NBA suspends Shaun Livingston for a Ref head-butting...WTF

Shaun Livingston and referee Courtney Kirkland suspended
After Sunday’s altercation between the point guard and ref, both parties have received suspensions
Shaun Livingston was ejected during the Golden State Warriors Sunday beatdown of the Miami Heat. The incident that led to him getting ejected - going forehead to forehead with a referee, and making contact - usually earns an automatic suspension.

And a suspension it earned indeed. Livingston has been suspended for one game, and will serve his punishment tonight, against the New Orleans Pelicans.

However, he wasn’t the only person getting suspended. Courtney Kirkland, the referee involved in the incident, has been suspended for one week.

The incident left many people questioning Kirkland’s role in the dispute. Livingston certainly initiated things by approaching Kirkland, but the contact was quite arguably created by Kirkland. Apparently, the league office felt that Kirkland played a strong role in the contact.

Warriors’ sideline reporter Kerith Burke had a pretty funny reaction to the news, noting that Kirkland was incorrect in his post-game assessment incident. Kirkland told reporters after the game that, “Shaun Livingston was ejected for making physical contact with me . . . that’s basically it.”

Livingston’s absence won’t really be noticed, as he was likely going to have a rest day against the Pelicans. However, he’ll lose one game’s worth of salary for his role in the dispute.

Still, it’s good to see that the NBA is holding the referee responsible.

Whole lotta cheddar
That’s about $93K he would forfeit for the suspension based on his annual salary for ’17/18. Assuming all salary is related to 82 regular season. Not sure about incentives/bonuses in that total.

I know these guys make a lot of money but damn that is a lot of money to forfeit.

The NBA shouldn’t schedule Kirkland to ref any games at Oracle.
This guy was a crew chief?

Shit like this is why people don't like the Warriors...

All of this behind a missed call? You feel the need to get into a referee face behind a missed fuckin call?

:smh:

Did

you watch the vid? The ref approached him
Yes I did and honestly the ref approaching him is irrelevant in my opinion.

Livingston could have easily committed a foul on the nearest Heat player and then talked to the ref, could have talked to him at the next dead ball, next time out, etc.

To have that immediate and animated a reaction to a missed call is week asf to me.

Shaun over reacted on the no call but that Ref was out of fuckin like acting like he was trying to fight and what’s fucked up is he initiated the head butting then had the audacity to throw dude out of the game

Suspended for a week I’d be surprised if Silver ever lets him back on the court again..

Breh is it possible they tired of getting fucked up and the whistle not being consistent?

Refs shouldn’t be approaching players challenging them to fight.. Joey Crawford did that shit to tim Duncan and caught a nice 3 week ban

It was his 2nd trip where he was fouled with no call...
He did not complain.

How many techs do you think he has? This was his first ejection also.

That ref was put of line for headbutting a player, he created this altercation

Ok bruh lemme ask you this... When are the referees ever the home team? I did the job at a varsity high School level, had family that went as far as college level doing games. In that position you are ALWAYS the enemy, no matter what. So like you say the players are tired of an inconsistent whistle, you don't think a ref gets fed up with these dudes bitching and moaning behind EVERY missed call? Fans berating them? Coaches going off on them? Trust me, that shit gets old QUICK.

None of that matters. How many techs he has, how many times he's been ejected, all irrelevant. He was outta line. There's no need to get into a referee face like that behind a missed call. I've been on both sides of this scenario here. Played in high school, somewhat competitively in college, and I was a referee for a few years at a varsity high School level. I'd tell them dudes all the time, emotion is good and I'll allow it, but it won't get you a call and don't be disrespectful. If you got a beef, talk to me at the next dead ball. It's a way to handle the shit is all I'm saying.

And I agree with both of y'all the referee was completely outta line for walking up on Livingston. Maybe he felt boxed in like he couldn't go around with Livingston standing over him and the camera crews right there on the base line. Or, maybe he, as a man wasn't going to back down or be intimidated by this cat. But either way he was unprofessional as well.

To me there's wrong on both sides.

It wasn't that bad of a could for dude to be acting like that
