They asked me for some more KYC information when I processed a withdrawal. They put it through but said they would need to verify source of funds next time.. so they wanted to see my trade history. I straight up told them that shit was way too invasive. I would just use another exchange.

I move my coins in small amounts man. For example, I once moved 40k off an exchange in 2k increments.

No, 2,000 in crypto from place to place. Shit, when I cashed out my original to just play with house money, I did way less than 2k from place to place.
I don't own a hardware wallet, but they are good investments to help diversify where you store your crypto. If you don't have a bitpay card, get one. You can pull 3k a day from an ATM with them. 10k a day spending limit on the card. So you can pull out tax money and spend on major purchases that you might want at the same time.

I thought Bitfinex didn't want US citizens period.
Down the road I can see Coinbase, Gemini or some other exchange becoming the crypto banks in the US. Centralization may not be what crypto was about, but I'd rather have easier and faster ways to buy, deposit and withdraw without all the bullshit.
