Lil Yachty funk flex freestyle

we don't get nothin in a finished product in this era. Everything's recorded. That's how this generation is growing up. I gotta say. If his first freestyle was a -5. This was a 3. Which is improvement.
He's on FUNK FLEX. A national platform. This ain't a recording of him on the street or even a local radio show. That's the difference. There are plenty of others in his age group who CAN do this. He can't. And for that, I'm saying, get off the places where REAL ones do it , until you can. If you never get there, keep selling your trash songs , and you'll never hear from me. But when you come on HERE, I'm gonna call it what it is. If he don't like it, he's welcome to get better. You can applaud "improvement" all ya want.

Times ain't changed. Niccas been doin writtens. It's only a handful of rappers that went off top. Common and even snoop go off top. Can't speak for the others.

In most of those cases they at least memorized the lines. And the obvious writtens at least used the same flow they usually do. Yachty had 2 phones sitting on the table and recited them. And his flow was completely different. It is like he performed a song impersonating a completly different rapper.

I expected way worse, I found myself trying to understand what he was talking about etc. It was light on substance but it didn’t sound bad.

For us who grew up closer to the art freestyling was off the top. To the point where you had to point out something in the here and now to let cats know it was off the dome. When we wrote we would just say we wrote a rhyme. We freestyled pretty much every night drinking 40s lol.

Now freestyling is just rhyming with no real subject and seems that popular culture can identify with that way of ‘freestyling’

Just my opinion..

For those of us who grew up even closer to the art it wasn't. The "off the top" shit started in the 90s but the word freestyle was used much earlier than that, as refereneed by Kane

It ain't like grandmaster Caz or bizzy B or run DMC or Kool Moe dee- none of those guys were "going off the top". They wrote rhymes. If they had a verse that had not made it to a song , and they spit it over a beat, they were FREESTYLING.

But really The word can mean all of that. When you see the word , you can just tell what is meant by what you actually see happening.

I’m just speaking from my experience. I grew up in Patterson, Mitchell, and Douglas housing. Later Esplanade, and Gunhill. Each area called off the top, Freestyling.

Back in the 80s even when the older cats was out rhyming they was coming off the top and always said we out here freestyling. I think it was easier commercially to say freestyling was written and about a variety of topics.

As I got older and saw freestyling written down in print on albums or later the Internet I use to be like wait he not freestyling.

But like you said everybody has there own interpretation, including Kane. I know even now when I go back and us old ninjas rhyme off the top we still say freestyling.

Back to the young cat I don’t think he did as bad as I expected
