Worst NYC fire' in 25 years kills at least 12, injures 4 people

New York (CNN)At least 12 people, including a child, were killed in a fire Thursday night at a five-story apartment building in the Bronx, one of New York City's boroughs, officials said. The cause of the blaze is under investigation.

Mayor Bill de Blasio called it the "worst fire tragedy in this city in at least a quarter century."
Four people were critically injured and others were hurt, the mayor said. He added that it's possible that "we may lose others as well."

Firefighters respond to a building fire Thursday, December 28 in the Bronx borough of New York.

"This will rank as one of the worst losses of life to a fire in many, many years," de Blasio said in a Thursday press conference.

The fire started on the first floor and spread quickly, said the city's Fire Commissioner Daniel Nigro. The victims, ranging in age from 1 to over 50, died on various floors of the apartment building.

The first call about the fire came at 6:51 p.m. ET and the New York City Fire Department (FDNY) responded within three minutes, Nigro said.

Firefighters work at the scene of a deadly fire on Prospect Avenue in the Bronx.

"This tragedy is, without question, historic in its magnitude," he said. "Our hearts go out to every family who lost a loved one here and everyone fighting for their lives."
Shocked residents and family members stood outside the building in frigid temperatures, waiting for news. A local school was opened to shelter those who were displaced by the fire.

Mayor Bill de Blasio called it the "worst fire tragedy in this city in at least a quarter century."

A woman, who declined to share her full name with CNN affiliate WPIX, stood anxiously on the street as firefighters wheeled victims out. She said the last text she had gotten from her mother, who lives in the building, was that she was trapped in her third floor apartment.
The walk-up building contained 29 units, according to public property records. CNN attempted to reach the listed property owner several times.
Since 2004, the city received four complaints about the building, which didn't appear to be fire-related. The latest complaint entered Thursday was from the FDNY requesting a structural stability inspection after the deadly, five-alarm fire.

At least 12 people were rescued and are expected to survive, the mayor said. By the time the officials spoke around 10 p.m. ET, the fire had been put out and the building was being searched.

"We are closely monitoring the devastating fire in the Bronx. As always we are thankful for our first responders. Our thoughts are with the victims and their families tonight," New York Governor Andrew Cuomo tweeted.

Until NY will pressure and prosecute the landlords/building owners to inspect and update the electrical outlets and or systems (and water heaters since the age of the buildings leans towards radiators)........this will happen every winter....

Don't be surprised if it's candles or cigarettes.
Investigators are pointing towards a natural gas explosion in a first floor apartment........this is why as a firefighter.....you learn quickly not to talk about the cause of a fire at the scene...with anyone....you let the investigators do their jobs...and the incident commander talk with the press !!!

Our hearts and thoughts are with you right now, The Bronx New York. Allow me to speak for everyone here in the UK, and send you our deepest condolences. Rest in Peace to all the Lives lost. Broke our hearts to hear children were also killed. R.I.P

This is very sad...I was out in the freezing temperatures last nite saying how cold it was. and to hear about this, reading how the amount of people who died kept increasing throughout the night.I hate hearing about lost lives and people losing their homes especially at this time of the year.

Sadly this is worse than what I heard yesterday. An entire complex burned down and they lost their homes. Its cold as all hell i made sure I've donated. R.I.P to the babies and kids and everyone who suffered a family or pet lose this year.

:smh: in this society incidents like this should not happen. just saw an episode of most expensivist where they are selling air/oxygen in a can. instead of being mandated to have an extinguisher in every unit/apartment it should be required to have a device that covers your nose/mouth so you can at least survive while being to be rescued.

I just read that it was a 3 yr old playing with his mothers stove

They're saying a 3 year old started the blaze by playing with a stove! :smh:

This is EXACTLY why I refused to live in ANY multi family dwelling!

If I die in a dwelling fire, it's NOT going to be because of some kid playing with fire or a unit with overloaded outlets or someone trying to fry a turkey in their apartment that wasn't fully thawed.

Fuck that!... I like my single family home!

Extinguishers wouldn't do shit for a gas explosion .... or the aftermath ... :smh: ....at that point ur probably pissing on a forest fire !!!

Heartfelt condolences to all who have lost a family member, personal belongings or who will become homeless as a result of this tragedy....

As a survivor of 2 fires, I continually preach the importance of Home/apt insurance to all.... nothing will replace a lost one or family heirlooms, nothing... a simple policy will help tremendously during untimely events. Tragedy’s can strike at any notice to anyone.

I guarantee the mother of that child is someone who shouldn’t have kids. Either some third world South American broad or some single ghetto mother named shaniqua or some shit. It’s the same shit all the time. Some dumb bitch not watching her kids and niggas lose lives and everything else
