&T where he can remain local, get a full ride, and lower cost of living.

Also, didn’t he fill out a FAFSA? He should have because that also will cover the cost of school, even if it’s loaned money. I get not wanting to be in student loan debt, but my family couldn’t afford to pay for school and I didn’t get any scholarships. I’m in student loan debt, but it is what it is. I graduated and I have a career.

But we talking about room & board, not tuition. No way a public NC univ (outside maybe Chapel Hill) charges in-state kids that much to stay on campus for 1 year

Exactly. No UNC public university cost that much for in-state students. Not even Chapel Hill.

40k is at least two years with of tuition and room & board.
