Hmm. She has no powers and no 'suit' al la Iron Man and Ant Man. She doesn't even have a bow. I gotta agree with TimRock, I just don't see it as a two hour movie. idk, Fonz, I don't really see her origins as being all that interesting either. We've already seen that type of stuff a dozen times. How long can it take to tell that story? 20 minutes?
She's always nice to look at in that catsuit but, really, how long has she been on screen compared to the other characters? Not very long. She did work well with Cap in WS but that was still a comparatively short amount of screen time.

Marvel’s Standalone ‘Black Widow’ Movie Gains Momentum With Jac Schaeffer Writing

Marvel is finally pushing ahead with the highly anticipated “Black Widow” standalone movie starring Scarlett Johansson, with Jac Schaeffer penning the script.
Sources say this is still very early development, as the film has no greenlight, but naming a writer is the closest the studio has come to moving forward on a standalone pic. Marvel President Kevin Feige met with several candidates before tapping Schaeffer, and Marvel execs met with Johansson to discuss what they wanted from a “Black Widow” writer.
Schaeffer is an up and coming scribe who broke out with her Black List script “The Shower,” a comedy about an alien invasion during a baby shower which caught the eye of Anne Hathaway, who quickly attached herself to star in the pic.
Hathaway was so impressed with her work that she soon tapped Schaeffer to write “Nasty Women,” a new female-centric take on “Dirty Rotten Scoundrels” that also stars Hathaway.
Marvel had no comment.
Fans of the character have been pushing for her to get own movie since she first appeared in “Iron Man 2” and with the latest phase of Marvel films coming to a close, Marvel saw this as the best time to move forward with the project.
Johansson has appeared as the character in six films, the next one being this summer’s “Avengers: Infinity War.”
Schaeffer is repped by Verve and Writ Large.

Her male counterparts — Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr.), Hulk (Edward Norton), Thor (Chris Hemsworth), Captain America (Chris Evans), and Spider-Man (Tom Holland) — have each gotten standalone film treatments over the franchise’s 10-year history, with most of them headlining at least three films.

But with Marvel’s Phase 3 ending with Captain Marvel and Avengers 4, it’s safe to say that it’ll be part of Marvel’s Phase 4, along with Spider-Man: Far From Home, Guardians of the Galaxy 3, Black Panther 2, and other projects that are currently in the works. The Phase 4 films are expected to begin hitting theaters in 2019.

The new poster was designed by BossLogic, celebrating the recent director announcement. The poster features the silhouette of a Black Widow Spider with Widow's trademark pistols in full view. It also features a cast list, which includes Scarlett Johansson, Samuel L. Jackson, Sebastian Stan, Jeremy Renner, and Cobie Smulders.

The move caps off a search that lasted over half a year as the studio met with over 70 directors in order to find its ideal candidate. A female filmmaker was the priority even as the search stalled at one point and the studio looked at male helmers.
The hunt narrowed in June with Amma Asante (Belle, A United Kingdom) and Maggie Betts (Novitiate) being the finalists alongside Shortland. Melanie Laurent (Galveston) and Kimberly Peirce (Boys Don't Cry) were also in the next-to-final mix.

