Samsung Leaks Reveal Zero Bezel Phone

At CES Samsung is expected to unveil both a remarkable folding ‘Galaxy X’ and an all new Galaxy S9. But new leaks also reveal Samsung is working on a far more radical Galaxy smartphone than either of them...

Popular Dutch tech site LetsGoDigital has the scoop having uncovered a brand new Samsung WIPO (World International Property Office) patent which details how the company will build a completely bezel-less phone. And this is not ‘bezel-less’ like the meaningless marketing terms being thrown around by smartphone companies today. This is zero bezels, no notch, nothing.

The patent (WO/2017/204483) shows exactly how Samsung will achieve this. The company plans to use “bent areas” on the main display so it can curve 180 degrees around the top, bottom and sides of the smartphone.

But why would Samsung extend its so-called ‘edge displays’ like this?

Firstly it simply looks stunning, as the LetsGoDigital concept illustrates above. Secondly it would bring new functionality such as side or top notifications (image being able to see your notifications from the top of your phone without even needing to take it out your pocket). And thirdly it would allow the replacement of physical power and volumes buttons with virtual ones that reduce repairs and increase water resistance.

Furthermore none of this ‘display folding’ technology is science fiction. Perhaps most notably Apple’s newly launched iPhone X actually achieves its bezel reduction via - yes - bending the edges of the glass around the display. Though in Apple’s case the display bends internally inside the phone, rather than being wrapping visibly around the edges.

Of course if Samsung is making such a radical Galaxy smartphone, it also raises questions such as to where the front facing cameras will go (presumably fitted under the display glass) and whether Samsung can finally get its in-display fingerprint sensors working.

Is there a timeframe we can apply to such technology becoming public? Right now, no. Certainly 2018 will be too soon but with no less than three Galaxy S9 models coming in the new year (despite some bad news) the already hotly anticipated Galaxy X almost ready and a complete redesign of its cheaper Galaxy smartphones imminent, it certainly seems like Samsung’s innovation teams are on a roll...

Yes it looks cool and all, but this is a drop nightmare. I'm gonna have a phone like this with no protection or case to hope and make sure it doesn't break.

Then decide to put a case on it and it hides the edge. Smh

I have the S8+ and really wish at times it just had a flat face, this whole edge nonsense is pretty useless to me.

i might be in the minority but i'm just not feeling these bezel less phones. they don't add anything i can't already do. getting a case is a win loss situation

They are running out of gimmicks. Unless holographic phones are made next, they are stuck with tweeking the form factor. Next year or so, Bezels will be back in style (once they tell us it is).

1. How would cases look good on this and you feel safe?
2. How is the front facing camera/speakers going to work?
3. Virtual buttons for power and volume are going to be annoying.

I'm not a fan of no bezels. With my lifestyle, I need to put my phone in a case anyway.

From an engineering standpoint it's nice. But practically it causes more problems. All my phones have been in cases from day one. Not issues with dropping or cracked screens.

Just increase battery life. Super thin phones are not a big point any longer.

Will they put the selfie camera, light sensor, etc in the screen? I know the article addressed it, but it'll be crazy if samsung can pull this off.

May it never fall down. On the other hand, I recant
that opinion, since the phone is sure to spur growth
in the cellphone screen repair industry; and provide
more jobs to young Vietnamese men, who otherwise
have no other skills to save their lives
wtf you talking for???....you still communicate with drums and smoke signals !!!!!:dunno:

.

when they actually come out with foldable phone then ill b impressed..

Now that's the next big thing truly, they're trying with these curved screens and what not but when they get that foldable smartphone that'll be a big thing cause it'll combat the phone size when it's in your pocket or stored somewhere

My first thought was that it looks beautiful.

My second thought was everything that you said. It DOES make it more breakable and makes a case to cover the sides all the more mandatory - which would defeat the purpose.

Exactly...they been trying to milk this other stuff for the longest...
