The people liked that song and got it poppin. She was popular on IG and dropped mixtapes and countless vids, nobody gave a shit about her or her music. She wasn't taken seriously.

She dropped that song and the streets fucked with it, they made it popular.

Now getting to number 1, that probably did involve payola.

understand she started popping in NY before Bodack... the songs / mixtapes before that were getting traction here.

no doubt the streets fucked with Bodack...
but
It took a team online and money for "promoters" to get DJs to spin Bodack in various venues,
(Payola part 1)
Cardi worked the record at appearances interviews and spot dates
(Payola part 2)
all of this happened in multiple cities.
The song connected -
girls in the major cities were able to sing along word for word weeks before it first charted on Billboard

But it took money and organization for that happen

Atlantic ? - they were late - all they did was step in, put the cherry on top to help push it up the charts
(Payola part 3)

Funny thing is Atlantic execs saw Cardi perform the song and shut down summer jam in NYC
And they still didn't push the record

She had a strong buzz before Bodak Yellow, though.

I agree and respect you you said but.....

The record company who has millions to push her record didn’t push her record, it’s because they didn’t believe in her.

She must have a GREAT team! I need her team

She had a strong buzz before Bodak Yellow, though.
She was popular by being on IG and the show, nobody gave a shit about t her music.

Exactly, she was on a nationally televised, successful tv show.

That’s true, and on that show a DJ Self chose to work with the white girl rapper instead of Cardi because Cardi was wack.

yeah, man, plus she had her own tour called Underestimated in 2016; she was grinding.....

I admit she was grinding. Many artist are “Grinding”, they just never make it big.

she was hotter than the show by the time she left...
but thats not nearly enough to get a #1 record

Agreed

They did care about music immediately as soon as her mixtapes dropped, she even had her own tour in 2016 called Underestimated.

Peep this, this is a clip from her Underestimated tour. So all of these people in the audience is a "Nobody"?

Maybe I'm just stuck on the word random @Picasso. I just can't call her success random when a year prior to her hit, she was on a popular/hit tv show.

Now Lil yachty and/or Dram's success, I would consider random. Those 2 just came from outta nowhere with a couple of popular songs (with no real backing or major push) and now they're in sprite commercials.

they ain't random either - all that shit costs money to break through

Music is a business, like Whoo Kid said if a Jew or a drug dealer doesn’t think they can make money off you, or you can help them make money it’s not going to happen. I really don’t think all these mumble rappers got on from their talent, or lyrical prowess. Shit they mumble.

 In the few times I've heard her speak she seemed functionally retarded.
on the real, she actually be on some real ass shit. I can see why people like her. And I hate most ratchets. But she's got a real cool perspective on shit.

Nahh, she's smart & she's speaking straight to the heart of a constituency; she's like the people's champ.
It's true man. Squares can't understand her properly.

YAtchy has major backinh

define "break through"

What all has to happen?
breakthrough... at the basic -for an aspiring artist if the music resonates with your people and parts of the community -
growing a fan base that wants to support and spend $,
building general awareness of your music and brand in your community
eventually getting access/ invites to media platforms that reach wider in your community and other communities like yours
eventually catching a hit that resonates beyond your community
Progressively get access to larger performance venues and media platforms

Some artists aren't interested in making commercial singles - they don't need to breakthrough
They now make money streaming
and they can make an ok living off of only their community, word of mouth and festivals