We’ve had a few weeks of onlineindignation following the announcement that Scarlett Johansson would be producing and starring in a movie about Dante Tex Gill, a 1970s/1980s Pittsburgh massage parlor operator and organized crime figure who was born female but assumed the identity of a man. But as of an hour ago, Scarlett Johansson has bowed out of the project. The outcry came over the notion that Johansson would be playing a real-life character who was apparently a transgender man. After an initial statement where she (through her rep) told those opposed to be directed to “Jeffrey Tambor, Jared Leto, and Felicity Huffman’s reps for comment,” the actress will no longer star in Rupert Sanders’s Rub and Tug.
Oh, and Marvel just hired Cate Shortland to direct the long-in-development solo Black Widow movie. If you think those two developments are connected, well, you’re probably right.
Even if we give Johansson the benefit of the doubt that she merely saw the true-life crime melodrama (think American Made) as a juicy role about a “tough woman” who assumed a male identity to succeed in a male-dominated arena, the outcry has been fast and furious: Tokyo drift. Speaking of Tokyo Drift, couple this with the controversy over her playing the lead in last year’s Ghost in the Shell adaptation, where she technically played a Japanese woman whose mind and soul was transported into the body of a white lady, and I imagine the actress (or those around her) decided it wasn’t worth it.
There was little chance of Johansson scoring awards consideration or even much acclaim unless the movie turned out to be a stone-cold masterpiece. Even then, the controversy would have become the prime narrative around the otherwise run-of-the-mill studio programmer which would need positive media attention to survive alongside the tentpoles. Whether it would have made any money is an open question (Dallas Buyers Club, with a huge Oscar boost, earned $55m worldwide on a $5m budget in 2013/2014), but it wasn’t worth the possibility of doing PR-related damage to the Black Widow movie.
Sure, general audiences wouldn’t have cared about (or had known much about) the Rub and Tug outcry. But it’s something that would have followed the actress on the publicity trail and may well have been a two-strikes-you’re-out scenario for the very sort of progressive/uber-woke online fans who Marvel and Walt Disney were counting on to sell the heck out of the Black Widow movie. It wouldn’t be a fatal distraction, but it’s not great when you finally make your Black Widow movie and your longtime star has essentially been (justly or not) “canceled” by the geek media at large.
So, for better or worse, even (again) giving the actress the benefit of the doubt that she really dropped out because it was the right thing to do, the comic book superhero movie took precedent over the adult-skewing crime melodrama. If more adults actually went to the movies these days to see flicks like Blow or The Infiltrator, this might be a different conversation. But even with the notion that Johansson would like to get into the year-end awards pool before she gets replaced by the next batch of hot young things (no, that’s not fair and it’s not right, but it still is), the outcry over this possible box office flop doing long-term damage to her image in the MCU wasn’t worth it.
It would be deeply ironic (and not surprising) if the film gets made with a transgender male in the lead role only to flop upon release. The internet is great at being "here for it" on social media in terms of certain movies and then ignoring them in theaters. Fair or not, movie stars still matter for movies like this. Part of the problem, I would argue, is less about Johansson getting to play a transgender person in a major movie and more about the (general) lack of opportunities for transgender actors and actresses to play characters who aren’t necessarily defined by their transgender status (and thus become “stars”). I’d argue this specific sort of casting would be less of an issue absent the utter lack of parity that exists in the industry.
So thus ends, for now, the controversy over Scarlett Johansson playing Dante “Tex” Gill in Rub and Tug. And, coincidentally, it happened just one day after Marvel made good on their promise to find a female director for the solo Black Widow movie. I’m not sure why there is a rule declaring that nearly all female-led action/superhero movies (Wonder Woman, Captain Marvel, Atomic Blonde, Red Sparrow, etc.) have to be period pieces and/or prequels, but that’s a conversation for another day. Black Widow Movie Rumored To Feature Y2K Bug
The Black Widow movie may tackle the Y2K bug according to a new rumor. Scarlett Johansson's Russian spy-turned-S.H.I.E.L.D. agent Natasha Romanoff, aka Black Widow, is finally getting her long overdue solo film. Cate Shortland is set to direct with the script written by Jac Schaeffer. No official release date has been confirmed but many are convinced that the movie is slated to hit theaters in 2020, with production possibly beginning next May.
Not much is known regarding the film's narrative but Natasha playing a pivotal role in the famed franchise since her introduction in 2010's Iron Man 2 leaves no workable gap in the timeline that would accommodate a possible side story for her. Given that, Black Widow will be a prequel, more likely set before she was recruited by S.H.I.E.L.D. and during her days as a ruthless Russian spy. That means her confirmed film doesn't necessarily mean she will survive the upcoming events of Avengers 4.

The Black Widow movie may tackle the Y2K bug according to a new rumor. Scarlett Johansson's Russian spy-turned-S.H.I.E.L.D. agent Natasha Romanoff, aka Black Widow, is finally getting her long overdue solo film. Cate Shortland is set to direct with the script written by Jac Schaeffer. No official release date has been confirmed but many are convinced that the movie is slated to hit theaters in 2020, with production possibly beginning next May.
Not much is known regarding the film's narrative but Natasha playing a pivotal role in the famed franchise since her introduction in 2010's Iron Man 2 leaves no workable gap in the timeline that would accommodate a possible side story for her. Given that, Black Widow will be a prequel, more likely set before she was recruited by S.H.I.E.L.D. and during her days as a ruthless Russian spy. That means her confirmed film doesn't necessarily mean she will survive the upcoming events of Avengers 4.

The plot and setting of Johansson's movie have yet to be revealed, but it is sure to feature plenty of action. After the experience Hardy gained with director Christopher McQuarrie on Fallout, he can hopefully help elevate the fight scenes even more. Since Black Widow is a spy that specializes in hand to hand combat and shootouts, there shouldn't be too much in terms of CGI when it comes to the action either, so Hardy's input and execution on filming the fights should actually have a chance to shine here. But, his ability goes well beyond the action, so there's reason to believe that Black Widow will, at the very least, be a great looking movie.
