Spike Lee Will Make a She’s Gotta Have It Series for Netflix / Discussion Thread

Ain’t no way Nola would have me in a three way rotation....

No if it was Rhihana, Beyoncé, or Alicia Keys, then that’s different

Better than I thought it would be, I'm at episode five now

I like how they updated it for today by throwing in Opal

Caught a couple episodes ....I’ve always enjoyed Spike Lee’s visual storytelling.

He makes black people and black communities look beautiful. The topics they’re tackling are important and done artistically.

Not bad so far

That's because we are beautiful, even in all of our flaws. Like, as much as New Orleans can be grimy af, it's still so beautiful because it's black and authentic.

Turned it off midway thru the 3rd episode. I just couldn't do it
Damn. She looks good, but is one of the most annoying characters I've seen on a show. Was about to turn it off after she went batshit over the black dress. Who the fuck could put up with her. :smh:

She's idealistic, naive, and stubborn as fuck. Maybe shit will change. Only midway through. Just background noise while I do other shit.

I'm up to episode 5. Pretty good so far. Love the music that they play throughout.

Why they got Fat Joe sounding like Tracy Morgan though?

Agreed... But everyone in the show is an exaggerated caricature. That's just Spikes style.

Netflix Renews She’s Gotta Have It For Season 2

The Netflix small-screen re-imagining of the 1986 movie She’s Gotta Have It has now been officially renewed for season 2. The series, like the film, is about a young woman trying to balance her job, her friends, and her three lovers, and her search to stay true to herself. DeWanda Wise stars as Nola Darling, juggling the rich and handsome Greer Childs (Cleo Anthony), the alpha-male investment banker Jamie Overstreet (Lyriq Bent), and b-boy bike messenger Mars Blackmon (Anthony Ramos).

She’s Gotta Have It, with its progressive polyamorist lead, is still a groundbreaking concept and the first season was critically acclaimed and even won an award from the African-American Film Critics Association. Depite only premiering on Netflix in November, the series has already been confirmed for a second season.

The confirmation comes via Instagram, as both Spike Lee and DeWanda Wise posted videos celebrating the return of She’s Gotta Have It. Spike Lee included the announcement in his video posted for New Year’s Eve, along with his wife, Tonya Lewis Lee, where they wish followers Happy New Year before Lee announces the second season and thanks the fans. Wise posted her video on January 1st, with the caption “Back ta werq! Season is OFFICIAL!!! Can’t wait to return to BK. Congrats to aaallll us. #HappyNewYear #ShesGottaHaveIt ”.

Given the success of the first season of She’s Gotta Have It, it’s not too surprising that there will be a season two. She’s Gotta Have It has been praised for including polyamorous characters and a predominantly black cast, two things which are not about to change anytime soon. Wise’s portrayal of Nola Darling is also a big hit, as Nola is a complicated, passionate and outspoken woman and Wise really does her justice.

With season one of She’s Gotta Have It only ten episodes long, the fans were definitely left wanting more, and a second season promises to deliver. Not only is there more of Nora’s own story to tell, but the stories of a unique Brooklyn neighborhood, gentrification, success and its definition in New York, and plenty of other themes in the series mean that there is plenty more to explore.

At the moment, no premiere date or additional details about season two of She’s Gotta Have It has been revealed, although it’s likely that the second season will have a similar length to the first. As a comedy/drama series with little to no CGI to add in post, and a short season length, we’re hoping that the next installment lands on Netflix sometime this year.

Very solid show. Women will love how liberating it is. Dope to see the original Nola show up at the art show. Being a Fort Greene native, the visuals hit home. Oh....

Dewanda Wise is fine than a motherfucker

mann look here she is nice then a mugg-and her legs are worth a million a piece...

Finished season 2 and Spike really does drag out 10min of plot into 30min shows with all the useless tributes to Brooklyn.
Season was more about her career and her friendships with people rather than her sexual identity and relationships which is good that they were able to move past the source film and expand.

Opal is so damn controlling. She really is the authoritative mother for Nola.
Hopefully Mars will actually grow up cause he was extra annoying this season living as a man child.
Glad that Greer was limited but his Amber Rose looking girl was fine.

Man the first episode was so stupid at times that we have no desire to watch the rest of the season...does it get better?

Season two moved away from the sexual aspects into a lot of different arenas...

Living in a city that is losing it's soul and culture to gentrification, certain things really hit home for me.. Puerto Rico was presented beautify and I liked seeing Mars and Nola's relationship move away from sexual to platonic in a smooth and mature manner but on the other hand something seemed to be missing. I'll have to watch it again sometime before Summer is out.

Kennedy Yanko was playing herself basically.

Most of the artists on the show are real artists

I figured as much since the pretentiousness of those characters couldn't come from regular actors but full blown artists.
Nola balancing her life in the art world and her normal friendships was an interesting aspect that they really hinted at during the season and really came to ahead in the last episode with her conversation with Mecca about her art piece.

I watched she's got to have it, I'm about three or four episodes in and I'm loving it so far. It's a beautiful story about a woman piecemealing men to get her perfect man. The men don't like it but they deal. Men are possessors, we don't like to share our big possessions, but in this case they deal because each hopes to eventually end up with her...and she's gorgeous.

But this here from Spike: "Here’s the thing: Brooklyn’s always going to be in you. Jay-Z and Beyoncé, they moved to L.A. They got a lot of homes. But no one’s ever going to be able to say Jay-Z’s not Brooklyn because he’s not in the Marcy Projects, you know? The goal is to get out of the projects! Who wants to stay? The goal is to get out, and he’s done it. I mean, let me reframe it: The goal should be to get out of the projects."

Dope. All true
