My guess, Strange only saw 1 way they would win when he looked in the future and in that one way Tony had to live. He was the key. Maybe it's seeing Pete die that sparks something but if Tony died, the one way Strange saw wouldn't work.

It had to be one of the outcomes strange saw when he viewed into the future while on titan pre thanos. The outcome had to feature Tony because strange was not willing to save Tony or Peter when it came to the time gem when they saved him from Maw.

This was the best comic book movie I've seen. Marvel has balls made of Adamantium to kill all of those heroes. Sucks we have to wait a year for the next movie. Thor's new hammer is great. I was surprised that Black Panther died.
