It was short sighted for her to not take the deal and then pop off. Her buzz was nil. Her problem is she thinks the game is still a talent show and it's not. It's a popularity contest. If she could've crushed her Netflix special it would've built back up her buzz and she could've flipped that into bigger and better specials.
Name any other entertainer in the history of any genre who could be contractually obligated to completely halt their career and "not work for 2 years" after filming one 30 minute performance. I could see if she was being locked into a long term extended contract playing one specific character, but otherwise this allegation doesn't even make common sense! So why does Monique and Sidney keep repeating that obviously absurd half-truth?

- Because Monique isn't pretty she's attacked a lot more than would be the case. Especially here on BGOL where so many dudes in here have a hatred for Black women
- Monique's husband is hard to work with and has been a detriment to her career for awhile. Thats a known act in the business.
- I saw when Monique posted up the details of her contract. Netflix saying they own the content and that she can't use her material for TWO YEARS is insane. People in here forget thats how comedians make their money....by touring. Its not easy to come up with enough new material for a 1 hour show so that portion of the deal was bullshit.

Her legend is not equal to that of Chris Rock and Dave Chappelle. When they ask comedians who the greatest living standup comedian is, comics say Chappelle and Rock, never Mo'Nique.
That thing about the contract is not uncommon with specials like that. It makes sense too. The network hosting the special wants exclusive content.

eddie griffin makes around 3 million a year. idk what monique makes but stand up comedian with a name make good bank. artie lang was making 50,000 a weekend after falling off ,not being on howard stern ( he was making 80k -100k a weekend while on stern).
You're right which why I said "legendary Black female comic" and relatively speaking she IS. Now what that means for her ability to draw is not the same as comics that are considered legendary overall(not just to a specific audience) in stand-up and that's the difference between Monique and Chappelle/Rock. She is either willfully trying to ignore that or she's simply out of touch with her current status as a comic.
